Exactly. Kassian has 1 year at 3.2 million. So he is playing to stay in the league for his next deal. Don't you think he will have a chip on his shoulder against Edmonton?I’m not saying Kassian is the right guy, but from a cap perspective that type of trade would be better than the current position and address a need on the main roster. If the alternative is burying him Cal the minors, then it’s definitely an option to consider. Anyone in that role is going to cost 2M+, especially via free agency.
Everyone blamed him when the Kings lost off his single digit minutes of ice time, so they were ecstatic when Seattle claimed him during the expansion draft.what ever happened to curtis macdermid? hmmmmm.

Eh, I kind of get it. They only had so many players to protect. This is who they protected:Yet another questionable move by the brain trust
Great. They will be tougher.Kings should look at the following players via UFA at forward:
Milan Lucic
Ryan Reaves
Nick Ritchie
Miles Wood
Garnet Hathaway
Tyler Bertuzzi (too much money likely, but Kings looked at him before)
On D:
Ryan Graves
Ian Cole
Carson Soucy (too much money likely)
Nathan Beaulieu
Andreas Englund
If the Kings can get one of those forwards in the bottom 6 and one of those D in Edler's spot, this would make the team a lot of harder to play against.
BTW those are all Left Handed D - I left out RHD like Gudas, Mayfield, Schenn, etc.
In terms of trade, I would look hard at Nick Seeler in Phily. He has ties to the Kings organization. Same with Deslauries - seems like the Flyers might move anyone now.
Also, if the Kings want to dump salary, how about Cal Peterson plus a pick for Zack Kassian.
We have to figure we will be battling Kane, Kostin, and Nurse for the next few years and the only counter we had was to play McEwen.
I see, when was a good time then? You know, a time when it would have matterered. At this point that doesn’t matter, the damage is done and is getting worse thanks to the FO and Todd trying to compete for the cup and still trying to develop their kids..
unless, Byfield breaks out, Clarke is Doughty 2.0 and Turcotte salvages his career and becomes Richards 2.0, this half ass experiment his going the way of the Hindenburg!
Maybe but then again that would have probably been a bad time tooI see, when was a good time then? You know, a time when it would have matterered.
Yeah, I get it. Many are satisified with the status quo for the last 7 years.Maybe but then again that would have probably been a bad time too
Yeah, I get it. Many are satisified with the status quo for the last 7 years.
The one lost opportunity that no one ever seems to bring up is the first VGK expansion draft…Yeah, I get it. Many are satisified with the status quo for the last 7 years.
No. He has one skill.Maybe we could re aquire macdermid. He has a particular set of skills...
Questionable, yes. Dumb, no.Yet another questionable move by the brain trust
Agree that Byfield or even Vilardi could start the season at 3C. This would probably be fine, just like Lizotte for the regular season. It would be the easier solution, no trade, no extra cap. The issue is just in the playoffs.Nice post. A couple of thoughts:
Theres a pretty good chance Byfield starts at 3C, especially as they see his future through the middle. That creates a regular top 9 wing spot that I suspect Kaliyev is favourite for. As you say a winger likely gets moved also for cap reasons and there is a case for Roy (back that in a moment). They need some grit on the wing to replace the vet winger, but one that can play a bit so we are looking at 2M+ for that so that’s not enough cap to free up.
So Roy, given he likely commands a big pay rise after this year and his value has never been higher NOW is the time to trade him. It’s a hard decision but it’s the tough decisions that count. We could have a right side of Doughty, Clarke and Spence and whilst not gritty it’s only Spence that is truly small. even if Clarke has muscle to add. So we need to balance that out on the left, Anderson, Gavrikov and another LD. That’s where I reluctantly trade Björnfot to get some grit and hopefully someone that can play enough minutes to be trusted. Probably someone in the 2M range, maybe 2.5. Remember Roy played his best hockey with Gavrikov, before then he was at times awful and a turnover machine. Hence I sell high because without Gavrikov he will likely slip back anyway. Gavrikov with Clarke (or Spence) is an exciting proposition.
So me, I bring in bottom 6 gritty winger, shutdown LD.
Out: Roy, Arvidsson, Bjornföt, Walker
Durzi 7D (We need someone with experience to play 7D until someone is ready in Ontario).
The problem is that whilst I think it gives a more balance lineup I cannot see that many moves being made unfortunately. My thoughts aren’t just for next season which is why I’d suck up the Clarke/Spence growing pains whilst also acquiring some decent assets/picks on the way.
Fantasy on my part, I’m fully aware.
Have you ever been in a fight in your life? No. He has one skill.
Questionable, yes. Dumb, no.
Doughty is unlikely to be moved. Without a starting goalie, sorry Pheonix, what is the point of keeping him? He'll be 37 at the end of his contract in four years & it very well could take half that time to move Cal out & get a legit starting goalie.
They aren't winning another with the King's Cap situation & Doughty's contract. Blake & Luc may not live in that reality. What's the point of thinking about the roster without Doughty on it for the next 4 years? There's nothing from him or the team that even hints at him not being here, certainly for next year, and very likely for the 3 years after that, so why bother entertaining the concept? Of course the smarter thing to do is trade him for literally anything and just re-do the rebuild, but it's not happening. The point of keeping him is that he's Drew Doughty, has 2 Cups as a King(even though the actual men on those teams had to keep him in check), and they want to win another one with him. Doesn't matter how dumb the plan is, that's what they want. All they've done since drafting Clarke is reinforce that idea.
They aren't winning another with the King's Cap situation & Doughty's contract. Blake & Luc may not live in that reality.
The idea of moving Doughty came from looking at the cap & figuring out how to bring in a 5-8 AAV center & bring back Gavrikov.
The next step in the logic, if you don't make the moves to turn the roster into a contender, what's the point of riding Doughty's contract out other than marketing?
Blake is probably looking at bringing Gavrikov back, dump some extra cap & trade for a rental C at the deadline & blow more assets.
Just looking at what it would take to turn this into a contender, not what is likely for Blake to do.That doesn't matter. Or it shows no signs of mattering up to right now. They want to win another one with him.
Which is fine, from a I just want to try and make a new team pov, but you can't legitimately think they're getting rid of Doughty for any reason. There's nothing anywhere suggesting that's a road they're going down.
Again, nothing anywhere says it's even a thought. If all they want is to market having Doughty, and get a couple checks for x number of home playoff games, that's just how it is. If Blake can't make a contender with a 2023 $11m Doughty on the roster, that's a Blake issue. Or maybe it's a Kings issue, and no GM could do so, but there's just nothing from either side that says Doughty won't be a King.
That's very possible.
50:50 Cal gets 3-5 games at the beginning of the year unless there's enough cap for Korpisalo & they can't risk losing Pheonix on waivers.Kings need:
2x LHD
Center
Goalie
But you have to be realistic about how they will fulfill these needs.
Center likely gets filled internally with Byfield.
Goalie and one LHD will liked be acquired externally.
Stop putting Cal Petersen in your starting lineup.
Didn't Blake say they expect Cal to regain his "NHL capable goalie abilities" this season? I think that's why many people are putting him in their lineup.Kings need:
