I feel like the only way this deal can be fine is if Lindgren is better than what I'm expecting from him. To me, he doesn't seem like much. But if he's a good RD prospect, I can stomach this deal. It's a little overpayment from JR if Lindgren is a good prospect.
When he was drafted, he was labelled high-risk, high-reward. However, since he's been drafted, he's been more of a "safe" d-man. Stylistically he's reminded me of Stralman when I watch him play. Not saying he'll get to that level but as a Leaf fan I would say he's underrated.

This isn't the guy to use that first one, if you are going to trade him. Frankly, Malkin and Letang need to go and the next couple years need to be about Crosby and the kids.

This team will get 85-95 points next season and go out in the first round- at best.

Hurray! Great JOB! WE DID IT! Everyone around the league is laughing at the old man

Well, next year is most certainly NOT the year to try and rebuild since Minnesota is getting our first round pick anyways.

We have no first round pick next year since Minnesota is getting it, so 2021 would not be the year I'd want to choose to deal Malkin or Letang if I did decide to go that route. At least wait until we have a first round pick before choosing such a dramatic attempt at retooling.

FWIW, Lindgren was progressing well for us, but just didn’t have a path in Toronto.

He isn’t flashy, and likely needs another year in the AHL, but he’s not necessary nothing for you guys.

Aberg has already signed in Europe/Russia for next year IIRC

What i see happening is JR is paying and paying and paying for different names but the same player.

Kap, I like, but we had Kahun. So we just keep making all these trades to get teh same player.

Let's look at Jack Johnson and all the D. We had Ian Cole. Then we make 10 million trades just to sign JJ, which we will need to buy out, and none of JJ, Gudbranson, Oleksiak, etc. work. So then another trade will happen and we will give up more and more and more.

Why?

I'm what world is the fringe prospect Toronto sent us equal to Hallander?

A world with a lot of drugs.

Trying to look on the plus side -

Aberg can score, if by some miracle we unlock his game he could honestly be the best player involved in this
The fact it involves Rodrigues means the Maatta trade tree is alive and well, and with three pieces in play, now has a good chance of becoming some long-running byzantine thing
Kapanen isn't an awful player
I can stop caring as much

I did say just last night - JR is getting desperate and if you trust him right now.. you are insane.

I don't think this is as bad as some people think. HF will always overrate prospects. They ALWAYS will. But hot damn JR is in full overpay to panic mode.

1st round pick might never play for the Leafs.

Hallander might never make it.

Kapanen could light it up here.

Need to assess in a few years

My issue is this. Kap in a vacuum for the 1st isn't a bad trade off. Kap to the Pens for the 1st is bad because I don't think he will fit next to Sid (or Geno for that matter). He seems too tunnel visioned for that. And I say that as someone who quite likes Kapanen and got to see a fair amount of him in TO. So, now we have 2 RW that potentially won't work in the top 6 (Kap/Horny - for reasons everyone knows). Rust who should remain next to Geno. And Tanev who likely won't leave Sully's love affair 4th line. I hope I'm wrong and he blows up here, but I just don't see it.

Yeah this is a good point.

My biggest issue up front for years isn't that they are bad players. But bad fits.

Kap seems very much like another potential bad fit. It's like all they are seeing is wheels. There are lots of other attributes to hockey players outside of how fast they can skate.

WTF is this crap? Come on, Mario and management need to wake the hell up already.

Rutherford is incapable of retooling a roster without ruining it first, clearly.

And why is he so afraid of acquiring someone completely new? We just keep rehashing the same players. Sullivan's system is so complex that we have to reacquire past players? My god, what a cluster&^%$ of a situation.

And when is he going to starting SHEDDING salary, instead of taking on more?

This is absolutely terrible. And I actually like Kasperi Kapanen. Imagine if I didn't.

Listen, I like Kapanen. I think he'd be great on our 3rd line, and go a long way toward the supposed desire to go after youth and speed again.

Trading what essentially amounts to the 15th overall and Hallander for Kapanen, with some other worthless garbage thrown in by both teams, is f***ing PUTRID.

Aberg has produced well at the AHL level, but has yet to translate that in the NHL.

He has also bounced around a ton and has only played 37 games with one team in a season. I thought I remember there being some interest around him in Nashville, but he must have fizzled out.

I like adding Kap, don't like moving Hallander, but what do I know. The window is now so feast while there's still food at the table.

To be 100% fair.. Kap does make Rust (who has been awful in the last couple playoffs) expendable to an overpayment if someone wnats to.

My favorite part of this deal is he pissed away half of our tradable assets for something we don’t even need.

A 3rd line RW.

God what the f***..

Exactly. Like everyone has said, it’s not like Kapanen is a bad player, but if I’m trading two of our best assets, it better be for more of a sure thing than Kapanen. Just more tunnel vision from JR.

This makes losing the draft lottery sting even more.

Lindgren isn't "plus Hallander" good

Too bad Kap will somehow drive Sullivan insane, and he will be demoted to 3rd and 4th lines after 5 or so games, and then be healthy scratch until inevitable injuries hit. In the end he will be traded for scraps. Meanwhile JJ will keep playing 18 minutes a game, and MM will still be #1 in net and getting scored on high glove-side.

Bjugstad and Murray will be gone this summer. There's the cap saving

The asset value is bad today and it's bad for something we don't need. Sure the bounces could work out great for us in the crazy world of hockey but there ain't much point trying to shine a turd.
