The suffering has just begun with Korpi. He has not changed one bit, from his AHL days.

- Brilliant goalie for shorts stints, but always crashes and burns when it comes to consistency.
- A series of amazing saves, then a quick succession of backbreaking goals. Never started more than 40 games in a season.

It was incomprehensible from day 1 that Dorion went out and signed him for HALF A DECADE and even more incomprehensible that experts and fans alike were/are partial to the signing. First thing I did the day the contract was announced was look at the buyout cost.

Oh lawdy, here we go

Many people are to blame before Korpi for this outcome

This tread has nothing to do with today's game. Here's what I wrote the day the deal was signed:

"It should not be anyone's first reaction to check the buyout options when the team GM signs a player he coveted, vetted and targeted. Yet, here we are.

Brutal deal, but par the course with Dorion. Korpisalo has yet to start 40 NHL games in a season. He has the size on paper and is agile in net, but looks small on the ice. 10 amazing saves in a row followed by a scratch your head "how did that happen" goal allowed type of goalie. Somehow, that warrants a 5 years term and makes him the perfect FYOUS cup contending window goalie.

The crazies have been running the asylum since the Zibanejad trade, but somehow, this GM would have you believe that it's all part of "the plan" and some people will swallow spoonfuls of the BS."

By contrast, here's what I thoughts of the Tarasenko signing a few days later:

"Nooooo fffff-ingg wayy!

Congratulations to that random twitter guy who called it. This makes up for a lot. A lot.

Tarasenko + Kubalik + likely lower 1st >>> Debrincat. The team suddenly looks big, balanced and deadly. Very exciting. Good job Pierre!

Tarasenko - Stützle - Giroux
Tkachuk - Norris - Batherson
Kubalik - Pinto - Sokolov
Joseph - Kastelic - MacEwan
Kelly/Greig

Chabot - Zub
Chuchrun - Brännström
Sanderson - Hamonic
Kleven/JBD

Forsberg
Korpisalo"

Just don't understand how a team with a supposed "pro scouting" department gets 3/4 of its signings wrong year after year, when "home scouts" like me that simply enjoy watching hockey at any level know those contracts are bad the day they're signed.

How about we take a look at more than the goalie in these situations. Still seeing a lot of blown coverage, and chasing the puck in the defensive zone. I still see some of the same issues that have plaguing us for the last 5 years. So frustrating to watch now that we outshoot our opponents but then give up on the defensive end. What is up with just not coming out of the dressing room for the 2nd periods, jesus murphy.

You make some good points and had the same thoughts when the deals were made but I’m willing to give korpi more time with crossed fingers he settles in.

Imagine being this upset after 5 season games
The Matt Murray contract and the Gustavsson for Talbot swap exist. Dorion's terrible decisions when it comes to evaluating goaltending isn't new and so far Karpisalo's signing is in line with the previous ones.

Are you blaming this loss on Korpi? Lmao
I think a lot of us had the opinion this was a bad deal from the beginning and it was more on Korpisalo to prove us wrong, which to date he has not. In hindsight, would have been nice to put that money towards Pinto and gotten a 1B/2A goalie of possibly equal talent at a fraction of the price.

Korpi was the highest upside goalie on the market by a fair margin. Let’s wait till the new year at least before taking out the pitchforks

Yup there are lots of those type of goalies around. Probably should have gotten two just in case one got injured!

He was terrible today. But he was good in the previous game. Our team D was also terrible today, as was our entire teams play. We are down by goals and Detroit was still out skating us. Literally no sense of urgency and handling the puck like it's a grenade from many players tonight.

We didn’t need upside, we needed results Korpisalo isn’t a starter never has been if we are being honest.

Varlamov was the obvious choice had better year is the better overall goalie as well and would’ve cost way less even if you had to overpay to get him away from the NYI.

If this is tbe Korpisalo we’re getting, tell me how it’s a good signing, especially with how our cap situation turned out.

There was nothing wrong with his play tonight nor against Tampa... The team was a reckless defensively tonight and gave up a shitload of PPs against, so far, one of the best PPs in the league

Oh you're right. DJ Smith is not anymore of an NHL head coach than Pierre Dorion is an NHL GM. There has been no consistency on the ice for 7 years and counting because there is no accountability at any level of the organization.

Who wouldn't love a bench boss whose "system" is to let you be you? Or a GM whose shots in the dark and egregious mistakes are always excused by the fact that he's working under the constraints of a budget?

1) This is the second year in a row where there is enough talent in lineup for the team to perform better than it is, without solely relying on individual players efforts and talents.
2) The coach has failed to implement a cohesive system players can rely on and fall back on, on nights when their individual talents don't carry them.
3) Joonas Korpisalo is a sub-par goaltender with a bad contract. Add that to the Murrays, Dadonov, Condons, Del Zottos, etc.; OR to the fact that Zibanejad is playing in NY, Stone in Vegas, Byram in Colorado, Gustavsson in Minny, Korchinski in Chicago without the Sens having a single long term piece to show for it; OR to the fact that the first time the GM didn't have the safety blanket of the "budget" excuse, he failed to ice a complete roster, etc.

None of those things are mutually exclusive and can all be true at the same time.
