So, I don't think Krav should have refused to go to Hartford.
But with all the mixed messages this team has sent him, with the implication he has a roster spot, with guys who played worse than him in preseason making the roster, I have no doubt he was upset and felt greatly disrespected. And frankly, ruining your relationship at the expense of a top prospect, because you don't want to waive a player like Hajek, who shouldn't be in the AHL let alone NHL, is a huge disrespect.
I don't think Krav was great in preseason, but certainly, guys like Miller and Hajek were worse, and I don't exactly think Gauthier was better. Even Laf I would say had a so-so preseason. And Trouba. But obviously, they'd never send Laf to Hartford and Trouba has a spot regardless. But there is a bit of hypocrisy and double standard in regard to Krav IMO, which again, probably upset him a great deal.
I have a feeling the only winners of this saga will be Krav and the team he ends up on. In the right spot he could get top 6 minutes early and I would not be shocked if he offensively outperformed both Laf and Kakko this season or in the future. And if either Laf or Kakko end up not reaching their potential, without Kravtsov as a 3rd piece, this team is screwed for a decade.
Not happy with Kravs refusal, but I see this mostly as an upper management problem and terrible asset management, which I think we have seen from Drury so far to a worrying degree. There's not one move Drury has made so far, in the draft or in terms of transactions, where I said "that's a great move". I like the Goodrow and Reeves acquisitions, but I would say they are just good and not great moves. And this fear of Tom Wilson and obsession with gritty depth players at the expense of talent is going to hurt the team in the long run. Yea, we needed some more physicality, but that seriously seems like the only thing they are interested in right now.
