It's funny you continue to make fun of me about Mike Richards when it was one thing that I was completely correct about.

I don't think there is any chance Kopitar's game ever falls to the levels that Richards reached his last two seasons here, mainly because Kopitar is a pro who takes his job seriously, but if it does collapse you can guarantee there will be homers making excuses or calling out people for having a (correct) opinion.

Yeah, I find that a bit odd.

...must have been one of the delusional guys who blame/d Sutter for Richards decline.
That one was a classic thread tho.

I agree with you however that Kopitars game shouldn't decline in the Richards mold. He does play a smart game and has no concussion history (that we know of)...

My reasons for poking fun (emphasis on fun) is not that you weren't right but that you brought it up (and continue to bring it up) so often that, at least in my head, you became "Herby - the Mike Richards guy".

Kings17, on the other hand, seems to be morphing from "Dean Lombardi fanboy guy" to "Kopi contract guy" :D

That's very illegal
Salary can't vary by more than 35% in any single year and can't vary by more than 50% of the highest year.

So that means if (for the sake of argument) it had some years at $15M, it could go down as low as $9.75M in the subsequent year, and no lower than $7.5M in any year.

I messed with the numbers, and it's hard to see their being any years much above the $13.8M Kane & Toews got.

Yep. And even going as high as that 13.8M would mean him actually getting a raise of 6.1M in that first year. So it wouldn't shock me to see something in the 11-12M range for year one. Which would mean it could drop to the 5.5-6M range in the end.

Also something that was correct back when almost everyone wanted to hang him.

I think it was mentioned when talking about Lecavalier that the team had charitable commitments today so it doesn't surprise me that it's tomorrow.

I see Kopi as the type of guy who will play into his late 30's, he has for the most part been very healthy and doesn't play an overly physical style. And he seems to take good care of himself.

Obviously he won't be a Top 15 player for the life of the contract, but I think he'll be pretty good for most of it, similar to a Mats Sundin.

Before I even reached your second paragraph I was thinking "like Sundin."

Kopitar and his contract are the least of our problems, IMO.

might have to buy another Kopitar jersey. I bought my first Kopi jersey the game after he signed his 7 year contract in 2008 and its been somewhat of a good luck charm so far

it's a bit more complicated and "creative".

here's an insight.

NHL’s bottom line, expansion plans at risk with Canadian currency struggles
Washington Post, by Will Hobson September 7, 2015

In an email, Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly, wrote, “While it clearly is a hardship for the Canadian clubs, it is less so than in previous years because (1) clubs are better prepared to deal with it (most have hedged revenue streams), (2) the system is different and to a certain extent ‘self-adjusts’ to account for different values in currency.â€

Daly declined to answer follow-up questions about how the league “self-adjusts.â€

rules are flexible, in a ****-might-happen sense. lower salary cap is bad for nhl and loonie alone shouldn't shake it.

just a pragmatic view.

Daly is saying the current system "self-adjusts" in contrast to the old pre-cap/escrow systems. I.e. The framework that was in place when teams like Quebec and Winnipeg had to depart for economic reasons.

The major changes since then:
- The cap and player salaries are tied to league-wide hockey revenue. That hockey revenue calculation includes currency exchange rates for revenues generated in CAD. So lower exchange rate means lower salaries and cap.
- The revenue sharing program is available for Canadian teams if they meet the thresholds. Entirely possible that teams like Winnipeg and Ottawa will receive revenue sharing dollars this season or next.

some dumbass joker on twitter. i'm taking it back, sorry.

No problem. I'm sure we'll see it in a couple of hours anyway.

We all know the term and amount, obviously. I'm very interested to see the particulars of the NMC myself, but I doubt they will announce that today, given the Kings' attitude about contract particulars in the past.

It will eventually leak out, however.

thx. "self-adjust" might be a tricky word for interpretation in such circumstances or context, glad you've explained it. gl.
