I can't stand McCann, so I don't care what logic anyone uses to say this trade means he's gone... I just want him gone.

I probably can't be anymore transparent than that.
I think McCann may eventually hit another gear, but I don't think it'll be in this organization so I have no desire to keep him around. Particularly if he's gonna be a 3C.

Ideally, he could be used as a vehicle to remove JJ from the roster. I'm not sure he's got that much value, but one can hope.

We don't need a 15-20 goal RW, we literally already have 3 of them.

I agree, but obviously the Pens view Kapanen a little bit differently. And to be honest, Kappy does possess some skills we don't necessarily have in our top six. He plays a physical game and was has size compared to the other three forwards up there.

I don't like the trade at all. But, if you view it through the lens of we needed a top nine RW and wanted a RD prospect. It has some minor potential.

Yeah I'm trying to be positive because I like the player they got but this is what I keep coming back to.

Maybe they do some more housecleaning up front so this trade makes more sense? Because as of now it looks like a bunch of same-y players of questionable fit and actual help to the team's aging stars.

I can't wait until Kapanen is playing on the third line and Simon is on the first line.

There is zero reason to believe Hallander is a mix between Hornqvist and Hagelin, unless you’re talking about his name and ethnicity.

I’m fine with the trade if it spells the end of Sheary. An immediate upgrade. That being said, the prospect of not having a first round pick for the next two years with an aging core is worrisome. Unless, if Rutherford can acquire one via a Murray trade.

The problem of the backend is still a significant problem that needs to be addressed. That, and some much needed grit and size.

I am all about win as much as you can with your core and then TANK HAAARRRDDDDD lol. The worst case scenario is what i call the "Minnesota Wild Phenomenon" where you finish 8th in the conference and get the 17th pick every year.

I think its far more likely Kapanen is given to Malkin and Rust is either on L1 or L3.

Guentzel - Crosby - Simon
Zucker - Malkin - Kapanen
Tanev - Blueger - Rust

Would be what I'd hope they are setting the team up for.

Hopefully JR can take a GM on one of the benders he does before making a trade... then convince him McCann is good...

That's the only way I see him getting anything truly useful for the guy.

Moving him for anything I will consider a win, because it means they won't be locked into a bad contract with a ghost.

Let some other team buy the fool's gold.

If Kap is floated in and out of the top six for options like Simon and/or Sheary all year then this is even dumber, yeah.

If they REALLY think Kap is going to be a top six guy here then they need to stick with him there until he proves that confidence in him is absolutely not warranted.

Honestly this makes the Kahun trade even dumber, too. Unless I'm missing something?

Kap is a better player than Kahun but like... by how much? Seems like you just kinda shat a bunch of assets only to end up a half a foot further along than you started.

You're forgetting about all the value we got from Rodrigues, depth player extraordinaire!

nah, I think Sully will start:

Jake-Sid-Kapanen
Zucker -G-Rust

just because he’s stubborn and wants those lines to work even though we know L2 doesn’t really and then make some changes from there ...

Yeah, I just don't see where McCann fits in now that they've acquired Kapanen. To me, Kapanen is definitely going to be in their top-6, JR said as much according to Mirtle. They were already pressed for cap space and JR has specifically said he wants to acquire a 3C. So are they really going to pay McCann the kind of money he wants on an extension to only be a 3rd line LW? When they have Poulin knocking on the door as being NHL ready?

I just don't see how they can keep McCann. McCann's money was just given to Kapenen.

Tbf, they wanted Bjugstad to play top 6 RW and McCann to LW - and we also thought we were losing a forward last summer.

Also Kap can play PK, we know we've struggled there and now we have a legit offensive threat on there too. Just acquire Bennett and those 2 together would be deadly

Top 10 PK last year.

The odds that 15oa becomes as good or better than Kapanen is very small.

The chance that it happens and is actually helpful in our championship window is miniscule.

i dont know enough about Lindgren to know if him for Hallander makes sense. But i think everyone is overrating Hallander judging by the vitriol.

Nah. 50-50 on the player become as good or better, and most of those guys are in the NHL by D+2.

There is zero reason to believe Hallander is a mix between Hornqvist and Hagelin, unless you’re talking about his name and ethnicity.

I mean, Jesse does the hockey breakdown thing as a career and is about the most trusted source for that sort of thing among Pens commentators, and I'm willing to bet he's seen Hallander more than the overwhelming majority of those here.

Pretty good reasons to give some weight to his opinion on a prospect.

I think the value is pretty close. A 1st for a young, proven, talented, well rounded player who's on a decent contract and a RFA at the end of it isn't bad. On one hand, it's giving away the potential to get a cheap, difference maker a few years from now. On the other, it's an immediate more sure thing. Value-wise, it evens out IMO.

Hallander for Lindgren is a complete unknown to me. Seems like the Leafs got the better of it, but only time will tell.

The rest of it is inconsequential.

My problem with it is whether Kapanen is the type of player they should be targeting. I would have rather added more to get a Nylander or Rakell or someone like that. Basically like they did to get Kessel at the time. I like Kapanen, but he's just more of the same. A definite upgrade on Simon/Sheary/etc., but I think they could use a real difference maker instead of another solid piece.

Hopefully JR got a secret IOU and will cash that in to dump JJ in a 3-way trade involving Murray and Anderson.

Zucker - G - Rust didn't even last three games in the playoffs.
