What I think is funny is 3/4 of the Kopitar contract news stories are "What does this mean for Stamkos?" It is like the only thing important about Kopitar's deal is how does relate to some guy they actually care about

true, close to 75% in my feed is "What does this mean for Stamkos?" east vs west

If Yzerman is smart, it means he will trade Stamkos, Stamkos will sign for some ridiculous amount in Toronto, and the Leafs will continue to lose.

estimates for stamkos now are 10-12M. i don't know if hometown discount is included.

Again, I will say it. NO PLAYER in the NHL is worth a $10M AAV given the current economic realities that will impact the salary cap for next year and perhaps many years. The cap will certainly not get to $80M as quickly as most people expected.

Signing Stamkos, who is a great goal scorer, but whose game is limited in many other ways, for an AAV of $10M+ is ludicrous asset management. Tampa has a number of young players that will require raises very soon.

This isn't the NBA where you pay three guys HUGE money and the rest are scrubs, and you can still win a title. In the NHL every player plays, and every player has to be competent in their role if the team is going to win. You don't get competent players on minimum salary contracts.

As an example, I challenge people to name a player of Lewis' caliber that can be had for his current cap hit, and Lewis does not make the minimum. Same could be said of Clifford and other players that have been on the roster over the last 3 years.

If DD was in AK's position, and demanding $10M/year, you wouldn't give it to him?

In three years, we'll see. Right now, he is probably the only player on the Kings worthy of consideration for a $10M AAV. Now that Kopitar has it, of course Doughty will get it, and even more.

Doughty should be the highest paid player on the Kings.

mouser, what's your opinion, why does it take so long?

No opinion. Obviously they're still haggling over some details that must be relatively minor in comparison to the reported years and total $. Could be if NMC every year of deal, could be specific salaries each season, could be if some of the salary is in the form of signing bonuses.

I think a good guess is how much is signing bonuses vs regular salary. But again, that's purely a guess.

I agree he is the most valuable player on the Kings. And I'm sure he will want more when it comes time, just like he beat Kopitar's $6.8M last time.

Obviously your position is clear on Kopitar's contract. I just don't see a better option. If the choices are overpay @ $10M/year, trade him now, or let him walk for nothing after the season, there is trouble behind every door. It's a bummer Kopitar isn't willing to take less but there really is no other choice than to give in.

I doubt that's the holdup, shouldn't be an issue.

As of the 2013 CBA, when players are signed to a contract extension that includes an NMC or NTC, it can be included in the contract/clause that the NMC goes into effect immediately--or at some other date before the actual contract extension starts. The only limitation is that the player would have been eligible to receive a NMC/NTC on July 1st of that current season the clause is being retroactively applied to.

The criteria for that is if not already under contract the player would have otherwise been classified as a Group 3 free agent on July 1st of the current season. Meaning age 27 on July 1st or have 7 accrued NHL seasons. Both of which thresholds Kopitar would have met on July 1st 2015. So Kopitar and the Kings could sign an extension today and have an NMC become effectively immediately.

Thanks for clarifying

Re: Kopitar. From my understanding, he, Kings are still inching closer. As of now, not expecting the team to announce anything this evening.

Until it's announced, everyone should shut up. Enough teasers, enough "inching closer," and enough " expected today." Just shut up until you are ready to announce it.

It's a game of inches.

Unfortunately, Dean is going to let Brisson bounce outside.

@lakingsinsider: I really don't know s*** about what is going on with the Kopitar contract.

“@lakingsinsider: No reason to get concerned over anything Kopitar-wise, fwiw. Still expecting agreement to happen soon, from all indications.”

Post the tweet itself, not just the text. I tend to scan postings and if I don't see the famous Twitter box I'm gonna post it.

It's pretty easy to do. Just enclose tweet tags around the number portion of the tweet.

Example (take away the quotes): ["tweet"]44444444444444444["/tweet"]

They're translating the contract in Slovenian, and Kopitar is making sure none of Lombardi's fingers OR TOES are crossed.
