Absolutely terrible. No foresight by Gorton at all.

Never going to re-sign all our young players in the future. Oh and all the better when Mika is up for his contract, probably won't be able to sign him either.

But hey, we got 50 point Mr Inconsistent for 7 year who will be declining halfway through his contract.

Thoughts and prayers. Thoughts and prayers.

Problem is, don't resign him, who replaces him next season, and perhaps the one after that? It would be at least three seasons before any trade assets for Krieder become replacement value.

Still no playoffs, and then the chatter is to trade Mika for assets. Then we're in that perpetual Edmonton rebuild because of the thought that "assets" are better than actuality.

This so called "window" is opening a lot sooner than some seem to have wanted. And it's going to close a lot sooner if JG isn't smart about it.

the plan was never to trade everyone over 25 for draft picks and prospects so you can remain in a rebuild forever. at some point you need to keep guys, that doesn't mean the whole plan is out the window.
This. I think some just wanted to keep going for the lottery constantly. We are a lot closer than last year

I like Kreider as a player, and will enjoy watching him continue to play with Mika going forward.

This is going to make things difficult. This team needs to continue to get better, and I was hoping the cap space and assets we got from trading Kreider would help get us there. Hopefully JG can impress me with what's up his sleeve next, but I'm skeptical.

My initial reaction is that we just lowered the ceiling of how "good" this team can actually get, despite raising the floor, and compressed the timeline even more than it already was.

Lets just hope Chytil, Kakko, Fox, Igor, etc. can all light the world on fire while they're on team-friendly contracts.

It's an extra year, not years. You're right, maybe we could have gotten another Howden for him.

Idk... looking at other deals I’d say they’d have done a lot better than that.

Originally it was 5, then 6, and now 7. Idk how you say an extra year is no big deal when you see the impact other deals have had on the cap. Henrik, Staal, Shatty

We had the best rental on the market, and instead of trading him, we resigned him for 7 years, with trade protection clauses, and quite possibly a buyout proof contract.

What a f***ing coup!!!!!!! /s

Disagree, giving 7 years to 29 year old power forward whose game is based on speed should’ve been a non-starter period. In a hard cap league, cap flexibility is very important, this signing will be regretful in a few years, trust me.
Not sure what you are disagreeing with. Just looks like you are stating an opinion.

His game is predicated on much more than speed. That has already been debated. We can certainly debate this move on it's merits, but a compromise it is. And yes, in a cap league this means that other moves will be done. As they would need to be to accommodate this move.

There was always a path to keep him. Whether you like it or not and the ramifications that it will have it a different story.

The best rental on the market who may have been too expensive for anyone to consider it.

Awesome news! You build a team around the CORE players of YOUR organization. I was patronized when I questioned the Trouba contract with, "well that's the going rate on the market bs", well right back at ya!!!

People forget what this guy did for us in the playoffs years past, because he never became a 40g scorer. And he was supposed to elevate his game when the team was being torn down last year! Lol!

Aav is good. 2 years more term than I would have wanted but whatever. I'd be surprised if kreiders physical attributes declined significantly by the age of 36.

I'm going to put my faith in JD and JG rather than the extreme pessimism of many on this board. I'm sure they kept Zbad and everyone else in mind before making this decision. Kreids is captain material, clutch in the postseason, and we have no LW depth in our system. Much more devastated about the car accident news.

This "you'll never win a cup if you don't have a top 5 player playing at center". Or at this point it's a top 5 name, because Mike is as good as anyone on that list not named Crosby or Malkin.

I've seen it all. He absolutely is not as good as Bergeron, ROR or Toews in his prime when they won their Cups.

That's the play. Management and coaching is believing that the Rangers are far closer to competing than some on this board believe. Only time will tell. As will the other moves that this will likely set off (trading Strome, Buch, both, etc.)

Personally, I think it was a mistake, but it is what it is.

The biggest question is whether CK's limited NMC remains the same or did he get a full one.

Started to type this a minute ago -

I feel like if we had been rumored to re-sign Kreider as opposed to trading him, this deal wouldn't be looked at as unfavorably. To be clear, I don't love it. I don't hate it. I don't like it. Whether I go to full blown hatred or moving to neutral/slightly liking it will be what corresponding moves we make. If we trade ADA? It is a disaster. If we trade Strome for a haul? I might like it a bit more. If we move Skjei? I'd be neutral.

And if we do nothing more today, I will go from being one of JG's biggest defenders to one of his biggest detractors. I'm not thrilled right now but there are 2 hours and 55 minutes left to change that.

Hope this place gets their hate out of their system now because if I have to read constant lamenting about Gorton caving on one year of a contract I’m probably just gonna avoid this place.

What the f*** did you just f***ing say about me, you little bitch? I'll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I've been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I'm the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the f*** out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my f***ing words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, f***er. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You're f***ing dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that's just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little "clever" comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your f***ing tongue. But you couldn't, you didn't, and now you're paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You're f***ing dead, kiddo.

Girardi, staal and Stepan were CORE players, how did that work out
