I mean, I think we're all on roughly the same page, and maybe it's just semantics. No, that's certainly "not enough," but I also have a hard time qualifying it as "unacceptable" given the drafting team in those years was working with low or no picks. Between 2010 and 2016, we had exactly 3 first round picks at 15, 29, and 30, and each guy is a contributing player in Forbort, Pearson, Kempe.
-4 of the 5 2010 picks are NHLers--Forbort, Toffoli, Weal, Gravel in the 1,2,3,5 rounds. Only one to not cut it is Kitsyn in the 6th.
-2011 was mostly trash unfortunately, not gonna defend that one.
-2012 We only had Pearson, because we had no 2nd or 3rd--and still got NHLers in Colin Miller (5th) and Paul Ladue (7th). We turned another 7th round pick into our current goalie. And the enigma Porkins from the 4th.
-2013 we had no first, but landed a current NHLer in Zykov in 2. No 3rd rounder either. Fasching (4th) became McNabb. Bartosak (5th) became an *******. Brodzinski (5th) is sorta TBD but that's a good pick. Kubalik was the 7th and I don't care much for him but there are some here that will fight you to the death over his potential.
-2014 we nailed Kempe. I didn't like McKeown but others do. Jury is out on Lintuniemi (2nd) but clock is ticking. Amadio in the 3rd is starting to pay off. The rest...meh.
-2015 again we had no first. We had Cernak (2nd). Dergachyov in the 3rd I really really liked but Russia is causing issues there. And of course Wagner in the 4th is a good pick.
-2016 we only had 4 picks and no first. Clague I'm not as high on as others but that's a good 2nd round pick. No 3rd, and Moverare in the 4th (jury out). Eyssimont is a good 5th. Forget where Jacob Friend is now (7th).
-Then of course you have 2017--jury is still out but Vilardi, JAD, Villalta, Anderson, Phillips, Hults, Rymsha all looking pretty good.
So again, to me, it's less a 'bad drafting' problem to indict scouting and development and more a problem of no high picks with which to take true impact players. Again, could do better? Sure. "Unacceptable?" I have a hard time signing off on that given it looks like the last two drafts are nails and are widely getting applause. I know Ziggy's big concern is we aren't landing "impact" players--which is vague enough to have plausible deniability I suppose--but there aren't a lot of home runs to hit from pick 90 on...and that's a LOT of NHLers considering those middling picks.
