I've tried a hundred different ways to say this and ultimately deleted every single one of them before posting. So for the 101st time...he goes nothing. First, my hope is that Faulk gets well soon. I don't want anyone (even a Matt Cooke or a Tom Wilson) get injured at anytime much less the playoffs.
Now, I only know Kadri from watching him as an Av. I'm aware of his past, but I try not to really follow teams who haven't done a damn thing in over 50 years. I mean, you celebrate a 100years but only the first 50 were worth a damn. Anyways...I'm not big on the big 25 covering center ice at the [insert corporate sponsor] arena either.
As for folks calling for his head, this hit isn't the reason I'd be doing it. It is a one-off in his two years with the Avs. This individual play is not indicative of his body of work as an Av and is in fact an outlier. One he probably deserves 5+ games for, but then anybody that throws that particular hit, should be looking at at 2-3 minimum for a first time incident in my book even during the playoffs. I don't think the there should be any difference in how the rule book is called or how suspensions work between the regular season and the playoffs. That's why no sane person will ever get the job. Neither the NHL nor the NHLPA want the problem fixed. First for the NHL, it would make Gary feel like he's admitting a mistake by changing things...even if that is what is required to make the game better/safer. He's not about to make a change that could show any hint that he's doing something that should have happened a long time ago while he's still got lawsuits going on from players over head injuries. As for the NHLPA, sure the rank and file players might say that's the kinda hit we need out of the game...but the NHLPA (as is right for any union) is going to go to bat for the player being issued supplemental damage even though it sends a signal that the players union is okay with this and is actually defending Kadri's hit. It's indefensible. I don't remember which article it was in, but Bednar even said from some angles you can kinda give him the benefit of the doubt on, but from other angles it's just a tough look. When you own coach says something like this, that's code for he's my player and I want to defend him, but I can't...this hit was inexcusable. At least, that's my take.
So what kind of player is Kadri now? I've tried to find "hit" stats but they don't appear on the NHL website. What I'm trying to do is find a way to determine how physical/mean a player might be. My immediate other thought was PIMs. Yeah PIMs will tell me who the big bad guys are on our team: well shit....Graves leads the way with 55 minutes. Somehow O'Brien sneaks in at #2 with 40 minutes in the box. Kadri apears number 4th on the list behind MacK's 37 minutes worth of coffee breaks at 34 of his own. Which tied him with Rants and Landy.
Welp, I guess PIMs might be a substitute for tough/mean if your name is O'Brien, otherwise it almost appears to be indicative of TOI.
So now I'm stuck with my eye test and I might need a new prescription. I question Kadri's motor. I don't think he has one. I have yet to see him exert any will on a game, heck I have had a very hard time this season even seeing Kadri on the ice. That's a good thing for a defensemen, I'm not so sure about it being a good thing for your 2nd line center though.
One last thing I've looked at is probably one of the worst stats being kept. Yep...the dreaded +/-. These stats fluctuate a lot but Kadri really does stand out by how far back of the pack he is. He has a team worst -7. Of our centers, MacKinnon lead, of course, with +22. The others in order: Jost (+14), Landeskog, wink-wink, (+14), Compher (+10) and Belly (+6). I mean Newhook (small sample size) ended with +5. It's a terrible stat, but what makes one player (who is part of the top six) fall so far behind others.
Anyways, as for the hit itself. I would not call Kadri a mean player, much less a tough player or a player that actually uses physicality as a tool. I honestly don't think he even knows what was going through his head on that play. Considering what he was touted as, I expected a tiger. He's really just your ordinary, maybe slightly below average 2C. His 32 points weren't much to write home about either. His loss for the rest of this series isn't a huge deal with home ice and a two game lead. It should give Bednar some time to play with all his toys and get his shit sorted out for the 2nd round. Assuming he gets 4+ games I have no issue (I would if it were less, because I actually want that kind of hit out). Me having no issue with that does not mean I am cool with the DoPS. A blind squirrel and all that.
