Hilferty was on 32 Thoughts and said they interviewed candidates that wanted to hire their own coach and GM and they said no. Not exactly revelating news, but you can see how they ended up at Keith Jones - a Yes Man.
We knew that before the process started, they were committed to Briere. For good or evil.

And it's bad process. Committing to a coach and a GM where you interviewed no outside candidates and giving them more power than the incoming president is horrid process especially for an organization in it's current position.

You shouldn't defend this.

Colorado did the same with Sakic. Assistant VP made the GM a figurehead until he replaced them, and had more power than the nominal President.
It doesn't matter who has the title, what matters is who has the authority, Briere will sink or swim.
Jones supposedly has the authority to fire him, but in reality, Briere would have to screw up for Hilferty to approve that move.

In the end, whether it's Briere, or some hypothetical President, it's still a gamble.

Keith Jones is the King of HockeyGuy cliches and focusing on having a "good blueline" first and foremost. It's harder to be out more than I already am, but if this means another year of trotting out Provorov as the 1D and watching him go through the motions as his contract slowly starts to expire, just take me to the loony bin. Take another defenseman in the top half of the draft again too. It's worked out so well.
Check this out from a couple years ago. Jones says they need a major makeover. Need to be stronger and bigger physically and stronger mentality. It's all about toughness for him. This might not be pretty. The only redeeming thing in this video is Taryn. :)

Was Danny Briere an alternate governor for a couple of years before he was named GM? Danny Briere was the Assistant to the Regional Manager. He was never a Vice President. He had no power. He did nothing.

Joe Sakic's superiors were competent in KSE. Danny Briere's superiors are not competent.

They're not the same.

Not everything this organization does needs to be defended. They should have started with a clean slate. It's more of the same no matter how much you ignore it.

"Alternative Governor" at the end of his playing days, i.e., PR figurehead with no real authority. Get real.
Sakic had no real experience when he took over, it was based on personal evaluation and his playing experience.

Briere was groomed for this job, learning the different facets of administration in Maine, learning skills at Wharton, spending a year observing as a "special assistant". Doesn't mean he'll succeed, but he wasn't hired on a whim.

Joe Sakic came in at the top and worked his way down. Any attempts to compare the two are done so in bad faith.
P.S. He was hired on a whim because people that have shown that they're incompetent hired him without even looking at a single other person and going as far as claiming that "They knew he was their GM the first time they met."

Your attempt to belittle anything that Sakic did/does while propping up the busy work that Briere did is just so unbelievably disingenuous.

The report was that the power structure was such that Briere had total control over the hockey operation, I don't even know why they're calling this a President of Hockey Ops other than it's what anyone knows to do.

the 32 thoughts podcast has an interview with dan hilferty, he says a lot of good things but does mention how bob clarke, homer and bill barber were the first people to reach out to him when he got the job. lol.

"Within the hockey ops office danny is thinking about he needs and his sense is there will be some changes, there will not any more major hires. Wants to make sure theres no wall between business/hockey side."

The only guess that I have is that they believe that Jones having that title gives him a better standing and makes it more likely for people to listen to him rather than if he was named the Grand Poobah of Propaganda.

Fluffing Sakic doesn't change things, "Alternative governor" what the F--- is that title? Like "Senior Advisor."
He wasn't even assistant GM.

The NHL board of governors met with commissioner Gary Bettman in New York on Wednesday for its annual December get-together. The two-hour meeting primarily was used by Bettman to update the league's governors and alternate governors about what has transpired in the negotiations with the NHLPA during the 81-day lockout.

Governor - Josh Kroenke: He's the son of Avalanche owner Stan Kroenke, who also owns the Denver Nuggets, St. Louis Rams and Arsenal and Kroenke Group, a real estate and development company.

Alternate governors - Pierre Lacroix (Avalanche president), Mark Waggoner, Greg Sherman (Avalanche GM), Joe Sakic (Avalanche executive advisor).

Shows you the old boys club wants to remain in tact, which is scary, can't wait til they die off at this point since they'll never be fired

They were a year late like they always are. Chuck should have been fired with AV. A real President of Hockey Ops comes in and hires the new coach and makes the hockey decisions. Briere gets the title bump to GM if you like him that much. Allows you to stealth tank for Bedard. But no, too much pride to say the R-word out loud so we let a lame duck GM make a top 5 pick, spend more assets, give out contract extensions, and operate that disastrous trade deadline. Good job. Good effort.

I have no doubt he believes this, but if you want to be optimistic for a second, he thinks they have the grit on the roster already (lol) and that they need to find the skill. Will they target the right skill, I doubt it, but the first step is admitting it.

An Alternative Governor for a few years is sure as hell a lot more involved than being "Assistant To The Regional Manager" and working for the Maine Mariners.

Once again, Sakic was learning with a competent front office. Danny Briere learned under an incompetent front office.
