A playoff team 1st. Even if the team had a down year I gurantee that 1st still wouldn't be a top 10 pick. You wouldn't have to give up any young guy like Kaliyev/Kupari either.

Not sure LA can or should etch their names into the 2023 playoffs. Carolina would be the scary one.

He'll be traded before anyone can offer sheet him, if he's traded.

Beyond that, there have been only four offer sheets signed in the last decade. One was retaliatory, and the other three were matched. They're not common, and the team not matching is even less common (as in, it's only happened twice in 25 years).

Frankly, if part of the reason people say Fiala can't fetch a big return is because he doesn't have a contract, an offer sheet would be a pretty easy way for Minnesota to get him signed, and then trade him, with a contract, for more than the 1st, 2nd and 3rd LA wanted to give up for him.

Right they are not common, but it gives teams a reference for how much they would have to give up. Teams know that Fiala & the Wild are likely going their separate ways. Just like Reinhart & Buchnevich. Why give up top 10 pick / top tier prospect when Guerin won't match that offer sheet. I don't think he's going to be offer sheeted, but what he gets in a trade will be close to that 1st/2nd/3rd value because teams know that's an option they have.

If Fiala was staying with Minnesota I feel like he would have signed last year.

Teams that want him still have to pay the price for him, even if they know Fiala and the Wild are going their separate ways. Otherwise, another team that wants him will get him instead.

No, not peanuts. It depends a lot on what OTT's pick is, but their 1st plus a prospect/player like Pinto or Boucher might do it. There is definitely value to taking on cap.

I can tell you this. If you put merely some decent talent around Fiala then you've got one hell of a player. He played with absolute crap for about 170 games that he played with MN. We are talking guys that have been waived through the league like Victor Rask, Pitlick, Bjugstad, Marcus Johansson, Nick Bonino, among many others.
Once he got with Boldy about 35-40 games ago his production reached a different level because he was playing with some talent. Boldy is nice, but still a baby. Guys like Norris, Batherson, Stutzle, nvm Tkachuk( are more than good enough to make Fiala go. Ennis, not so much.

I'd hope Dorion wouldn't trade Pinto. The guy was playing great before he got injured. If Guerin wants Boucher as the add-on though, I'd do it.

I'm not at all attached to Boucher. Pinto stings. I'd do Boucher, 1st (it'll be top 10 I assume), 3rd and call it a day.

Nobody is giving up a top 10 pick for him when they can just offer sheet him instead. LA could sign him 8 million for 5 years and it's a 1st, 2nd, and a 3rd.
Ottawa will never let you get to that point (hypothetically of course). I think Pinto is off the table, but a top 10 pick + Boucher or JBD or even Thomson + a lesser pick is 100% on the table - or is sure as shit should be.

And I'm worried Dorion would trade Pinto lol. He has a history of overpaying to get players he likes.
He better not. He's such a tool, but hopefully he realizes you can make this deal happen without Pinto. And he should be ready to make the deal if it's there. But...alas...it's Dorion after all.

Guerin isn't going to wait until offer sheets are possible, he'll move him before July 1st. And there should be a lot of clubs in the bidding, I think that will keep the price high even if Guerin can't delay a deal. I could see some teams offering a bit more than a mid 1st+2nd type of deal.

Are you trying to pretend Benning wasn't in love with OEL? The guy had a bad contract, but he still had value. A big d man that could play 22+ minutes a night is something a lot of GMs obsess over. Other teams were interested in OEL. Retaining money for 6 years is also huge.

The deal is wildly different. Garland wasn't getting a top 10 pick by himself.
That's the way Lebrun broke it down.

I can't speak to Benning's feelings, but let's say you're right and OEL did have value. The contracts going the other way all had negative value, and Eriksson's was like 6 mil. $12 million in bad contracts is worth 2 1sts easy. So you're basically saying the Coyotes traded Garland, a positive asset in OEL, AND took on 2 1sts worth of negative contracts? Come on man. That's insane.

Everyone pretends OEL had no value in that deal. Arizona fans love to do it too. The deal wasn't Garland for 9OA and OEL for scraps, it was Garland+OEL for 9OA+2nd+scraps to make Vancouver's cap work.

Regardless, it's not a good comp for Fiala, who is significantly better than Garland, and also won't be traded with another high profile player attached.
If OEL had value, why didn't they trade him to another team that didn't have to send $12 mil in bad contracts? No other teams wanted to pay a past his prime OEL 7.25M for the next 6 or so years

I mean his full NMC and the fact that only wanted to go to like 2 teams probably didn't help Arizona at all. Not sure where you're getting the "no one wanted him" narrative from, but we know that's not true.

Even if you think Fiala would accept a 5 year deal (and why would he?), the Wild could just match and then have until the season starts to find a trade.

A completely unprotected 2023 1st.
LA is historically underperforming its expected goals numbers, and though they haven't clinched they've surprised a ton of people this year (believe we've scored 45 goals less than expected by this point). Adding Fiala to that lineup would be massive in addressing the xG issue, and thus makes the "unprotected" part of the '23 1st much less scary to our fanbase. It's also unlikely we'd miss Doughty for over half the season again, along with the million other injuries we've had.

Offer sheets rarely happen though, so you're probably right anyways.

No they can't: If matched, the player remains with his team under the terms of the offer sheet he signed and he would not be eligible to be traded for one year.

Fiala is almost the exact same size as Kaprizov, and only 7 months older than the reigning ROY. This is a present and future star in the league.

He had an NMC. OEL got to decide where he wanted to go. He only would accept trades to 2 teams. The Canucks & the Bruins. Bruins tried trading for him, but they couldn't come to an agreement. It's impressive how constantly wrong you are.

Would trade our first for Fiala this year but not sure Minnesota wants it in a weak draft, wanted the Nico + Fiala connection for a while.
