Like who? And what would you be willing to give up in terms of assets instead of straight cash?

And what if your preferred candidate isn’t available, or doesn’t want to extend here, then what?

I think they considered the trade market just as much as the UFA market, probably more, and yet here we are.

We can’t simply fall back on the idea that we could have traded for better, especially since we haven’t seen him play here yet.

Ottawa tax has been paid, let’s see what we have.
Nobody really knows exactly what the market and the alternatives were. Regardless of anybody's position, it's all based on assumptions. Lots of good discussion on this even on this page.

I think he will our D is much improve, and we just need consistent goaltending especially in the 1st period so that we can score the first goal of the game which is so important, Korpi and Forsberg shoul gave us the goaltending necessary to make the playoffs.
As the day is moving along, the sting is wearing off a bit. We have Forsberg ready and is apparently healthy, so he could end up number 1 anyways.

Not in a million years would I have thought this was the contract it was gonna take and it was a pretty big shock to wake up to. I thought more like 2 years, 3 max.

Still not the bet I would have made, personally speaking, but it is what it is and we'll see how he performs. He's a guy I expect NHL performance from, I'm just not sure he's the guy I would sign to a contract that makes him our #1 during our contending window. I'll have to see him do a lot to convince me he can be that guy.

I can at least celebrate the work my Lakers did in the last 24 hours. Incredible.

I'm excited to see how Korpi and Forsberg work as a tandem. Don't love the term, but 4m aav is not bad. Welcome Joonis!

Agreed. 5 years seems a bit long but goalies sometimes surprise us. That said I wouldn't be surprised if a buyout becomes needed by year 3.

I think what this contract shows us is how desirable Ottawa is as a free agent destination. It's like we are paying a premium to bring players here.

You're spot on, that's the new generation today they think they know more about managing an nhl team then the actual gm who has many many years of experience in his field. It's so much more easier being a GM in NHL 23 then it is in real life.
So, ostensibly you have to accept the idea that no GMs ever make mistakes then as well I guess?

This experiment was always interesting.

Don't like what I heard about adding to our forward depth. Didn't shut it down, but it sounds like Dorion likes where we're at and argued we're fine for forward depth.
Nothing really changed from when he said they needed an upgrade. Right back to hoping it works out vs being confident it will work because the player has shown the capability. Bottom 6 absolutely still needs work.

Greig, Sokolov, Kelly, Joseph as Possible wingers is simply not good enough ... I expect Greig to get better .. but he's pretty slight and he needs reps.

To be fair what exactly has Dorion accomplished? I feel like many people here are way smarter with regards to hockey player knowledge lol

No GM bats 1.000, they all make mistakes but I will trust the hockey people in place who have a lot more experience and knowledge then a bunch of would be GM's who makes trades and signed players on a message board, it's always easier to make trades and signed players when you're by yourself.

My concern was with how much he pushed back on the narrative. He really took it and ran with the narrative of giving guys a chance.
Ooooooooooof.

Wtf we have literally zero depth at forward as is!
I see little argument to the contrary. It needs some punch even if it's just one quality guy brought in.

We're once again relying on full health required in order to do well if we do nothing imo.

Exactly and at some point you have to pull the trigger somewhere. Dorion made it pretty clear that there were net minders they liked (at least one) that could have potentially been explored via trade, but that Ottawa was on NTC lists.

Korpi was their top UFA choice based in the recommendations of both goalie coaches, the AGM, the pro scouts, Forsberg who has a history with him, and his own personal viewings in the playoffs last season.

He may not have been their first choice all things being equal on the trade front, but it does look like it was a well consulted move across the organization. That sounds promising at least.

In the end we only have the facts surrounding the move we did make, and very little on the moves we didn’t. We’ll never know if there was someone better we could have had unfortunately. We do no that Ottawa is not a desirable destination in general sadly, so even getting a guy like Korpi as a UFA is kind of a win in my books.

I like that his success last year seems like it could be his new lease on life after fixing his hips. Lots of potential for this to be the healthy guy going forward. We’ll have to wait and see.

Can only hope when Andlauer takes over officially that he cleans house and brings in winners.

I look at the roster and see some great players signed to awesome contracts like #7 and #18 and see a stud in the making like Sanderson but the teams depth is absolutely trash you can’t go into next season with all prospects and/or with AHL fodder taking up most of the bottom 6 spots and 3rd D pairing, which from the sounds of it sounds very likely.

It’s really embarrassing how poorly constructed this team has become the core deserves so much better!

We have some of the greatest young players in the NHL and the best roster this management team can construct is a boarder line playoff team …

Dorion could legit sign a jock full of poo and some in here would still drink his kool aid its kinda impressive at times

That being said Korpisalo did rank in the top Gs at 5v5 sv% last year and in high danger. We’ll see, I hope he succeeds, but 5 years is long and the team could end up regretting the term.

All of this doesnt matter if the team doesnt improve defensively and on details, way too much running around and stupid play all around. Its impressive how disorganized the team was defensively last year again.

One thing I don’t understand is Dorion says he adressed the biggest need but Id hope he and his pro staff see that their depth is seriously bad. Bottom 6 needs major improvement and I hope he is aware of that.

I knew Korpisalo looked familiar:

Alasdair Beckett-King! Love his Loremen podcast!

Anyway, I'm back home so now I can share my very important and very unique opinion on this signing: Too much term.

We're going to find out who the real Korpisalo is. Hopefully he's a true starter. If he's not, this deal is barf.

Nobody mentioning how Jarry got alot more than Korpisalo, gor the same term?

Jarry was worse than Korpisalo last year and has fewer NHL career games played.

Major Dubas L.

Very happy we don't have him here, because that deal has too much term and needs a lower cap hit
