If adding term was necessary to attract Korpisalo, how do we know, or how does anyone really know that by offering additional term to another alternative would not have worked? Then tell us who you would have signed because doing nothing is not the answer?
Yeah Korpi will be just fine. He will be our Craig Anderson 2.0, Anderson was 29 when we acquired him from Colorado and I see a lot of similarities between Andy and Korpi.Look... I'll eat crow if Koripsalo sucks, but unless he is injured I just cannot see it. He played on Columbus last year and they were a defensive mess, yet he was solid. He also looked rock solid in the playoffs for the kings. I was honestly cursing him during the Oilers series. I think he is a goalie that has finally found his stride. Kind of like Ben Bishop, who we signed in his late twenties.
Interesting thoughts. If adding term was necessary to attract Korpisalo, how do we know, or how does anyone really know that by offering additional term to another alternative would not have worked?
One thing I've always wondered about is the idea that there weren't other choices and that somehow we can know and have reliable information about what every player that is an alternative would do, or would not do? It seems we are basing this mostly on history versus anything more precise as far as what all the alternatives would do. So if "no players would sign" or "no players were available" is reasonable based on an assumption, then it seems like some player would sign or some players were available if the right contract was waived in front of him is also a valid assumption. How do we know that Dorion even approached all of the alternatives?
It's kind of hard to know with certainty. Kind of a funny analogy, but the world was also thought to be flat until it wasn't. It's a devil's advocate thing I suppose, but still worth considering I'd think.
He had a good season for.....the LA Kings? The team that has played defence first hockey for over a decade?

He’s a good goalie and a much better improvement for the Sens going with Talbot. The term is 1 or 2 years longer as goalies go as goalies go but an improvement. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Gustavsson take a big step back this year.
Or just trust the experts who have been in the business for decades, but regardless it's like baseball the chances of getting hits & home runs is based on very low percentages relative to the amount at bats. All GMs get some hits, some home runs, occassionally luck out on a late pick & most certainly stike out more often than not. And when they do we replace them & go through the whole thing again. If adding term was necessary to attract Korpisalo, how do we know, or how does anyone really know that by offering additional term to another alternative would not have worked?

Last season Korpi had a GSAx of 12.7 which was 11th vs all situations
and 18.0 vs 5 on 5 which was 9th!! That's pretty damn good if you ask me
Ya you can't dispute he put up good numbers last year, but we're buying high hoping he can sustain career high numbers. We’re paying for one season just like the Oilers did with Campbell.
You're spot on, that's the new generation today they think they know more about managing an nhl team then the actual gm who has many many years of experience in his field. It's so much more easier being a GM in NHL 23 then it is in real life.Or just trust the experts who have been in the business for decades, but regardless it's like baseball the chances of getting hits & home runs is based on very low percentages relative to the amount at bats. We have had plenty of GMs, scouts & coaches over the past 30 yrs & not once has everyone been on board with who they were with maybe the exception the yr we went to the cup final. Of course, once we lost those finals we went back to crapping on them again. But you're right we just never get all of the information to make any reasonable assumption as to what exactly happened & why & unless it comes out later we may never know. It would be great if it was all transparent, but I doubt any team would want that & prefer their info/strategy stays well guarded. It's all Monday morning quarterbacking at best.
Like who? And what would you be willing to give up in terms of assets instead of straight cash?I would have probably went down the trade route and def not commited to term which most other goalies aren't getting in the market rn
again 'give him a chance' is not the same as a 5 year deal
my god if you are looking at it from the angle that this could get Dorion fired than the bar is so low around here
Brian Burke was saying some of the same things I did about Korpisalo's contract being too long & too expensive if he was a backup or a 1b versus a starter. So, I think I was doing that and would agree with getting some info from someone with experience in the industry.Or just trust the experts who have been in the business for decades, but regardless it's like baseball the chances of getting hits & home runs is based on very low percentages relative to the amount at bats. I think he will our D is much improve, and we just need consistent goaltending especially in the 1st period so that we can score the first goal of the game which is so important, Korpi and Forsberg shoul gave us the goaltending necessary to make the playoffs.Ya you can't dispute he put up good numbers last year, but we're buying high hoping he can sustain career high numbers.
I like Korpisalo, was hoping we'd land him but this is another gamble on a goalie with a small sample size. Yes Korpisalo was a good goalie for the BJs who had some meh bluelines, but given the other signings that have just gone down today for goalies, we shouldn't be paying this much.
The cap hit is fine, term is not, and the term is probably what needed to be there for Korpisalo to sign here. However, this guy isn't Hellebyuck, Sorokin or Shesterkin, he's not the game breaker that you commit extra term to.
At that point, I'd have been fine if Dorion got the following:
Lyon for 2 years at $1 million aav
Broissoit at 1 year $1.175 million
Andersen at 2 years $3.4 million
Blackwood at 2 years $2.3million
Raanta at 1 year $1.5 million
I think this is a better gamble than Murray, but at the same time, doesn't seem like Dorion learned from his mistake with Murray.
On the bright side, for the first time in a while, we have a competent blueline. We're at least putting Korpisalo in a position to succeed, so the gamble's harms are mitigated a bit.
