The coaching staffs in Buffalo and Rochester have received contract extensions as well.

In addition, Justin White, who served as a video coordinator last season, will now serve as the team's video coach.

Ed Gannon has been promoted to director of physical performance and head strength coach. Gannon was named the team's strength and conditioning coach ahead of the 2015-16 season.

Bob Mowry is now the team's associate athletic trainer under head athletic trainer Rich Stinziano. Mowry joined the organization in 2011-12 as the Sabres' assistant athletic trainer and has also spent time with the Amerks as their head athletic trainer.

All of them? Does that include Don?

So he said “the thing” again this morning… in his camp opening press conference: that they have set a goal to win the Cup.

Interesting that KA talks about Dahlin and Power as a pair of contracts they want to get done long-term. I wonder how that sits with Dahlin, who was maneuvered into a bridge deal? Rumored 5 year term preferred by Dahlin is an interesting number:

5+3 = the 8 year deal he may have wanted.

Why do you believe he was maneuvered into a bridge? Players and their agents have a say in these things, even more so when the player is of Dahlin's pedigree.

You're right, it's just speculation at this point since I don't remember the information that brought me to this line of thinking. But I'm not going out on a limb saying players don't prefer bridge deals, always think they are worth more than they are, and will take term if the AAV is where they think they should be.

players don't prefer bridge deals
I believe this has changed, at least for now, as we approach the end of the cap limitations due to COVID.

Players seem to want a 2 or 3 year deal so they can see where the cap goes (Up, up, and away! most likely) and then cash in when there is more capital in the system.

Rumors abound about where the cap is going in the next 3 or 4 years. Nobody really knows where the "AAV should be" even two years from now. Nobody wants to get locked into a long term contract and end up leaving millions on the table.

Bridge deals are a specific thing. They are the contract between a rookie contract and the much sought-after long term deal.

UFA is completely different and I agree players have taken shorter deals this season anticipating the cap going up.

The long term/mid term thing for players is a new-ish wrinkle.

It would make sense for Dahlin to want to do 5 years. It'd put him as a UFA at 29 and get another bite at a long term deal. Going to 32 is doubtful he'd get a 6+ year then.

Take a 5 year deal at 11M per, could get a 6-8 year deal at 13-15M per when the cap is higher.

Sign em on the same day, 8x8-8.5 for Power, 8x11 for Dahlin and dangle the captaincy for leverage. Getter done KA

It was nice to hear him single out Ryan Johnson when asked about the organizational depth at defense. Seems like we'll see him up in Buffalo when there's an injury that requires a call up. In Adams' words - he showed maturity and that "he can help us win hockey games".

Johnson was one prospect that I followed pretty closely based on the stigma associated with having been acquired with a pick from the ROR deal (which never made sense to me), the tendency to include him on various trades proposed by so many board "experts", the whole he wants to play for the organization in which his father is employed thing, the decision to return to Minnesota for his final year rather than turning pro and finally his desire to graduate on time and with his class rather than signing at the end of the season to burn a year on his ELC.

I'm no expert in assessment of prospects - but I watched a lot of Golden Gophers games on the Big 10 network and he impressed me with his skating, edgework, vision and passing. But then, upon his signing having heard about the great relationship he had with the Sabres developmental staff, the process he went through to consider all of his options and still pick Buffalo helped me to further understand that we know so little about what is happening behind the scenes, but don't let that hold us back from wild speculation, crazy theories, and needless hand wringing.

At this time in my life, I prefer to control what I can control - and that is to stay out of the speculation, theories and hand wringing -and just enjoy the ride.

Bumping this back up.

It is going to be fascinating going forward in 24-25 watching how Adams manages the players around the core. He has a little grace period as three of the big contract's NMC/NTC do not kick in right away, but I imagine they will go into a period where it will be a cycle of ELCs and tough decisions on second contracts.

I really do not see Mittlestadt sticking, and if guys like Peterka and Quinn REALLY break out, they are going to want similar term. Same goes for Levi.

I love the moves so far, but now is when it gets interesting.

I won't be shocked if Mitts re-signs for a 2-3 year deal and sticks around for a bit. And I do think there is a chance that he signs a 7-8 year deal for $5ish M AAV. I get the feeling he is a much bigger part of the room than the fans think he is.

Given how much Adams cares about the room, I could see Mitts being the forward version of Samuelsson and they lock him up, too.

I could see that.

I have a slightly different vision in respect to Mitts. I see him as a great playmaker and would love to see him with Quinn and Peterka. Benson and Savoie had great seasons with Connor Geekie a big centre-so Cozens would centre them bringing size and grit to that line. Tage, Skinner and Tuch another line. Krebs centres another line which should be a good two way line. Maybe it does not work-but I would like to see it tried.

While I appreciate the sentiment, most of the time Benson played with Savoie and McClennon, Geekie had his own line (often with Pederson) that rarely shuffled either of the smaller guys onto. The very few times Geekie played with Benson, it kicked Geekie’s production up. Then Savoie got McClennon and Pederson on his wings.

I bow to your deeper knowledge--I read somewhere that Geekie had been centering that line but it may have been only occasionally;-I did not probe further to my embarrassment!

Not going to lie, but a Benson-Cozens-Peterka line sounds so fun.

Skinner-Tage-Tuch
Benson-Cozens-Peterka
Greenway-Mittelstadt-Krebs

That would be an interesting top 9 for sure.
