Is it too much to ask for Korpisalo to not be injured and not suck?

That’s all I ask

Mike Johnson liked it too. They're very different (him and Dave) with Mike being heavy into analytics but came to the same conclusion. The structure of the contract is key.

Either way every couple of years he seems to give stellar goaltending. I'll take the chance of that happening over what are other options were.

To me the deal is done.

Like it, don't like it doesn't change anything. His performance is going to talk the loudest. Sens need him to be good not great and consistent. Know what they are getting on his starts. I am hoping Forsberg is fully recovered and we have a good tandem.

I dunno, if a guy like Tarasenko is considering Ottawa, guys like Korpisalo chose Ottawa, I doubt every forward on Seattle with even a modified NTC blocks a trade.

For all the holes in our bottom 6, our team is poised to break out.
Last year was our breakout and we couldn’t even finish 8th

Context, though. Think of it this way for next year:

Norris replaces Debrincat in the top 6
Chychrun replaces Zaitsev in the top 4
Korpisalo replaces Talbot in goal

Then, you bank on Stützle, Tkachuk and Sanderson taking yet another step.

Can we go from 86 to 94 points, just with those improvements? Not counting additional contributions from Pinto, Greig or whoever we get back in the DBC trade?

It's no sure thing, and the East will be a bloodbath. But we're not in bad shape.

I've come around to thinking that DBC wanting out is saving Dorion from himself. We'll be better off in the long-term without him making $8M+.

Korpisalo passes the eye test.

Reminds me of Bobrovsky before breaking out.

He was only one I noted who was stopping McDavid with consistency. He has this ability where he does not fold when someone is coming in at him who typically is known to score. Like a Crosby or a McDavid or Drai. He gives you a chance to have that significant save.

Term is too much. Like someone pointed, cup winner Hill got 2 years. Should have been 3.

But if he breaks out the term is awesome….

The East was extremely tightly packed and deep last season. With the insane amount of injuries we had, it's true, the Sens finished 6pts outside of 8th. That same 8th place team also happened to steamroll their way into the SCF - making it a total of 4 legit cup contenders in the Atlantic division last season.

The playoffs were a nice goal to strive for. But last year was clearly not our year for many reasons. And all things considered, they made legit strides forward as team on the whole.

I'm praying to Alfie and the rest of the hockey gods that we get one last bone tossed our way in the form of a legit #1A starter in Korpisalo. Feels like its been way too long since we had a guy that we have full confidence in back there.

And I dont really care about his past stats tbh. Lots of goalies peak early and then fizzle out long before they hit 30yrs old. But it's just as common to see a goalie finally breakout in his later 20s. And has their prime years somewhere in the 28-34 range.

At $4m per he's on a great deal for us to run a tandem with him and Forsberg. And at least imo, they could actually be a very good duo if healthy.

Watching Boston I legit feel like we'd have defeated them even without Norris Chabot and cychrun. As long as Jimothy went supernova.

Injuries killed us last year. The moment Norris went down, we were done.

When he got injured, what we had for top two C experience was
Stuetzle with roughly 40 games
Pinto with roughly 20 games

And that just won't work in the NHL

Worst case scenario this year, Norris blows his shoulder in training camp, what do we have?
Stuetzle with roughly 120 games
Pinto with roughly 100 games

That's not ideal either, but it's far more manageable than last year. We are in a far better place going in to this season to withstand a significant injury in our top 3Cs.

Too much term for a gamble, especially at the goalie position where you can find plenty of cheap workable options. Long term deals should be reserved for top tier goalies like in Tampa and NY.
Well sure. In a perfect world. But the alternative in the real world wasn’t a better goalie that was cheaper that didnt require giving up critical assets for. We need a goalie to establish a good start this year. And before we knew the contract, he seemed to be the consensus opinion. I don’t think passing on that because he fails the ivory tower cost per point accountant perfection index makes one a better GM. I think it makes them one afraid to take risks. If it doesn’t work out, you can come back and say I told you so. But of course, we don’t know. The squeamishness for risk index is a lot lower in some than others.

We did not have many better options than Korpisalo.

I am also hoping that the coaching staff improves our team's play in our D zone, particularly the Fs who collapse too far towards the goal/slot and do not provide sufficient aggressive fast pressure on the Ds at the points. That should help reduce Shots and Goals against, and improve puck retrieval in our own D zone.

That contract is not helping in rounding out the top-9 right now

I mean, Korpisalo "could" pay off if his past suckage was 100% hip related but damn what a risky move for a team that is trying to get out of a long rebuild.

It's a Matt Murray 2.0 type move, gambling on him to finally be able to stay healthy

But unlike Murray he has already returned from injury and had a prerty darn good
season last year.

Yeah so I'm going to be hopeful as his hip surgery was a lot more recent than I thought... He actually played only 1 season since and did well. It's true that for a goalie, sometimes that's all it takes

If healthy, our duo could actually be quite good. It's the team defense in front of them that worries me (which includes coaching)
