Why should JR give a shit about the future? Dude's gone by this time next summer whether we win the Cup or miss the playoffs/get swept in the 1st round.

Nothing matters to the old man anymore. He's just gonna have fun with it.

That’s what I’m getting at. Furthermore, his trades haven’t planned out since the team won back to back Cups in 2016 and 2017 (although, ‘17 had more to do with goaltending). It’s looking like JR is throwing shit at a wall and seeing what sticks.

He is on this team. Who does he play with? He needs a playmaking center and neither of our superstars mesh with him.

So, whatever line Hornqvist is on becomes the de facto fourth line.

Hornqvist just put up 14 ES goals with his most common line mates being Jared McCaan and Dominik Simon. Is that going to be lesser talent this year?

Remember how the powerhouse Detroit Red Wings kept selling the farm to make the playoffs and "contend" long after the jig was up and their core players were old and hurt all the time? And then how they crashed, burned, and went into purgatory for like half a decade, and are basically a total afterthought now?

Just thinking about that for some reason.
I disagree with this sentiment. The strategy to still go for it now is correct. Sid and Geno are still excellent. The problem isn’t the strategy it’s the execution. Turbo and Kap are good players, but did we pay too much? At least it isn’t 2 seconds for Dog Murray or the signing of Jack Johnson.

Kapanen has decent physical assets - his speed and a shot are both good. He's a strong transition player as well. But I think there's a lot to worry about with him. As a bottom six player he has very poor results, especially defensively. That worries me. I also don't see a good fit with Crosby based on my eye test and others'.

But the skills that Kap has are the kinds that will cause a stupid team to overpay for him. And that's what we did.
add to that he's not draft protected, and we will only get 3 years of a good contract. bad bad trade.

& the poster who said a Maple Laffs fan said KK likes the Peruvian Marching Powder! imagine that a Canadian Hockey Fan that talks shit on a Euro player ?? knock me over with a feather

Trade grades: In Kapanen deal, Rutherford 'putting all his cards on the table'

This is what you do when you have Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin in the stretch run of their careers. You try to maximize that window as long as possible. No issues here at all with Jim Rutherford trading the 2020 first-rounder, even if a 2021 first is already headed to Minnesota.

“He keeps putting all his cards on the table. Listen, you’ve got two of the best centers in the league,” said one NHL source on Tuesday. “And they’ll be able to move one of their goalies.”

The question is whether or not Kapanen is the right guy to use that first-round bullet on. In Kapanen, the Penguins are getting a second-line player who is still just 24 years old signed to a reasonable contract ($3.2 million AAV through 2021-22). One coach said he likes the fit, especially because he thinks Sidney Crosby is the kind of player who will be able to maximize Kapanen’s ability

“I think he’ll be good (in Pittsburgh),” the coach said. “A guy like Sid, he’s a good person to get (Kapanen) to understand, ‘You need to get these pucks.’ Sid wants to play with guys who can go get the puck and also finish. He’s the right personality for that.”

Since his draft year, there have been some questions as to whether or not Kapanen wants to put in the work to be a high-end player but the Penguins know him as well as any organization, considering they drafted him. They know what they’re getting here.

“I like Kasperi Kapenen enough,” said a scout. “In a perfect world, on a deep team, he’s a third-line guy but I look at him and what he’s able to bring — the straight lines, the north-south — this guy has good hands and skill. He also plays with that pace where defensemen — when a guy comes that fast down the wing, that puts pressure on them.”
Aberg has always had offensive potential but consistency is an issue and he’s most likely a KHL player for the immediate future.

Marino, Zucker and Pettersson are all good deals to me. Not trading Jarry after his training camp was smart. Maatta for Kahun was decent tho he kinda bungled that a little.

IF they think they can contend for the next few years then MAJOR moves need to be made to try and catch lightning in a bottle again. Shuffling the same type of players in and out to surround “the core” isn’t going to solve the issues both on offense and defense.

One of either Sid or Geno’s lines has to be stacked and virtually unstoppable night in and night out. Trying to “spread the wealth” around is only dragging each line down and making them weaker.

The D needs an overhaul, period.

I was just thinking that that is gonna be our third line next year. Everyone who is wondering who that magical 3C we are getting? Come on down Dom!

I am officially going back to my no-comparables stance of 2010. You have brought me to the light again.

I mean, to your end point, there are no givens in drafting. It's the most inexact science in the sport. Prospect development can go off the rails for any number of reasons. But all I can do is report on what I see.

In your opinion what is Hallander. I dont have a good grasp on it?

I know hes fast. I know he plays the type of way that endears himself to fans.

but isnt he really more solid bottom sixer than anything?

Comes in to see the reaction to today's deal . . .

I cant even stomach to go to the main boards. Im pretty convinced were getting laughed at. Im already fragile as it is, i dont think i can take it.

At the end of the day, trading the first is fine. We just traded it for the wrong guy.

The most generous thing you could say about Kapanen is that he's a good third liner who can maybe make the leap with Sid. That is an insane target to sell the farm for.

We paid more for Kapanen than we did for Zucker (a 30 goal 1st liner) or than the Bruins did for Kase (a guy with absolutely insane underlying numbers who's killing it in the playoffs).

It's the 15th overall pick! In a good draft! We could have done so much more with it and instead we settled for a zero calorie scorer bottom six winger coming off a crappy season

I think the title says all it needs too. You're putting " all your cards on the table " for a 3rd liner. Just bad asset management.

JR has publicly made 3 goals for the offseason.

1. Get younger
2. Get a defensive center
3. Trade a goalie

He got a 24 year old winger. Now he’s got 2 more items on the agenda.

I don’t remember if he said he wanted a dman or not.

Reminded you a few weeks ago about JR being OCD about guys he loves.

Only surprise with Kapanen is that a goalie swap wasn't a part of it.

P.S.: Just wait until JR pulls off the deal he tried to do two summers ago and trades Rust straight up for Domi . . .

(this is NOT an understanding, more an educated guess based on the GM being a lunatic)

It’s less the actual observation “Pens fans, the positives I glean from this guy where he is are what we see in guys like Hornqvist and Hags at the NHL level” that causes a lack of perspective than the short tweets that people here latch onto and think that they just traded Hornqvist, who was an elite net front guy for almost a decade, and a 1st for a third liner. Maybe Hallander is a really good NHLer in the future, but the logic doesn’t check out. If people are so confident that all the late round guys become gems, then they also can’t be too mad about losing the 1st rounder. Can’t really have it both ways.

The fact that a recent 2nd round prospect is showing Hags/Hornqvist-esque traits and developing well in a good pro Euro league is enough to question the wisdom of using him as a throw-in to a deal that really doesn't make much sense even if it we were only trading the 15th overall.

We got another burner who fell down Toronto's depth chart because he didn't have the hockey IQ to click with Matthews or Tavares, and he doesn't address the PP. That's what we used our most valuable disposable asset on, and then we threw in a solid prospect on top of that. That's the issue.

Rust for Domi will, in his mind, take care of #2.

Between #1 and #2, it makes me scared to think what he has in mind for #3 . . . coaxing Cam Ward out of retirement, perhaps?

I think we’re all to blame for this. We wanted fast wingers so bad and JR is going ham. Tanev? Zucker? Bring Sheary back? Kapanen? Ya’ll know JJ for Helm is next.

Am I completely wrong if I wouldn't hate that? :D
