For sure we do, but do you know how to acquire a Pastrnak? You draft one in the first round. OR, you make a very smart trade.

In other words, we are not acquiring a Pastrnak. Besides, this team does not want a scoring winger who can create for himself and light it up. They want every line to look the same, every player to play the same way. To play like our coach used to play.

And since our coach is Mike Sullivan, and not Mario Lemieux, we're screwed.

lol...exactly...that’s why his ass should have been fired before the assistant coaches...

I think we might look back at this and the JJ signing as JR finally losing the faith of the fans. This one did it for me, JR can retire now and f*** off until we are successful again because i don't like even looking at him in the mean time
I'm at a point where you might as well just dump Sid, Geno and tang too. If you're going to f*** this team and it's future, why keep these guys around. Watch him trade Jarry and Rust next.

I might just post in the steelers thread only at that point.

I'M DYING ALIVE WATCHING THIS HORSE SHIT.

The only way I see that this deal makes sense is if JR has some f***ing 4D chess strategy lined up to move Murray, Rust, and Hornqvist (not all in the same move, necessarily) to land a top-10 pick and stud 3C.

He doesn’t. If he does anything it will be another panic move that makes this one look worse. Dude is trading Rust for a 2nd.

I know Jesper personally, growing up in the same town as him, so I like him a lot and want the absolute best for him.

I do think his ceiling is a top defender in one of the top European leagues. I would be extremely surprised to see him play regularly in the NHL for a team that's not tanking. An apt comparison would be guys like Magnus Nygren (who, right?).

He's purely offensive, although he's become a lot better defensively since he left Modo in the Swedish Second Division. He's been loaned there to start this season , and the Pens can choose either to send him to the AHL or send him back to Modo (unless he by some miracle makes the NHL team).

When he was younger a lot of people compared his playing style to a young Erik Karlsson. That's the playing style - not the potential.

I don't mind the acquisition as such, he's a decent lottery ticket for a team that has few, but don't expect fireworks.

(I'm not super high on Hållander, but he is more likely to actually become useful on a NHL roster)

TBH, the Penguins need an offensive RH defenseman. Do you think him and Pettersson would make a decent bottom pairing?

Can’t say I’m thrilled with the news, but whatever. It helps the team next season, but I think the Pens overpaid fairly significantly.

I do wonder if this is any indication about the trade market surrounding Murray/Jarry...

that makes sense. I saw you tweet and thought you might be being dramatic. In general conversation (coming from baseball) replacement level is basically “a player i could randomly call/up or acquire” your standard AAAA too good for the minors but of no real value to the majors. Warsofsky’s and Garrett Wilsons are physical embodiments of these type of players even though its a mathematical concept.

Yeah, this was the problem I had too. It sounds like they were using WAR when they actually meant WAA, and I don't think there would have been any pushback had WAA been used instead.

First I gotta be fellow pens fans with wankers that wear sketchers and cargo pants and shorts, now this?

It's too early to drink.

Maybe, but we're talking a few years down the line. I think he 100% needs a full season in NA to adapt, unless you shelter him completely.

Why don't you list out all of the busts who fell in that range? All of the Kapanen/McCann caliber players who fell in that range?

Like I said, you would have had to have gotten lucky to get multiple players like that with those picks. For them to be good after Crosby and Malkin leave, they would have to get 2-3 hits on guys like Barzal, Boeser and McAvoy. They would have to be incredibly lucky to get that.

That's true, but it doesn't make it any less possible.

I just think at this point in the Crosby/Malkin-era, you need to stop considering drafting for the future or you'll have none.

Imo the Bruins (of which im using an example/compariosn of here) are not a middling team, they could make the cup finals two years in a row this year.
Yes and I don’t see how we can do the same. Honestly, how they did it is weird. Because everyone thought they were dead after the trades they’ve made.

I think trying to repeat it is just going to land us in that middle spot for years and you don’t want to be there wasting picks and prospects to try to make the playoffs every season

Yup. I didn't want to believe it was coming but Hurricanes fans warned us enough. It was a really good ride but oh man is it going to take some doing to get out from under this mess.
Yep.. Jack Johnson deal, Tanev deal, and now this gives me some serious pause.

Hopefully we get bounced in the playoffs yet again and can bring in a new GM.

TBH, Boston has been burning through 1sts recently with no rewards either. They just got lucky with the Kessel trade and have been slowly whittling away those assets over the years.

This is also probably part of a bigger picture as well. Murray, Johnson, Bjustad, McCann and maybe even Hornqvist etc. are all shoes that need to drop one way or another.

It was telling that when word of the trade happened, and this thread began, the reaction was universally not 'OMG, we got Kap back, great!'

The reaction was a universal 'OMG, what the hell did the senile old man give up now?'

That speaks volumes about the last three years.

It does. I mean, I SHOULD have seen it coming but I never thought they'd be dumb enough to trade our 1st rounder (after deciding to defer the first in 2021 to Minnesota) for a non-impact forward but here we are.
