GDT: Kings off-season thread

Soucy is a subtly very good player, but he's not gonna draw the kind of offers that a Sergachev or Chychrun will. There's a lot of flash there that Soucy doesn't offer. He's never gonna be a top pairing guy. What I put down as what I would offer if I'm the GM (which I'm not), is something on the order of two 2nd/3rd round picks, which I think is about the right value for Carson Soucy. Maybe even a little high.

I think Seattle is a particularly good trading partner. I'm sure they'd like to field a competitive team, but they're filled with middling talent. You see a guy like Jeremy Lauzon, who played similar minutes to Soucy, fetch a second rounder at the deadline. They need picks, prospects, and players to build out a team. They also have an abundance of LHD, but fewer RHD. The only player who is untouchable on their roster is Matty Beniers.

If you look at the Krakenboard, their posters were basically asking for about the same for Soucy near the deadline. Grans or Durzi + pick or just a 2nd round pick. Durzi has only upped his value since then, and Soucy is only one year away from UFA. I think you might be overvaluing Soucy even more than I am.

The way you described him made it sound like he'd be quite the acquisition. If Sea fans are ok with even just a 2nd in return, I don't know how he alone would make for a good enough summer from an additions standpoint.

It's about how well a player would fit the needs of the club. Everyone knows we need size and a little more sandpaper on the back end. We also need some more scoring from the back end. Soucy, to me, is a Willie Mitchell type player who does nothing flashy, but is generally strong as a 2nd or 3rd pairing D. If Edler or Maatta depart, the Kings need a player who will fill that gap. More speed than Edler (not saying much) and a better shot than Maatta. Quietly, Soucy ends up on the plus side relative to the rest of his teammates each season. I think he really would complement a guy like Spence or Walker.

Anderson-Doughty
Bjornfot-Roy
Soucy-Spence/Walker

That's a really well balanced and much more physical defense corps than we had this season.

NO

Edler got his cheeks stroked by the Oilers nonstop. He’s not even tough like he used to be. Maatta did really well

All the guys that came back from injury really struggled, Edler was certainly one of them.

I'd be ok giving him another chance, he was a monster before that. Not my #1 option but all those guys were so banged up and he was a different player after.

Kings might end up re-signing Edler.
Not the worst idea. Could also match that with a RD, LD swap. Buy a year, get someone that can hopefully make the team by the end of the year. Can always upgrade LD at the deadline. Also get Edler his 1,000 games. Had a surprisingly high ppg.

If a legit upgrade isn't available, this is better than paying to bring in someone slightly better than Durzi would be on his offside.

Good LD that might be available
Theodore, Vgk in cap hell, not trading in division
Chychrun
Provorov
Ghostbeer (is he good?)
OEL
Nic Hague (offersheet, but that's not happening)
Nate Schmidt
Soucy

I would love a Sergachev, Werenski, Romanov, they're just not available for trade. Kings could trade for a younger D like Buffalo's Mattias Samuelson or Wpg, Logan Stanley or wait to see if Kirill comes over in the near future. In the meantime we have Bjorn & Mikey around 0.11 PPG. The LD market is literally so bad that OEL isn't that bad of an option.

After watching Oilers get multiple breakaway goals, even an injured Draisaitl, not interested in guys like Zadorov. We need snarl, but he is just too slow.

always thought Ghostbierre was a good player....just has a big contract. Always comical as to how many Flyers players ink a huge deal and then immediatly get traded. Carter and Richards come to mind- along with Ghost Im sure there are a bevy of others.

Not on board with Edler returning. Either go with what we have or trade assets for an improvement at LHD that fits for the LT. I'd throw Maatta in the same boat unless he wants to sign very cheap and fight for the 7th spot.
I'd see Edler returning as a vet depth for injuries & get to post season. Todd may go full vet goggles & play Edler 30 mins a night. It's a risk.

Looking at his stats, I was surprised to see that he scored at a near 40 point pace this season. And that's with no PP time.

He and Doughty had the same amount of EV points. They both played roughly the same amount of games.

Edler was also some how a +4 in the playoffs. Him and Strecher were the only Kings Dmen in the positive.

It's certainly not ideal. But it may be a last resort if they can't find a good trade. There ain't diddly on the UFA market for LHD.

Why? This was an average year of production for Edler. His points/game for his career times 82 games is over 36 points.

He would be a good option if the cost to add a younger guy is too much.

The thing about Edler and Maata is they wouldn't be fighting for the 7th spot because they are better than most of the other guys, like Roy, Durzi, and Spence. I'm all about that trade option because with another exceptional D man it makes it possible to break the younger guys in more efficiently.

It's a necessity because once Clarke and/or Faber enter the mix, Durzi and Spence are going to really have to elevate their games to have a shot at the roster and Bjornfot is going to have to continue to improve.

Blake said he wasn’t 100% but came back to help out, which is probably why he was in and out a little bit. It certainly explains why he didn’t reach previous levels. He’s certainly worth considering as a fall back position.

A few of those guys looked like totally different players. Edler was one. Toby was another, poor kid looked like he didn't trust himself or his legs. Lemieux notably as well. Tough to make free agent calls on some guys but of course they're privy to more info than us which I'm sure helps.

I will say I'm glad Edler came here. Dude was miscast as a top guy late in his career but as a 2nd/3rd pairing guy he's a great value when healthy. The legs aren't quite there anymore but he's a lot smarter and definitely meaner/heavier than in the past, dude was an absolute warrior for us and I'm sure he wants to go out on his own terms. I'll be rooting for him whether he ends up here or elsewhere.

I AM curious what Blake does to attack the LHD side, that seems to be the biggest question mark along with scoring.

Make the home ice more slushy on the RW where the visitor shoots twice?

Eh I’d rather not. The kings should look for a more permanent player to take his spot rather than a stop gap. Blake should make some trades this off-season and take care of the LD issue. Wouldn’t be opposed to getting a good back up goalie either

Might have something to do with the fact that he's 35 years old and scored 8 points in 52 games last year.

I guess we shouldn't be surprised that he had the best P/60 of any D-man on the team. That was expected.

Lots of people are saying Vlasic will be bought out.

Blake is a former teammate. TMac has coached him.

His game has fallen off a cliff in recent years. You wonder if he just needs to have something to play for. Possible PTO if no one signs him.

Was also on Doughty's pairing for the Olympics and they were tremendous for Canada.
