Adams has a ton of cap space to work with and should take his time to spend it. Might be some unexpected players available during and after UFA / RFA season. He also talked about flexibility moving forward which might explain the low 70 million cap range. Getting ready for that Dahlin contract. Reinhart is going to be a very interesting signing as well, both by term and cap hit. We just can’t be fleeced into another Skinner type of deal.

Buffalo Sabres - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps

Looking at how they only have 4 forwards under contract for next season is weird.

How much goes to the 7 or 8 RFAs that you can expect to be on the Sabres roster next season will determine how much flexibility he really has.

I remember when Murray traded McNabb to LA for 2nd's and scrub prospects he fell in love with as a scout and that making me worry about whether he was going to be a good GM or not.

Than Botterill made the worst trade in team history with ROR and I thought, it's official that Botterill is a terrible GM.

When the news dropped yesterday of this trade, my immediate thought was Adams might be pretty good. This was a great trade on many levels.

While Adams has shown a bit better idea of the need for filling that role than the previous GM, I'm not entirely sure if Staal fits the style of play Ralph likes to play.

While I like Staal as a player, I question if he will be productive in the way people think he will be. It's a good trade for bringing in leadership to the team with so many young guys. I love it for locker room purposes.

While I know people wouldn't care if he retired, because of the cap savings, I would consider that circumstance a total failure on Adams and re-question my first statement. MaJo, while he may be expensive (something fans didn't mind at the time of the signing), he still was our most productive forward outside VO, Eichel, and Reinhart. Losing that player, no matter if you NEED to upgrade or not, for nothing, should be considered a terrible trade.

I'm hoping this Staal trade is driven by the thought of tread on the tires that will help the team win moreso than just a GM comfortable bringing in guys he knows personally.

The trade was really much worse: Nicolas Deslauriers and Hudson Fasching from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for defenseman Brayden McNabb, forward Jonathan Parker and two second-round draft picks.

Alex Lintuniemi and Erik Černák were the players drafted with those second rd picks. The former is playing in his native Finland, the latter is a pretty good player for the Tampa Bay Lightning. They got him from the Kings in the Ben Bishop trade.

This was a good trade, little risk high reward. But it does not confirm anything about the ability of Adams. Few (none) GMs are all good or all bad, so while I'm happy with this trade I am a little suprised by the number of people saying it indicates we have, or could have a good GM.

If I'm scoring KA at home:
June 16, 2020: +2 for not being Jason Botterill.
June 16, 2020: -1 for "y" in name, although that should probably go against his parents... sometimes, as in baseball, the rules require you to score the error, not a fielder's choice.
Sept 16, 2020: +1 for Staal trade.
Net: +2

(Laaksonen and Murray signings count as "0".)

My bad, thanks for correcting me, unbelievable that we gave up the picks. Yea I remember now. I was driving and listening to WGR, then hearing that come across the air. I was like, WTF? Everyone was super excited about Murray and I was one of those peopole until that point. That is when I thought to myself that this guy might not know what he was doing. Light years ahead of Botts though.

That Murray trade is worse than you’re remembering. He sent Mcnabb AND TWO 2nd’s to LA for 2 scrub players.

edit; oops I see someone already mentioned this. Ignore my post.

Laaksonen was technically Botts

Very nice first move by Kevyn Adams.

I have to give him props. He found us a good, competent #2C before the team even took the ice fir the first time. That’s something Botterill couldn’t do in 2+ seasons, and it was a self inflicted wound! He already had the best damn 2C in the NHL on his roster when he was hired!

I hope this is a sign of what’s to come! Lord knows we could use some positively here in sabres land.

Well, not for nothing but at least Adams seems to have a bit of an idea as to what is wrong with team and won't need two seasons of evaluating what is wrong with it before acting on it.

Forwards
Eichel, Skinner, KO, Staal =28.3
RFA Reinhart, Olofsson, Kahun, thompson , Lazar = 13.7
Promoted Smith, Cozens =1.7
3 vacant F..1 top 9, 2 bottom 5

F=43.7

D/G=21.2

Dahlin 1 Joki 1 Risto 5.4, McCabe 2.9 Miller 3.9, Borgen 1
Ullmark 3.25, Hutton 2.75

Cap=64.9+ 3 F+ 1D

Montour trade bait for 1 top 9 F might be around $3M
2 F = 4M total.
Bottom pair LD=3M

Adding $10M put thrm around $75M

If they had some of the plays like Girgs, Larsson, Vesey might be trade chips to use as secondary pieces in trades.

Could flip Miller for similar LD then resign Gilmour as 7D for 1M

With not many contracts it hard to do the issue of cap space is higher than what’s actually paid. It would be different for heavy vet teams who are 1-2 years from UFA where first yrs are usually higher than late years.

You realize those 2 2nd were place holders for a player to be named later in the Darcy trade of Regher to LA? It was likely do rsomething along the lines of pick one of these 4-6 forward prospects before next yr deadline.

Similarly. Murray did the work around the Scandrlla-Foligno trade

Murray did the workaround the ED because vegas GM owed TM around the trade with Washington( when he was GM there in 2015) where the player did not report.

do you have ANY credible sources backing up ANY of these claims?

I'd take a gamble on Kessel given the right price. Outside of last year he has been elite for a long time.

It called logic....

LA GM— I’d like to get Regher...woukd you like player X?
Darcy..I haven’t research your players. We can’t do future considerations.
LA GM..ok how bou this I’ll give you a coup,e future picks not thus draft in 2013 but in future drafts in 2014 and 2015 and you look at this set of prospects
Darcy..sure

Murray talked of another deal with Minnesota in interviews but ED was coming up and Ennus was injured. The deal was around Scandella for Foligno which at the time said Minnesota was losing the deal. Then trading Pominville for Ennis ehere Ennis had the edge of bring more buyout friendly and cheaper balanced out the money in the deal. ED had to happen and zennus had to be cleared. The deal happened really soon. After bots took over.

Why then did vegas GM take a secondary player from Buffalo and only get a low pick for not taking other p,Ayers? Thus is how the GM wotld works.. you build this relationship on trust and fairness and promises. You screw people every time you can you burn bridges.

no, it’s called convincing yourself of a situation you created in your mind.

I don't know how I feel about this. Happy that Adams is looking for help? Disappointed that they're not bringing in a fresh voice?
