I'm curious to find out what domino will fall first. Will it be an RFA extension? Will it be a trade? It would be fascinating to be a fly on the wall at the recent meetings.
I have to think that Kreider is the first domino, regardless if he stays or goes. That in turn will set of other chain of events, like Buch staying or going.

I am not considering a Trouba contract to be the first, since I ass-u-me that it's pretty much a forgone conclusion. Gorton still has some wood to chop. The logjam at forward needs to be addressed. And are we really looking at both Shattenkirk and Staal comprising 1/3 of the defense?

Obviously we don't have much of, if any idea what kind of offers the Rangers are currently fielding for Kreider - but I wonder if patience is a virtue here.

I'm not talking about keeping him until the trade deadline. The Rangers have had their fair share of luck with avoiding injuries to Nash, Grabner, Zuc, Hayes, McQuaid, etc. I wouldn't tempt fate again if they intend to ride him out for the year.

Ferland is gone and after Dzingel there aren't any wingers out there close to Kreider's production. Will his value be a little higher once all of the UFAs are signed?

Would it benefit the Rangers to go into camp with Kreider and wait for things to shake out with injuries to both the Rangers roster and other teams in the league to see if they become a little more desperate?

No worries - I dont feel attacked.

It's a valid point. There's no reason why Kreider can't become Tomas Holmstrom 2.0. I won't go too deep into the weeds but one concern is that Kreider's contract could cause issues once some of our prospects pan out and need new contracts. I guess as long as we don't give CK a NMC then it might work out.

I still don't see how we keep him without trading Names and buying out Smith at the very least though.
And if that is what it takes, then lets do that, if it can be attained. Oth, Names can be one of those players that may produce better this year. Contract year, right? Might be very tradeable come deadline, he has enough of a reputation and could at the very least get us a 2nd if all goes well. Me thinks.

My thoughts. Panarin is what Buchnevich was supposed to be and isn't. Remember just before Buchnevich came over and he was going to save us? Shoo-in for 80 points a year?

No, I actually don't remember this

He was seen a promising 3rd round pick, but 80 points? What about his play in the KHL indicated he was going to be that?

I think the contract situations make it 95% likely Kreider is moved. I mean, you're looking at the difference between locking up at 23-y-o Buch at $4-5MM for 4-5 years (or $3-3.5MM for 2-3 years) vs. locking up a 28-y-o Kreider at $7MM x 7 years.

I recognize the value he brings, and that he possesses a different skillset from the other wingers on the team, but for it to be at all realistic to keep him over Buch, he'd need to take a MASSIVE discount, both in terms of AAV, and in particular/most important, term. I'm thinking it's something more like $5-6MM for 5 years, max.
This is def one way at looking at it. Thing is, this year has to be Buch's breakout season. He needs to make MAJOR strides to be demanding anywhere near what is projected.
Trading Buch "instead of" Kreids will probably be a mistake, but still all in all.......Buch needs to take that next step. Right now he is starting to enter that twilight zone area, where we WANT so much more from him, like Kreider some years ago (and still?)

man I would absolutely love to keep CK. Having him as our 2nd line LW would be such a luxury. But it really makes no sense to have so much tied up in wingers. Plus he's about to hit his UFA payday, no way he takes a discount nor a shorter deal. He's looking to cash out. I just hope he goes somewhere where I can still cheer for him. I.e not Boston, Long Island, Newark, Pitt, or Philly
Don't forget Montreal. Ha! Do you think Montreal fans would say let bygones be bygones? Make bestest of friends with Carey? I am cracking up just thinking about how they might be infuriated with it. Still laughing.

Honestly, I would have rather the rangers pass on Panarin and trade CK for a center and continue rebuilding through the draft.

Getting a player like Panarin and losing CK kind of cancels out the latter.
Each player has a skill set the other doesn't possess. Competitive teams are constructed with different player dynamics that complement one another.

If JG can trade CK for a C great. There are several players I'd like to see moved before CK.
I'm supposing you are pretty young, if so yeah, you have time to wait. I don't want to "rush things" per sé, but not willing to wait 5 years to make PO's again either.

Speaking only for myself, I've never quite been sure that Chytil even is a center. That goes back to before he was drafted.

So it's not so much me giving up on Chytil as the second line center, so much as not really being all-in on the concept of him being a center to begin with.

Personally, I don't care where he plays as long as he becomes a good top 6.

Signing Buch to a 6-year deal at $4m-$5m would be another great offseason move that's already full of such!
Love Buch (and his promise) but there are NO such guarantees that he will become what we want. Yes, he started figuring it out last half, but ideally I would like to see a more consistent FULL season from him before handing that out.
It would be a bit of a gamble, and we cant be handing out these deals to just "anybody". Wasnt the inconsistency of Kreids and Hayes over the years enough to be just a little concerned with Buch and his disappearing for games at a time?. Or, am I just being paranoid?

And that's why Gorton and Co. are getting paid to be able to make such decisions. Very easy to push it down the line and deal with cap issues due to higher $$ for upcoming UFAs.

There literally was not a SINGLE post like what you described here.

I get that Buch is younger and shows flashes but they now have other guys that do/will do what Buch does even better. They don't have another guy like Kreider. He adds something to the top 6 that Buch doesn't. I hate making this situation an either or but which player's skill set will be missed more or harder to replace the next few seasons, Kreider's or Buch's?

How much time do you think Buch will get with Panarin this year? How much will that help his numbers, even if he still struggles to find consistency in his game? No matter what, I expect his value to go up this year, and based on the discussions that happened during the draft, his value is already pretty high. If he puts up good numbers but the coaches feel that is more of a product of playing with Panarin and that he's never going to find that next level on his own, then trade him. Buchnevich at a good cap hit and locked up for 4 years will be worth a lot, particularly to teams that struggle to attract free agents.

Would the return on Kreider down-the-line outweigh his presence in the top-six this coming season? Especially on a roster with 7 u25 hopefuls, having a secure top line in KZB would allow some slack for youth alongside Panarin. Trading either of Kreider or Buchnevich quickly becomes a matter of shoe-horning a replacement rookie into a top-six position.

At this point they probably should

Ugh.

I don't know if I could stomach that again! What happens if they are in the race? Let's just say they are in 3rd place in the Met and hold a decent point cushion on the first wild card team?

Do you ride with him into the playoffs and see what happens? Honestly, the way I've always looked at it is you play to win a Cup. If you are in the playoffs - you go for it. That's what professional sports is all about.

Now that doesn't mean to unload youth and bring in UFAs and older vets who've won cups to get it done, it just means at the very least to go for it with roster that got you there. Trading a top-6 vet who is a big part of the offense (especially now being on the second line where he belongs) flies in the face of that. Especially a guy like Kreider who is battle tested with almost 80 playoff games under his belt, a trip to the final and is one of the few on the team who physically is built for playoff hockey.

So if the Rangers were in that position (the same position the Blues finished last season) I believe they would hold onto Kreider and be in a real pickle. There is a big decision to be had here, and soon, if they can't or won't extend him.
