I'm sure part of the hold up is the fact the Loonie is now trading at .69. It had hit it for a short time but is now there and actually at .6883 at closing.

Wow, I am beginning to see Dean's devious scheme now.

Step 1: Make Kopitar think it's a tough negotiation.

Step 2: Give him everything he wants to make him happy.

Step 3: Win a third Stanley Cup using happy Kopitar.

Step 4: Lubo Kopitar's ass the week after the cup parade.

Step 5: Start rebuild with newly acquired assets.

What a cunning SOB.

Obviously a highly unlikely situation, but after doing it to visnovsky it shows DL can be ruthless. These agents have to protect the interest of their players, so I would imagine it has been discussed.

Kopitar is not getting traded this season after signing this extension. That is an absolutely ridiculous take. Some of you guys really need to read your posts before you click that Submit button. Holy cow.

Kopi + Brown for Kessel IMO

To be fair, practice was one hour later than anticipated (11, not 10), and it was assumed that it would be done after practice.

Practice ended somewhere around 1:00, based on the Rosen tweets.

Probably a silly question, but don't these contracts with NMC sometimes have a timeframe before the NMC kicks in. Perhaps Kopitar is a little concerned that DL may do a Visnovsky on him.

I doubt that's the holdup, shouldn't be an issue.

As of the 2013 CBA, when players are signed to a contract extension that includes an NMC or NTC, it can be included in the contract/clause that the NMC goes into effect immediately--or at some other date before the actual contract extension starts. The only limitation is that the player would have been eligible to receive a NMC/NTC on July 1st of that current season the clause is being retroactively applied to.

The criteria for that is if not already under contract the player would have otherwise been classified as a Group 3 free agent on July 1st of the current season. Meaning age 27 on July 1st or have 7 accrued NHL seasons. Both of which thresholds Kopitar would have met on July 1st 2015. So Kopitar and the Kings could sign an extension today and have an NMC become effectively immediately.

Kopitar to Toronto for 1st pick overall in off season. (E5)

Ron, you need to take a chill pill. No one was seriously suggesting that Kopitar will be traded in the off season, but it would be a giant middle finger from Lombardi to Brisson and Kopitar. It will never happen though.

Hyori suggested that.

mouser, what's your opinion, why does it take so long?

It's not really taking that long. We know contracts are being negotiated but we usually don't know how close or that they are maybe imminent. This is a rare case where we know it's really close. And in the day of instant gratification it seems to be taking a long time.
But this is a big deal for both the player and the team.

Someone would cry cap circumvention, of course.

Also reminds me of this that from the other day

What I think is funny is 3/4 of the Kopitar contract news stories are "What does this mean for Stamkos?" It is like the only thing important about Kopitar's deal is how does relate to some guy they actually care about
