2/7 recap:

Kingston won 5-3, as we've discussed at length, Vilardi had a 1st period hat trick.
Spokane won 3-1, JAD had an assist.
Portland won 8-5, Kehler stopped 23 shots to get the W.

2/8 games:

SSM (Villalta) @ Niagara
Owen Sound (Phillips) @ Peterborough

Would it be appropriate to consider Vilardi a possible "secret weapon" for the Kings 2018 playoff run, or is it way too soon for the kid to be put into an NHL situation?

Thanks!!!

Thanks!!!

Teams who need 18 year-olds to save them are not very good teams.

I don't follow the draft much anymore like I did in the '00s, but I still maintain it was injury concerns that led to him dropping and not simply "skating".

When I watched his draft video or whatever, it was obvious this guy was on another level. When I say that the injury thing scared teams away, I'm not saying that he is damaged goods but rather some teams will take the guy with the clean bill of health and not the one that can't do all the testing at the combine and is going to miss several months following the draft. Add that to the skating concerns and you have the drop. I just think if he was totally healthy, skating issues wouldn't have him fall to 11th because he's too talented.

Hopefully this becomes as stupid as those teams that didn't draft Kopitar because he's Slovenian. Kings haven't had a prospect like this since Schenn.

Something another poster in the prospect thread pointed out...Vilardi's points per game are insane, but his primary points per game are tops by a landslide:

"He leads the OHL with 1.73 P1/G, and its not close. Kyrou is 2nd at 1.41 and Svechnikov at 1.34. I know its only 15 games but damn.... "

2/8 recap:

SSM won 4-3, Villalta made 29 saves in getting the W.
Owen Sound won 6-5, Phillips was scoreless and even.

2/9 games:

Owen Sound (Phillips) @ Kingston (Vilardi)
Sarnia (Rymsha) @ Kitchener - CANCELLED (Weather)
Lethbridge @ Moose Jaw (Clague)
Tri-City @ Portland (Kehler)
Seattle (Strand) @ Vancouver
Spokane (JAD) @ Everett

Yamamoto hasn’t played in more games than he has this season (27 vs. 25) and yet JAD is still leading the team in scoring, so I wouldn’t give Yamamoto too much credit. JAD has still scored on his own this season.

27 vs 25 ?

Anderson Dolan (52 GP) pace of 2 points per game started with Yamamoto’s return.

KopitarFAN said it should be noted JAD has 40 points in his last 21 games.

JAD is a good prospect but this is no coincidence.

Wrong. The 21 game stretch (actually 22, my mistake) I am referring to started on 12/16, Yamamoto left for the WJC on 12/12 and didn't return until 1/12. Half of the 22 games I am referring to he was gone.

Yes. Yamamoto has played in 25 games. JAD has played in 52.

Yamamoto missed the first month + because he was with the Oilers, and he missed from mid-December to mid-January for the WJC.

Does having Yamamoto help? Sure, that's pretty obvious. Has JAD relied on Yamamoto? No, he's done a lot on his own, too. Not to mention that JAD is doing this as one of the younger 2017 draftees (he was eligible for the 2017 draft by three days).

JAD has 17 goals and 16 assists in the 27 games he's played without Yamamoto, which is 1.22 p/g (and 0.63 g/g).

JAD has 15 goals and 23 assists in the 25 games he's played with Yamamoto, which is 1.52 p/g (and 0.6 g/g).

In the 10 games from December 16 through January 10 (while Yamamoto was at the WJC), JAD had 11 goals and 5 assists for 1.6 p/g.

In the 12 games since Yamamoto has been back, JAD has 9 goals and 15 assists for 2 p/g.

He's clearly been able to create offense on his own this year. Having Yamamoto affects his assist totals the most. He actually scores more goals per game without Yamamoto in the lineup.

That was one of the concerns when he was drafted--how much is JAD being a complement vs. how much is individual--and I think he safely showed us what he could do in Yamamoto's absence. Obviously he's an amplifier but I'd be more concerned if JAD floundered.

What will be very telling is next season, Yamamoto will be 20 in September so he'll be eligible to play in the AHL, safe to assume he will. Spokane will also be losing all of their other top scorers, except Ty Smith.

So it will be the JAD show. Who knows, maybe they'll decide to move him if they don't think they can compete, given that it will be his last Junior season. Anderson-Dolan turns 19 in September.

JAD won't be the offensive dynamo long term, but saying he relies on Yamamoto is a bit much.

Remember he's the youngest prospect from last year's draft class. If he was born four days later, he would have had to wait to be drafted in 2018.

I mean, Andrei Svechnikov is a consensus top 3 pick for 2018 and he's scoring at 1.5 PPG in the OHL. Even if you wipe away JAD's 2 PPG surge, his Yamamoto-less scoring rate is on par with a top 3 pick.

He also shares the league lead with 5 short handed goals.

There's plenty to get excited about with him.
