I don't mind if they hire an experienced assistant for Adams, but Tallon's resume has looked bad in recent years.

Gallant
Marchessault
Bobrovsky contract
Matheson contract
trade Trocheck

Again, Tallon would not be making the final decisions. Just an advisement role in the organization. Tallon wouldn’t be the one signing Reinhart to a team friendly deal like He did Huberdeau or Barkov. That would be up to Adams.

I understand that, but I don't think Tallon is a good candidate for this role.

Tallon can't be absolved for all of Florida's missteps, but I don't think Gallant is not on him.

Gerard Gallant reflects on 'disappointing' and 'unfortunate' end with Panthers ahead of reunion in Vegas

But he remained powerless, the result of a “real disappointing” finish to his 185-game tenure in Florida as general manager Tom Rowe added “interim head coach” to his nameplate. Rowe took over as Florida’s GM after the 2015-16 season, replacing Dale Tallon and bringing a different philosophy to the front office.
The roster was flipped. The decision-makers were rotated. Gallant could sense change on the horizon, even if he said the Panthers didn’t give him a reason for his firing in Raleigh.

I mentioned it earlier, but it's not very clear who the primary decision makers in Florida have been in recent years with Pronger & Joyce also with prominent roles in the front office. That being said, the moves around the expansion draft and since then have been pretty bad as you've alluded to above.

Am I the only one who finds it worrisome that the Sabres have only signed Murray? Other teams have gotten extensions done.

I don't think you save any money by waiting until the last minute. Lazar and Kahun should be easy to get done. Lindblom signed for 3yrs, $9M. Olofsson would be a bargain at that. If they're interested in bringing Larsson or Girgensons back they could be working on that now. I'd try to get as many pieces in place as I can now so I can concentrate on trades and free agency.

Do they have a cap person still?

Murray was a 2 year ELC, so it was a relatively no-brainer. But, I wonder if that is an issue.

Nobody jumps out to me as a cap person.

I assume and hope that they will be very active in the trade market. Teams are still playing playoff hockey. Most players and cap space from the Sabres should be available when everyone can make trades.

Larsson imo is valuable and necessary no matter what they do in the trade market. Buffalo's center depth is Jack and him. They could add two centers in trade and still need Larsson. They should be negotiating with him right now but that doesn't mean he's amenable to re-signing before looking into other options.

Hello, Sabres fans here's a proposal for you guys:

Kyle Turris ($2 mil retained) + 2nd or 3rd for Colin Miller?

Reasons for both sides to do it:

  • We don't have to buy out Turris, we retain the $2 mil for 4 years, but it's better than 8 that it would be with the buyout. We also have to sacrifice a pick but luckily we have 5 picks in the first three rounds this year and all of the future picks.
  • Turris is not as bad as it sounds, he just doesn't fit in Nashville with all the centers we have.
  • Buffalo needs centers to play behind Eichel and they need seasoned vets to shelter the kids. They have Cozens and Mittelstadt in the pipeline waiting and Turris would give them some time to develop. The last couple of years of deal Turris probably would be the 3C but at $4mil it's not the end of the world.

I'd pass.

I don't like Turris in general. I really don't like the thought of four more years of Turris on the wrong side of 30, even at $4M per.

If he only had one or two years left, maybe. But even then, probably not.

I get that people have to start somewhere and experience isnt the be-all-end-all... but what part of the Pegulas' track record with this franchise would indicate they could get it correct? This 'flat management structure' is also doomed to fail. I get that in night school, Kim Pegula learned that flat management could be an effective approach, but not in the NHL.

Maybe Botterill started out with a flat management style and sharing things with Terry Pegula and getting his input led him to make one bad decision after another. I don't think the communication issues cited by Pegula existed until recently. Perhaps Botterill realized Pegula was making him look like an idiot and he closed off lines of communication. I don't think Botterill had the comfort level with Pegula where he could say "that's a really bad idea".

Sneaky Joe DiBiase on the WGR nightcap used this analogy on his show when Adams replaced Botterill.

He said, this is like drafting a Quarterback in the 6th round. Adams might be good. He might be the "Tom Brady" of Hockey GMs. But more than likely he's not going to amount to anything.

Yeah, but he's replacing Ryan Leaf, so I'll take the 6th.

I dont love it .

College QBs have 4 years to show off what they have, and occasionally a guy develops late, and makes a jump in the NFL

New GMs have no track record to evaluate, so it's really not that great a comparison

It was a pretty bland interview.

Our media struggles at good questions.

I think Adam's 'aww shucks, I'm a new guy' take won't last long, because this fanbase will give him no honeymoon.

His development takes were confusing, and pretty robotic, so nothing interesting there.

I didn't really like the 'I've spoken with Eichel's agent' bit, but I don't know, maybe that's a common thing?

I did like the 'talent, but not fit' part. Hopefully, trades are coming.

The rest was scattershot. It'll be about what he does, not says.

I would imagine that the new GM of a team reaches out to the super star's agent. I wouldn't read into that until there is something tangible to read into.

Yeah, I don't know how those things work, just sounded strange for him to mention. I wouldn't really care about talking to Jack's agent...he's under contract for 6 more years...I'd just be talking to Jack directly.

You reach out to put on a "this team is turning it around now" facade and know he has other clients he reps (none we would want anyway) that may be in the market

It's how you avoid misunderstandings that blowup in the media. Players confide in their agents and the agent feels a need to do something. It's how the whole Jack won't sign an extension if Bylsma stays mess began. Eichel was probably just expressing frustration and his agent took it to different level. Murray had no idea something like this was lingering beneath the surface.

Maybe there's something to this? I see a number of ex-sabres in the league who appears to be way better fits for their new respective teams than when they were playing for us.

Other than RoR, no Conn Smyth winners but some strong performances as 2nd tier and support players. McNabb, Sekera, Foligno, Ennis, shit... Gerbe is still active!

It just doesn't seem work out here for them....
