Confirmed with Link: Keith Yandle Signs One Year Deal With Flyers ($900K W/ NTC)

I thought we all ready got rid of Gus.

Freindly reminder that York and Zamula will start the season in the minors so you can see that sexy 3rd pairing of Yandle/Braun.

We saw last year how they expected young guys to take a step forward and relied heavily on that. It didn’t happen. So, the way I see it, they’re trying change that and protect against that.

it’s a minimal risk signing. There’s bigger things to get angry at. It’s not worth all the anger its getting.
Because this type of player has been acquired by the Flyers for years now. It's not Yandle, it's that what this signing represents to many fans.

Keith Yandle isn’t some awful player though. I referenced earlier he’s not Brandon Manning. He isn’t the player he used to be, but he still can be useful, much more than some of the plugs we’ve seen that blocked Sanheim/Myers/Ghost for all those years.

It’s hard for me to get up in arms over an almost league minimum contract for a player who has some NHL role in extreme usage. He’s better than Morin or Prosser or whatever. But it’s a wet blanket for getting one of our top prospects in a small, totally reasonable 3LD role.

The irony is just galling though after an off-season of broken record “poor defensively” talk, and then they sign an old defender who is as 1-way as it gets. He’s Gustafsson with a longer track record. Vigneault had no clue how to use prime Yandle in New York either, which is weird he’d want to sign here. We do joke, but getting all of Hayes’ friends is…..kind of happening. Is Chuck a secret Chiclets fan?

For a team that was “poor defensively” last season, it sure makes lots of sense to add two defenseman who are legitimately poor defensively (Ristolainen and Yandle). Chuck’s the smartest man in a room of 1.

I get that, and in a vacuum it's not terrible. I'm not specifically angry at it, I'm just saying that it represents a fundamentally flawed philosophy...at least in my mind.

Oh, I no longer joke about it. It's real. Giroux will be gone this offseason and they'll use his money to pay for Johnny Hockey.

That’s fair. And I really really like York but progression of young defensemen is not linear. There’s a chance he doesn’t look ready, and I feel a lot more comfortable with Yandle as a bottom pair D compared to Morin.

And of course there will be injuries throughout the year. York will get plenty of playing time this year and we will start to see who he is.

I'm so confused. To not go out and sign another defender you're relying on two of Braun, York, Zamula, and Morin to play well and there to be no injuries. Yandle allows any two of them to be out of the line-up if they aren't performing. (Yes, Yandle can block York and Zamula as well, but that's just shifting whose performance gets evaluated first during the season).

Instead of going out and signing a garbage AHL-NHL tweener for $750k, they get a guy with tons of experience who can actually contribute in a #5/6 role. Yeah, he's got problems with his game, but that's why he's a bottom pairing defensemen signing for $900k right now.

He's 100% going to play in front of both York & Zamula.

So now our Defense is worse and their NHL games meter ticks up more slowly.

One thing that concerns me is he has an Ironman steak going that played into decision making with Florida this season, and the players won out over the coach in that scenario so make of that make what you will because we trust the coaches a whole lot less. But this is a heavily sheltered player even though the cost isn’t prohibitive.
