There’s definitely a segment of the fan base that can be persuaded into things via PR. It’s working currently to some degree with some. They want to believe things changed even if it’s of the blind variety subconsciously or not. That’s probably not enough to get those people to buy STH especially even with the caveat of believing. You know this team is gonna suck for a few years at minimum going forward. So that’s not really worth price of admission. But that’s probably enough to get public opinion back in their favor for who things could be down the line.

They do need to focus on defense, right now it's a shambles.
On offense, they have Foerster and maybe Brink this fall, Gauthier next fall, they have a shot at a decent top six.
But other than York, nothing is certain with this defense.
Until the finals he had a save % > .920. When he faltered, so did the team.
He wasn't pulling a "Price," but he probably had the best Flyer playoff until Hart in 2019-20.
Flyers just haven't had goalies take them for long PO runs the last couple decades.
Sometimes it's less about being unstoppable than simply dependable.

Lol. Why the faith that the same scouting department that was once heralded as unearthing Prov, Sanheim, Hagg, Myers, and Ghost will magically now be able to identity above average NHL talent?
The same scouting staff that has found two stars since 2006.
Jones, and Briere are "new", and I use that word lightly. The rest of the antiquated morons who should be homeless begging for crack are still employed. Nothing has changed.

When it comes to high draft picks, it's less the scouts than the GM/top personnel guy.
Scouts matter more after the first round, especially after the second round b/c top guys aren't going to watch 1000 hours of film.
But they will carefully scrutinize the top 10-20 prospects.
So Patrick, Provorov is probably more Hextall than the scouts, Gauthier the same with Flahr/Fletcher.
Probably the GM for Sanheim #17, Farabee #14, York #11/#14
Players like Cates, Ersson, Desnoyers are probably more due to scouts.

It's true in every sport (well, maybe not the NBA b/c there are so few legitimate prospects).
GM's future depends on the success of 1st rd picks, scouts on later picks, so GM always dominates the room with high picks.
When you get to the 3rd or 4th rd, how much time do you think the GM spent on the 50 possible picks (before the draft starts)?

Zito made perhaps the highest degree of difficulty NHL trade in a decade and hit a grand slam. You describe him as such.
Someone Chuck Fletcher drafted scores a goal against HC Reykjavik in the Icelandic league in his mid 30s against a team consisting entirely of geldings with trowels for skates and you can see the plan in action.
This is why you get baffled reactions.

That trade wasn't even for this season, it weakened the team in the short-run, but help build a core for the long-run.
Last year he goes all-in at the TDL and comes up empty, this year he plays the long game and gets lucky.
Which is why I hate TDL trades, while it worked for TB, they were a deep team that had already gone to the SC Finals.
But most of the time the best strategy is continue to add value over the long run and hope to get lucky.

Yes, his brilliant plan was to fool the league, catch them by surprise after flopping last playoffs and have Bob have an historic goalie performance even though he's choked in almost every playoff his entire career (2018-19 was his only other good PO performance).
13 PO games with Bob in goal, all strength xGF is 44.29%. 5x5 SVA 45.58%
Florida is being outplayed, Bob is the only thing that's keeping them alive.

The point is that he didn't go "all-in." He pushed some chips into the middle of the table last year which you should do when you have a good hand. Sometimes the cards just don't go your way.
Once again, I recognize that you cannot look at anything that Zito (or Sakic) does without bias due to fantastical narratives.

Trading (2) 1sts, 3rd, 4th and a 27 goal scorer for two rentals isn't going "all-in"? What is then?
Tkachuk was different, that was value for value, so was Reinhart, 1st rd pick and top goalie prospect.

If Zito was smart enough to recognize that Verhaeghe was a top scorer who just needed a chance, he should have recognized that Tippett was a potential goal scorer that just needed a chance. If one was a brilliant move, by the same standard, the other was a mistake.

Let’s not forget Florida was an 8 seed who got into the playoffs on the basis of a late-season heater from journeyman AHL goalie Alex Lyon, who was their starter to begin the postseason.
Now they’re riding another goalie heater from Bob to reach the Cup final.
It’s a bit reminiscent of the 09/10 Flyers. An 8 seed, but a team capable of doing damage if they got goaltending.
