Deady come off the top rope with multiple accounts was unforeseen.
I think they wanted Foerster and Ersson to be part of a playoff push in the AHL, but I think they weren't trying to do everything they could to win games at the NHL level. Both players would have helped the NHL team, but what was the point in the second half. Unfortunately, the way things turned out, a few more points wouldn't have changed their draft slot (6 would have). This simply isn’t true. They sent him back down because they wanted him to be part of a playoff push and get experience in the playoffs. Whether you agree with that or not is irrelevant, but it’s not because they hate playing youth or hate talent. Doesn’t matter how many times you repeat yourself, you still can’t make it a fact.
We had the perfect man for the jobA tank would have been difficult last season, the three bad teams were really bad, Flyers were 16 points better - you'd have to shed a bunch of talent at a discount to get that bad.
Again, THEY made that choice so Foerster could be part of the playoff push. This is what they said, this is what they did, that was the action, and that is fact.
After the press conference, Hilferty said there were 100-plus candidates.
"Some of the candidates who have great reputations of their own in hockey, they had a hard and fast way of, 'This is the way I do it, we'll see if the other two meet my standard.' I just didn't view it that way," Hilferty said. "I viewed it as, 'No, no, we want someone with true leadership skills,' but we also wanted someone who understood that we, as an organization, felt that we had the best coach to lead us in this next phase — he's a teacher, he's patient in terms of building the team and he wants to do it the right way. I'm not going to repeat what I said about Danny, but he has those skill sets, he has that leadership capability.
"I got to know Danny, I can tell you from a personal point of view, watching him as a leader, as a well-organized, experienced person in the space, interim tag or not, I can tell you from the first day that we really interacted, I viewed him as the next GM of the Philadelphia Flyers," Hilferty said. "So, the process went on in my head, conversations with Valerie, just watching how he and Torts interacted, we just felt strongly there was no need for a process. We had our general manager."
How Jones hire happened, what has Briere's ‘full attention,' more in takeaways
How the Keith Jones hire happened, what has Danny Briere’s “full attention” and more in five takeaways from the Flyers’ press conference Friday. By Jordan Hallwww.nbcsports.com
Two things stand out, none of this "Torts will whip them into shape" stuff that the advisors pushed,
They see Torts as a teacher who isn't going to push for quick fixes to save his job.
I think what they see in Briere is less his hockey experience/knowledge than his management skills, attention to detail, organized, bright, receptive to different opinions and willing to learn. Corporations expect growing pains when they promote executives, they want people who can grow into the job and excel. It's obvious he impressed Camillo years ago, and has been groomed for the job - he wasn't an impulse hire.
It's not just that they settled for Torts/Briere, it's their vision of a rebuild, they've said repeatedly it's a multi-year process, so there's no pressure to win now, they're willing to let Briere grow into the job.
I can't believe they made Keith Jones the President of Hockey Ops

Torts won't be calling the shots, for one thing, I don't think he's interested in doing so.
Rather, he's on the same page with Briere, and I think intangibles will be a key component of player acquisition, I don't think Briere will be trading for a player like Laine.
We'll have a better idea by mid-July, but my prediction is they're going to focus on speed, high motor, strong work ethic and hockey IQ.
Someone like Benson sounds like a good fit.
I can see Briere looking to add prospects in trade who are blocked but have the qualities the Flyers value, players they would hope to coach up.
The commitment to a multi-year rebuild means they don't have to fill holes or find players who are NHL ready, they can gamble on upside.
Next guy to go would be Torts. No question.I would take a bet that the Flyers don’t make the playoffs again until at least one of these three are fired. Possibly all three.
If they see Tortorella as a teacher then they're idiots who aren't paying attention.
The allegedly rebuilding Flyers pick at #7, and then don’t pick again until #87.
If they see Tortorella as a teacher then they're idiots who aren't paying attention. The guy has insisted he has zero interest in teaching, and the players confirmed he doesn't.
Quoting so he can see, even though we already know he saw it and refuses to acknowledge itWOW what a massive f***ing shift away from "Torts is definitely calling all the shots" last summer. Wow.
If Briere is on the same page with Tortorella, go ahead an skip the next few years. Nothing worthwhile is going to happen.
They're going to focus on defense-first grinders. Anyone they draft, that's what they're going to make them into.
