ouch, come on Kopi 9 is enough to live, lets win more cups! You'd pay a couple million for cups right?

If DL can bring the cap hit down with a full NMC, Kopi is one of the players you can do it for.

that was a part of the deal going back to brown's previous contract. some sort of compensation, and it was agreed beforehand , there's a red thread between the dots. but kopi wasn't in the same situation as brown. kopi wanted "no leave" and that's where the problem was. as we see kopi got his "no leave", that's why only 10. kopi = king forever, but i'm not sure about brown.

You're joking, right?

10M = hometown discount included. you'll get it one day.

There is no hometown discount in the Kopitar deal. Everyone knows Dean overpaid, it's just a question of whether or not they think it was worth it.

Only Kings fans that are fans of the Kings because it's the team Kopitar plays for believe otherwise.

I agree it's not a discount, but I guarantee you he'd get more than 80M on the open market.

I could see myself in that category of fans, at least 5,6 od years ago, and I can agree 10M makes him a tad overpayed. $9,5M would be fair price, but 0,5M doesn't make it some kind of huge or bad overpayment.

gee, have a beer. i know it's early but at least it will put some colors in that world. kopi will sign today, very likely, and with that lak will be contender for many more years, what else do you want? extra 10M in cap space to play with your numbers? cheerz, i'll have a beer.

That's basically what I expected him to get and I'm perfectly okay with it. If you want to keep players of Kopitar's skill level, you need to sign them to these contracts, and Kopitar is a player the Kings can't afford to lose.

As I have said before, bring on the amnesty buyouts when the next lockout comes in a few years. The Kings will need them.

Teams that hand out those kind of deals never win. Now we're getting really ridiculous. An AAV of > $12M.

The money is far more guaranteed than a Cup, so a player in Kopitar's position, one of being wanted by more than one team, they'll always get and take the money. Plus Kopitar already has 2 Cups, so he's not chasing anything.

Kopitar doesn't owe it to the Kings to take less. He doesn't owe it to fans. He doesn't owe it to his teammates. Technically he doesn't even owe it to himself or his family to get as much money as possible, but if he's going to owe anything to anyone, it's himself and his family.

This is why players wanted free agency. If you do/can hit the open market, and you have options, the world is yours.

That doesn't really mean that a team wouldn't do it. I don't doubt for one second that TML or some other desperate team would throw him every penny they can. I guess we'll probably find out with Stamkos. It's very rare that players like this hit the open market especially these days. Even with the possibility of the cap going down, teams would line up at a chance to sign either player.

I agree with whoever else said paying $10M to Kopitar isn't the problem. The Kings can easily afford $10M to Kopitar if Dustin Brown wasn't making more than Jeff Carter. That is the issue. I think it's foolish to walk away from a player that is a key piece in winning into the future because there is another player on the team who is overpaid. If Dustin Brown is the problem, then they'll have to deal with him accordingly. Walking away from Kopitar over a million or two is cutting off your nose to spite your face. I'm still holding out hope he has a career year this year. He' s looked like beast the past few months.

No one said it was a good idea, but for sure teams would give Kopitar more than 80M on the open market.

Bottom line is that Kopitar is getting a 3.2M cap raise to stay with in L.A. for 8 more years. Assuming one of our key players doesn't have a sudden drop off in play, the Kings should be a contender for 2 or 3 more seasons.

It's worth it.

You need to slow your roll man, you've got 8 years to be mad about this contract. Pace yourself. :D

It's going to be one hell of a ride!!

I can't believe Kopi hit $10!!! I thought for sure Lombardi would dig his heals in for the moral victory just under.

Have learned from a hockey ops executive that Kopitar will sign his contract tomorrow. Not expecting an announcement this morning.

Like I said, bring on the next lockout and round of amnesty buyouts. We have this season and maybe next to enjoy contention if something doesn't happen to dramatically increase the salary cap.

If the CDN doesn't recover, I can see the NHL opting out of the CBA in 2019.

Not really anything to do with Kopi's contract, but more working on a solution to make the cap more predictable going forward. I think the current system is really, really good, but it's reliance on a national currency is its glaring weakness. The escalator was a good idea, but i'd like to see it more of an automatic thing if revenues don't go up by a certain amount strictly because of exchange rate.

I actually don't think it will be a huge money fight like the last one, the cap is in a good spot and well-run teams are profitable with only a few exceptions. I think it will be more about contract lengths, guaranteed contracts, and cap predictability.

The certainty of labor strife right when the Kings' window is closing is perfect. It's playing a big part in DL's contract strategy.

I'm curious what you think the Kings should do. They are currently in first for their division and look to be a real threat come playoff time. Would you let Kopitar walk at the end of the year? Would you trade him now to try and get something for him? What is your bottom dollar and term for him? Who would you replace him with?
