Oilers really need a Klingberg. Maybe they figure out it will be easier to get him with retention from Anaheim at the deadline, which is probably why we never see these sign and deal + retention trades in the off season.
They already have a younger cheaper Offensive RHD in Bouchard. They don‘t need Klingberg.

Can't believe that Habs have 3rd overall pick 2019 (Dach) and 15th overall who worth easily a top 5 pick with Caufield.

In my rankings 2019, i'd put Caufield 4 and Dach 6.

I'm soooo happpy.

The future is slowly but surely getting brighter!

How annoying were the herd of zombies calling Dach a bust after the trade.......he is from the same draft as Caufield and has played the 3rd most games and scored the 3rd most points of the 2019 draft class despite dealing with a concussion, a broken wrist, coaching change and an enormous scandal that turned the Hawks into a circus sideshow.

Funny how people quickly forget how great he looked in the bubble as a 19 year old and how he was touted as Canada's top player leading up to the WJC before breaking his wrist.

Who knows how this all turns out but there is legitimate reason to believe that we may have got a core building block at a discount price.

Caufield looks lost with Ducharme. When Marty coming... he play like his talent.

I truly believe that Marty can develop pretty well a player like Kirby Dach, Habs have Vinny too (he can talk with Dach to teach something... Vinny big C too in his career).

People forget that at 19/20 years old season, before his his broken wrist... he put 10 points in 18 games, that's a 45 points pace in 82 games. Pretty good 2nd season to me.

++ Hawks fan on their board say that he needed a better coach, that he show really good flashes and some Hawks fan say that Chicago give up on him too early.

Like Kent Hughes said to him, me too i'm thrilled to have him with Montreal Canadiens!!

Dach had the 3rd worst faceoff percentage in the league, among those having taken 100 or more faceoffs.

On the bright side, faceoff ability can be improved.

Scotty bowman left the organization a week before dach was actually traded. I'm not sure how much they were valuing his input at the time of trade, or maybe it was just easy to pin it on an outgoing team member.

Regardless of all that, I highly doubt the decision to move him was based purely on faceoff ability.

They traded him (and others like debrincat) because they wanted to tear down everything and start from scratch and those guys weren’t their players, they are not attached to them.

That’s what i think

...my line of thinking as well...if not, then they severely undersold both DeBrincat & Dach, imo...

The hawks had no first rounders, and wanted a couple so these two guys were used to start the scorched earth approach.
I would think, both of those kids are breathing easier these days away from the gong show in Chicago.

I doubt is as well.

However, Bowman leaving has nothing to do with his input since he was part of the organization during the time Dach was Hawks property. Clearly, he knew something but who knows if he was misquoted or if there was some other reason for his answer (doubt it may have been payback against a particular member of the org.).

More than likely it was a combination of any or all of these that had the Hawks sour on Dach: injury liability, the player not using certain of his physical attributes or not sufficiently, concerns about his shooting/ faceoffs, concerns about his mid to longer term viability at the center position, mismanaged off season training and lack of overall progression since his draft year (even if there were reasons for some of it).

On the flip side, what was the Hawks’ development approach/ development coaching competence like in the past 3 years? Did they rush the player? Did they put him in the best possible position to succeed and the player didn’t or couldn’t take advantage of it? They might say that they had Kane mentor him and despite that, they didn’t like his learning curve.

Basically, it all points to a player needing a change of scenery and getting one with an org. having a progressive bent and prioritizing development and offence.

Dach’s current off season training regimen has him working intensely hard — I’m guessing he wasn’t as dedicated in his past off seasons but whatever the case, he’s coming to camp healthy and motivated. And probably with chips on his shoulders.

Scorched earth approach by trading away a 21 year old?

I’d get it if they were getting rid of say 26 year olds and older but the new players they’re looking to rise from their ashes with, won’t be that much younger than Dach.

I have to believe the reason they jettisoned Dach was cause they soured on the player not because he’d be incompatible with a rebuild.

He wasn't able to lift weight after his wrist surgery. They rushed him 3 months after the incident, that's why he played 18 games and then had to stop again and i guess last off season he couldn't work out as much because of that. This summer is probably the better he felt in years.

...it's not like the Hawks haven't traded a young guy with talent that they for some reason thought was expendable before...look at Teravainen or Danault...first Saad trade...

True, but there was no scorched earth approach when those other players were traded.

I don’t know enough about how the Hawks handled or mishandled him that way. If they did do that, then it’s to the Habs’ advantage since the good that was under the hood is still there and can be worked upon.

...true, just pointing out that it's not like the Hawks haven't been moving young players with upside for lacking returns in the last decade...
True, but define who the Hawks were at the time those other young players were traded.

That’s right, different management. No connection, amigo.

...very true...which is why I'm always suspect of the Scorched Earth move...my personal opinion is that their new Management is overreacting to "cleaning house" when it comes to talent, especially young talent like DeBrincat & Dach...hopefully Kirby proves HuGo right...

Still love this move. It's worth the low risk gamble easily IMO.
A 5/6 D for a potential 2C, even if he tops out at 3C or flames out that D can be ba k filled by a player 3 years younger which fits the timeline.
I was a Ranov fan, liked the kids attitude and effort but wasn't a difference maker but rather a player easy to root for.
As Estimated_Prophet pointed out kid had a rough to start his career and is still top 3 from his draft class.
I like aggressive management and moves. They all won't work out but I like it.
Go get it Kirby!!!!!!

Even if Dach fails, it will have been a worthwhile move. We traded from a position of depth.
