I'd be concerned, but i'm not.
What the f*** have Mika and Kreider done at ES this season? I'm FAR more concerned with their play at ES. The whole line has been pretty bad at ES but when i'm looking to blame players, I'll go to the "leaders" first. Seems like they at just content at floating around at ES and waiting for the PP to come around to pad their stats.
Kreider - 2 ES goals (one tonight)
Kakko - 1 ES goal
Mika - 1 ES goal
Kreider got a goal because there was actually a shot for once from the blueline, from a set play to boot. Kreider's goal has nothing to do with the play of that line. It's easy, and lazy, to point to Kakko as the issue with that line but there are several more.
What we are seeing with Kreider and Mika floating around looking pretty ES with Kakko toiling in desperation and with zero traction is
exactly to the point of what I warned against at the start of the season.
Mutual support on that line is basically non-existent. Kakko's game is to be a facilitator. If you follow soccer he's a midfield player moving the ball keeping possession. The issue is he has basically nobody to play this game with. Mika, Fil, Trocheck are the C and none of them are any use as playmakers. The D overall suck at anything involving the puck (Fox apart obviously, Gus is hit and miss). Even if the team gets a cycle going the cycle dies on the sticks of the D. Kreider's possession game is rudimentary at best. Mika's been a giant sucking ES void to start the season.
You can see why the team defaults to keeping the score even ES and go for the win with the special teams. In this scenario playing a Lavi style solid defensive game is much smarter than Gallant's approach.
Kakko and Laf, even the improved skating faffing around Laf, are without identity on this team. That is not entirely their own fault. The major issue is that both look like shells of the players they could be, and there is no easy fix.
From their individual pov it would probably be better for both to move to teams that suit their style better, but that is easier said than done.
