I guess my initial reaction was shock and as that has worn off I don't hate at all, I just question why we acquired another goalie. Bishop is great and all but I just don't understand, is he splitting duties with Quick?Obviously this has to just be a rental right? Or do they sign him for a season and excise him in the expansion draft? Maybe Lombardi really does not want to lose anyone on the team that much? I have no idea what's going on, there has to be another move right? I don't have much faith in Cernak so it's not much of a loss imo, and I appreciate what Budaj did during his time here but again it's a business it doesn't really bother me that he was traded. Should be an interesting time until the deadline. My hope is that Gaborik is the next shoe to drop.

we went from a having a backup that turned into an AHL goalie + a third string goalie that played himself into a starting to having two bonafide NHL starting goalies, and we didnt give up much of anything. hard to not like it even though its a bit off the wall

Despite Budaj playing well for his age and ability, he let in crushing soft goals. Goals that had no business going in the net.

I mean back breakers.

More backbreaking than standing on your head for 60 minutes only to lose 1-0? It goes both ways, and only one of those scenarios is 18 guys letting down one.

I can remember literally one game where this happened and we won it. It was the Pens game.

I can't remember Budaj being THE reason for a win outside of that, but I can remember quite a few where he was a major factor in a loss.

While this is true, when that 1 goal you gave up in the loss is the 1st shot of the game and is considered bad, it deflated the team. Budaj had been doing that too much, and it was effecting the team to the point where the teams body language was "aw ****, not again".

Say the season is a complete bust from here on out and we miss the playoffs.

Its Cernak for a 5th. With expansion draft kevlar.

And hey, if we lose the next 2 games we still have time to peddle Bishop for a 4th or some damn thing by Wednesday!

Hard to judge trades this year with the looming expansion draft. Perhaps Lombardi wants to expose Quick and sign Bishop for less term and money. Perhaps he want to dangle Quick in a trade.

If nothing else this provides more variable flexibility.

Can we safely say after 10 years of going in the right direction Lombardi for the last 1 year plus has gone in the wrong.

Kings are giving up assets and they are not even in the playoffs lol. The Sekera deal was similar. The Lucic deal will haunt us for years. Same with the Versteeg deal potentially.

ok I admit this trade came COMPLETELY out of left field and I don't really understand it unless it's a front end of another deal but LMFAO at all the usual Negative Nancy's calling for Lombardi's head over this TERRIBLE deal. Really? They gave up nothing.

Thanks to Peter Budaj for his efforts this year. I'll root for him til the end of his playing days.

You can say it, but not safely. The season isn't over yet and the playoff picture remains undefined.

The sky isn't falling quite yet, although the possibility of it doing so is certainly there.

The more I think about it, it's not a bad more... Can't throw Quick in like nothing happened. Came off a long term injury and will need some time, a luxury kings don't have. Plus for what they gave up, I won't lose sleep over it

Every coaching staff in the league would be drooling if they had a Quick/Bishop tandem. A few days ago our push for the playoffs was Budaj/Zatkoff. I think it looks just a tad improved, don't you?

We traded a 7th round pick and a prospect that is projected to be a bottom pairing defenseman (if he even plays in our big club in 5 years) for a 5th round pick. How is that a mismanagement of assets or like the Sekera trade where we gave up a 1st rounder?

Like the 2012 team, this Kings' squad will need to win games 1-0 or 2-1, and having two no. 1 goalies allows us to do that. Great trade by DL here. I just hope we get a winger for a low draft pick that can move up to a 2nd or 3rd round pick if we make the playoffs or advance a round.

Okay now that's it's sunk in...

No matter what, this move prevented the Flames from drastically improving. There is no one else of Bishop's caliber on the market and their goaltending is their Achilles' Heel.

He could still be traded before the deadline, and it would likely be for much more than what we paid. If the Flames do want him, the cost is Bennett. If the Stars want him Sharp, Spezza are possibilities as well as possibly adding another first to our draft.

If we keep him, Lombardi makes sense. We will have a number one starting every night. They will also push each other.

Last but not least, we will still be able to trade his rights before he hits UFA status. This would allow us to add other assets at the draft and give us some flexibility.

All in all, for what we gave up and for what was expected Bishop would be traded for, I think we did pretty good. Dean didn't give up any significant assets and we got one of the top players available this deadline.

Let's Go Kings!!!

Bizzare. Probably the first time in history of the NHL, a team went from having a #2 goalie for 3/4th of a season, to having 2 #1 goalies in 2 days time. I see DL's point in the tweet "have a #1 goalie every night playing". With every point crucial, this could make the difference getting in the playoffs.

IF Kopitar and Gaborik were producing, things would be looking up.

I guess if any team near the Kings in the standings were trying to get Bishop, this could be a good thing. Was looking at teams in the East, to see if a flip could happen.
Not sure. I guess if Philly thinks that Bishop could be the difference in closing their 6 point gap to a playoff spot, that could be possible. Given the DL and Hextall connection. From looking at their roster, not sure who would fit and if the cap would work for Philly...assuming 1 of their goalies comes back, though. Is Couturier worthy? Seems like he never reached his potential.

As far as losing Cernak, pretty much a bummer. With the emnergence of Forbert, Ladue and Gravel - and having Clague, Moverave, in the system, maybe Cernak is pegged below them as well. Even Reddekopp may end up being a player, as well as
Matt Roy. You gotta give up something for a 2 out of the last 3 years Vezina Finalist.
Just obvious the #1 need is offense.

The next 72 hours will be interesting.

I didn't like the idea of giving up assets for a goalie at first since offense is a bigger need but I think DL did pretty well on this trade looking at what he paid. He didn't give up any super valuable assets and he got the best player back in the trade. I know Cernak was a 2nd round pick but maybe the scouting staff isn't as high on him anymore and we probably won't be a playoff when he would be ready anyway.

I'm just going to sit back and see what happens. This was certainly not something I was expecting so we'll have to wait and see if there's more to this trade or just watch the Quick/Bishop tandem do their thing.

That said, I'm really hoping the offense can step things up a b... lot. A lot.

I was abroad, so I wasn't on the internet for 24+ hours, now I come home and see this... what the fuuudge?? :amazed::laugh:

But the real question is: why do we need this? We can only play one goalie at the same time?
Don't they trust Quick's health enough? Are we using Bishop as trade bait like Boston did with Jones? Is there an Eastern team that Tampa didn't want to trade Bishop to?

I'd have rather used those assets for a skater, but we'll see what it's worth.

You're gonna love Bishop. He was a fan favorite here in Tampa and for a good reason. He is arguably the best goaltender we ever had in franchise history. One of his biggest upsides is his ability to play the puck. There are countless examples where tape-to-tape outlet passes from him landed on a forward's stick on the opposing blue line that resulted in amazing scoring chances / goals. Take good care of Big Ben!

Duuuude, read Lombardi's quotes.

We have five sets of back to backs left...Lombard knows that Quick can't play every game remaining in the season....not to mention, they have to ease up on him due to coming back from injury.

This gives the Kings the option to play a #1 goaltender every game...which they absolutely need since they are fighting for a playoff spot. The end.
