JAD won't be the offensive dynamo long term, but saying he relies on Yamamoto is a bit much.

Remember he's the youngest prospect from last year's draft class. If he was born four days later, he would have had to wait to be drafted in 2018.

I mean, Andrei Svechnikov is a consensus top 3 pick for 2018 and he's scoring at 1.5 PPG in the OHL. Even if you wipe away JAD's 2 PPG surge, his Yamamoto-less scoring rate is on par with a top 3 pick.

He also shares the league lead with 5 short handed goals.

There's plenty to get excited about with him.

Right, I don't think anyone was saying he is gonna be a star, but a good 2nd line player isn't out of the question.

Here is something fun I found, where he ranks in the WHL among '99 born players.

1. Heponiemi 96pts (2.34 ppg)
2. Glass 74pts (1.54 ppg)
3. Bellerive 73pts (1.38 ppg)
4. Almeida 73pts (1.35 ppg)
5. Anderson-Dolan 71pts (1.37 ppg)
6. Mattheos 70pts (1.30 ppg)
7. Fix-Wolansky 63pts (1.17 ppg)
8. Jokiharju 54pts (1.20 ppg)

I don't know if it's coincidence or happenstance but we do seem to get those young players quite frequently. Or maybe it's just JAD and Vilardi and I'm having a recency moment, heh.

Kempe was among the youngest in his draft, but then again we drafted Pearson who passed over twice. I think its mostly just coincidence

Just wanted to pop in to say how much I've been impressed with JAD this season.

He looked really good in the first half of the season without Yamamoto, and even when Yamamoto was sent down he was pretty much useless for his first 10 or so games. JAD doesn't really rely on Yamamoto as much as people think he does. They have good chemistry and Yamamoto is a little better than JAD, but he doesn't carry him.

I don’t trust WHL numbers much. Didn’t Weal, Vey, and Kozun, come out of the Dub?

Edit: autocorrect:(

They all either played on absolutely loaded teams (Kozun), played with another future "star" (Vey played Etem, and Weal played with Eberle) and 2 of the 3 had their real breakout year as a 19 year old.

Not to mention size was a huge issue for Weal and Kozun.

2/11 recap:

SSM lost 5-2, Villalta stopped 19/24, was pulled after 2 in taking the loss.
Kingston won 3-2, Vilardi had an Assist.
Owen sound lost 4-3, Phillips was scoreless and even.
Sarnia won 5-4, Rymsha had an Assist, a +1 and was 17/22 at the dot.
Portland won 5-3, Kehler DNP, and Strand had 2 Assists.
Spokane lost 3-2, Anderson-Dolan had a Goal.

I think Vilardi will be better, junior numbers just give me pause. As do AHL numbers. Guess you have to project somehow.

2/14 games:

Kingston (Vilardi) @ Ottawa
London @ Owen Sound (Phillips)
SSM (Villalta) @ Saginaw
Moose Jaw (Clague) @ Regina
Vancouver @ Portland (Kehler)
Kamloops @ Spokane (JAD)

The most impressive take-away I had at the time of the draft on Vilardi, was from the co-owner of the Windsor Spitfires, former King, Warren Rychel:

We just caught up with Rychel, who selected Vilardi second overall in the OHL Draft a few years ago. He described him this way:
“Hockey rat, never comes off the ice, loves the game, very respectful, hard worker, strong on the puck, strongest player from offensive circles down in the CHL.”
From a scout who has watched Vilardiall season "Greatpick. RW who can score and has size. Was talked about in top 3.

Now, TRULY consider Vilardi was 17 last year, the entire season and called "the strongest player in the CHL (all major jrs) from the offensive circles down"
and that HOW could this be possible, when the strength a kid adds, from 17 to 20 ?? How can a 17 year old, playing against 18,19, and 20 year olds be the
strongest, circles down? This is a new definition for INSANITY. Or, Insanity to the 8th power. it's like calling a 17 yr old baseball player, the best power
hitter among his 17, 18, 19, and 20 yr old peers. Impossible. This was reason enough to be excited about him. Even if Rychel was hyping him a little.

2/14 recap:

Kingston lost 4-3, Vilardi had an Assist.
SSM lost 6-5, Villalta DNP.
Owen Sound won 4-2, Phillips was scoreless and even.
Moose Jaw won 6-3, Clague was scoreless and +1.
Portland lost 4-2, Kehler stopped 15/18 in taking the loss.
Spokane won 3-2, Anderson-Dolan had an Assist.

Funny of all the Kings prospects to have great games, Vilardi was one of the few who didn't. Even stay-at-home dman Jacob Friend had an assist for Owen Sound.
