It's called a fair market contract.

The going rate for superstar forwards is $10m a year with a full no-movement clause. Guys like Kopitar, Kane and Toews hold all the cards, they can demand what they want because they know there would be a line out the door on July 1st of teams willing to give them that.

This idea that Lombardi is some kind of magician who was going to have more luck than Bowman is ridiculous, the same thing is going to happen when Drew is eligible to sign an extension, just the way it is.

Will be interesting to see how the people who were so adamant about how awful the Kane and Toews deals were now react to this one. I'll give Hyori and K17 credit, they haven't changed their opinion one bit.

I'm personally ok with it, just realize the last 3 year are going to be rough, but worth it if we win another cup or two.

Because perhaps bad feelings start to enter into it, you know if Kopi feels like the Kings aren't willing to offer him a contract comparable to what Toews got, since Kopi and Toews both have similar accomplishments.

In theory, makes a potential buyout with 3-4 years left easier for ownership to swallow if he gets $50M+ in the first 4 years instead of a straight $10M each year for 8.

For comparison, Toews & Kane got $53.4M in the first 4 years.

So you traded your captain after he leads you to another cup in order to keep Lucic, who will make more,a higher cap hit and end up with an equally bad contract in 3-4 years? And you may have to eat some of Brown salary, so you'd escentually could be paying Lucic 8-9 mil.

I'm thinking it's not a full NMC and the reason the negotiation took so long is they were haggling the duration of the NMC.

Otherwise, perhaps DL finally gave in after all this time and gave Kopi everything he wanted. I guess we will know soon enough.

Lots of folks laughed saying that there was no way that the Kings would avoid buying MR out for big penalties. We all know DL is close with Lou, who was a master at this kind of thing. No GM is more thorough than Lombardi. If there's a way, he will be the most creative SOB on the planet to find it.

Subban got $9M. Karlsson will get $11M or more when his deal runs out, and I'm sure Doughty will be looking at a similar range by the time his contract is up.

Doughty's looming UFA is also another reason to sign Kopitar, and let Lucic walk.

The Kings need to win a cup like this season or next, cause Doughty, is going to require Lombardi move a lot of salary out.

As I stated before, it's a hefty price. But keep in mind Kopitar:
- Has led the team in scoring both playoff seasons they won the Stanley Cup
- Has led the team in scoring every year in the regular season except his rookie season
- Has been the team's top defensive forward
- Has been among the most durable players despite playing the most minutes among Kings forwards (only missed 21 games in his 10 year career)

I hoped he would have signed for less, but I'd rather overpay Kopitar than try to replace everything he brings.

As for the NMC, I doubt it is a full NMC. It might not kick in until a specific year, or there's a certain number of teams he will allow himself be traded to.

I know, but when you do the math that's what it could end up if say he wants 7 over 7yrs and you have to move out a contact and eat part of it. If it comes down to it, I'd rather let Lucic walk and still have the cash to pay the younger guys like Toffoli. He's the future of this team.
