Yes and I don’t see how we can do the same. Honestly, how they did it is weird. Because everyone thought they were dead after the trades they’ve made.

I think trying to repeat it is just going to land us in that middle spot for years and you don’t want to be there wasting picks and prospects to try to make the playoffs every season

  1. They drafted decently and have a great homegrown cast. They sorta botched the 3 1st round pics they had that one year but still got Debrusk outta it. him and Pasta are a big part of the youth movement. Then add in McAvoy and you have 3 really good and young players contributing offensivley. Not to mentiom that other ofd Grzelcyk who has good size oh and Torey Krug
  2. They kept their draft pics while Krecji and Bergeron and Marchand were still around and surrounded them with talent

TBH, Boston has been burning through 1sts recently with no rewards either. They just got lucky with the Kessel trade and have been slowly whittling away those assets over the years.
I have a feeling we are going to get f***ed by the owners when the rebuild time comes. The pressure to make the playoffs every year is going to be there, everyone is going to be scared about the fans and the teams value.

I don’t see them betting on drafting the next Sid or a good prospect pool

This shit smells like Minnesota/Montreal middle teams vibes

*hans moleman voice* I was saying WAR

Okay, I disagree on that use of WAR

McCurdy's stance on him is that he's a good 3rd line player (regardless of what his joking retraction says). It seems like Jesse agrees with that. The charts in the Rodrigues vs Kapanen chart also suggests he's a solid player. I'm not seeing much that makes me think he's below a replacement level player, in the MLB context of a replacement level player.

We're in late-Carolina-days JR now.

it’s brilliant actually...he’s putting together a great tanking plan for two years from now...we’re going to be so bad, we’re going to get three first or second picks in the drafts again and pick our new Sid and Geno...all hail JR!...this is just the start...hopefully we’re going to trade Jake to reacquire Carter Rowney any day now and then Marino to get Gudbranson back and we’ll be all good...

The only thing this says is they think we can compete in the next 2 yrs and aren’t interested in picks that take time to dev. KK can plug right in and he does have speed.
But I dunno if I agree that the Sid Geno window is really open anymore....

Yeah, bringing up Boston is a good point to mention. They just traded basically the same return for Kase as what the Penguins gave up for Kapanen. Granted, the Bruins also got out of Backes' contract and Kase's underlying numbers were fantastic, so that's a positive too, but the Bruins paid a pretty similar price for a pretty similar player outside of the cap dump.

So excited to becoming Detroit for the remainder of my 30s.

At least tix will be cheap again. Perhaps COVID annual shots at the gate as a promo.

For me, it boils down to a 1st + Hållander for Kapanen.

Do I think that's too much? Yeah, probably.
Do I think it's the worst trade ever made? Probably not. Getting someone proven (albeit not a world beater) for two unknowns, I can see the reasoning even if I don't necessarily agree with it.

I'm not crazy high on Hållander, I think his skillset can be replaced with ease. Bottom-sixer with speed and tenacity. A nice guy to have, for sure, and someone I think can be a regular in the NHL. I think it's a good add for Toronto, and I would've liked to keep him, but not the end of the world.

The first round pick would be nice to have, of course. Odds are it will be someone as good or better as Kapanen. But I don't think it's the end of the world either. Hopefully Kapanen fits and keep on improving.

Interesting to see where this trade fits when the season starts, what else will have happened.

They also have few cap issues, are still playing inside the bubble and seem to have a clue.

So, not all is similar.

I'm not saying take anyone's word as gospel, but all indications are that Hallander was shaping into a prospect with a decent shot at becoming a middle sixer with the a combination of traits we prize in Hornqvist and Hagelin (forechecking, defense, play in dirty areas).

In fact, I haven't heard much to the contrary outside of Kingerski chiming in with a drive-by after the deal.

This is why I hate doing comparables. People take it and run with it to the most extreme circumstance. He's a player effective in front of the net that has the footspeed that takes him outside of being a typical power-forward. He's way faster than that. Not a speedster, but his forechecking ability is really good as a result of all the aforementioned stuff.

I just think he's a good prospect. I don't think Lindgren is at all. He's a 23 year old #4 in the AHL. Unremarkable at best. The Hallander part of this deal is most confusing to me.

Also the skating stuff is crap. I don't care who it came from. That's not reality.

Maybe, but to what extent? Like I said, a player that has those traits isn’t a middle sixer, they’re basically Gallagher.

Jesse can make the trait comparison but i think people here take those comparisons way too damn far. That might be what he is in his current league, it’s far from a given that it translates.

Not sure if this was mentioned, Lindgren is loaned to Modo of Allsvenskan (Sweden Tier-2) as of this August. Will be playing there till AHL starts up again, whenever that happens.

August 2020 – As teams figure out the best way to get their prospects ice time for the 2020-21 campaign, the Maple Leafs have loaned Lindgren to Modo of Allsvenskan (Sweden Tier-2). This was his pre-AHL team and a short drive from his home town in Sweden so this move makes sense on many levels. He should earn a top-four spot on the club’s back end to rack up some minutes as he prepares for AHL play in December.

that makes sense. I saw you tweet and thought you might be being dramatic. In general conversation (coming from baseball) replacement level is basically “a player i could randomly call/up or acquire” your standard AAAA too good for the minors but of no real value to the majors. Warsofsky’s and Garrett Wilsons are physical embodiments of these type of players even though its a mathematical concept.

This is the same thing Emp was saying too. I had no idea that's what it meant in baseball. It sounds like this is more of a WAA type thing in terms of how they relate based on what Emp said. Replacement level for me by that definition would be like.... Adam Johnson or something.

And the Penguins do have cap issues? Their biggest cap issue is having Jack Johnson on their bottom pair. Frankly, that might be their only cap issue. Boston doesn't have as bad of a JJ contract, but Moore's contract certainly isn't good.

*eye twitch*

If the Pens paid this for Kase instead of Kapanen I would feel very very different about it.

At the end of the day, the problem here is that the Penguins still view themselves as Stanley Cup contenders and refuse to face the reality of the situation. We are facing an uphill battle to make the playoffs because we play in the strongest division in the league and pretty much everyone is getting better.

AND, a fully healthy Penguins team could not win more than one game against the Montreal Canadiens.

But sure, let's keep thinking Crosby and Malkin are 22 and 23 years old, respectively. I was younger too back then. It is nice to think about.

But it sure as hell is not reality.

I wonder what's best for Lindgren next season. In Modo he will play top-4 and first PP, so a lot of minutes in a familiar surrounding. Will probably be great for his development.

On the other hand, he needs to play in NA to adapt. But will he beat out Maniscalco, Reilly and Trotman? You guys know better than me.

I'm excited to see what Lundgren can do in a Pens uniform.
