I think Stamkos is a better player than Kane. By quite a far margin.
Why do I get the feeling it's actually going to be 10 years @ 8 per?
Everyone talks about the cap increasing like it'll only go up for the Kings. Our competitors will also have the benefit of their star players talking up a smaller percentage of their cap along with being able to add extra pieces. It's a wash.
I get nervous any time Patrick Kane is on the ice. Stamkos isn't as dangerous as Kane. Stamkos relies on his shot, whereas Kane is so deceptive and lethal due to his playmaking, skating, stick handling, shooting... he is someone you can't give any time and space inside your own blueline.
That's a two way street. We've had Carter on a sweetheart, cap circumventing contract ever since we got him.
I completely understand and agree with the notion that 10 million a season is absurd money, and Kopitar needs to earn it. My only response here is what else was Dean gonna do? You can't let a player like Kopitar just walk away in the middle of your Cup window. As soon as Toews signed his deal, it was obvious Kopitar's would be in the same ballpark. These guys have had almost identical careers. Kopitar could have very easily won both Conn Smythes, same with Doughty.
I get just as frustrated when he goes into low power mode, but let's look at the bigger picture here. He's been a consistent 70 point Selke forward for years now. Go back and watch the Sharks and Ducks series from 2014. That's Kopitar leading the way.
And to be honest, wringing our hands about the Kopitar money is just a distraction from the real hand wringing that is Dustin Brown.

I think Lucic will be resigned around 6.5 million and i honestly believe Brown will be moved at the draft .
No, of course it will go down if HRR taken in by Candian teams and converted to U.S. dollars gets reduced due to the exchange rate. Remember what I posted about escrow going up from 16% to 20%? That tells you everything you need to know about what the NHL really thinks about HRR for this season.
Teams don't hedge to protect HRR, they hedge to protect themselves so they can pay the players in U.S. dollars as they are contractually required.

stamkos wasn't that bad in last playoffs. imo he's lacking something to become really great but i'm not sure what it is.
it's a bit more complicated and "creative".
here's an insight.
NHL’s bottom line, expansion plans at risk with Canadian currency struggles
Washington Post, by Will Hobson September 7, 2015
In an email, Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly, wrote, “While it clearly is a hardship for the Canadian clubs, it is less so than in previous years because (1) clubs are better prepared to deal with it (most have hedged revenue streams), (2) the system is different and to a certain extent ‘self-adjusts’ to account for different values in currency.â€
Daly declined to answer follow-up questions about how the league “self-adjusts.â€
rules are flexible, in a ****-might-happen sense. lower salary cap is bad for nhl and loonie alone shouldn't shake it.
just a pragmatic view.
...and yet no one can cite these "rules", and Daly declined to answer how it "self-adjusts". If HRR declines the cap will follow. Without the players using the escalator clause the cap would have remained the same this season.
Dustin Brown was the last NHL player I can remember that took a true home town discount, on his middle contract.
I wouldn't even call Brown's previous contract a hometown discount.
At the time he signed that deal, his career high in goals was 17. The cap hit was 3.175M, which doesn't sound like a lot, but that cap was only about 50M around that time.
Dean gambled that Brown would develop in into a 20/30 goal scoring top 6 forward, and it paid off, but it wasn't a discount at the time it was signed.
