Just a week ago, you were worried we just sign McKeown and Maenalanen and be ready for the season. You doubted the GMBC. Have you learned your lesson?

I wasn't "worried", but I really didn't expect anything more at the time for sure. You are right that I shouldn't be surprised by anything any more.

We could be loading up to make a big trade *this* summer. What if all the machinations are to make a serious run at Laine or Marner?

That would surprise me, even if it shouldn't.

Or, potentially, the Borg shocks the league and nabs Kyle Connor instead of Laine because they value analytics over handedness and no one's been focusing on him.

I think nobody is focusing on Connor because the Jets seem to be saying they aren't letting him go, even if it costs them Laine. Plus, although Laine hasn't burned any bridges in Winnipeg as of yet, he's certainly drenching them in gasoline.

Honestly, I just love the fact that the Canes have been by far the most active non-July 1st team this off-season. The only time that they have been silent (outside of Mrazek's re-signing) has been when the rest of the league blew their cap, partially leading to the RFA stalemate. The other times, it's been all Carolina picking up picks, acquiring cap dumps, and signing UFAs when the market's bottom fell out.

The Canes were hardly silent during that timeframe. In fact, I would say they were in the news more than any other NHL from July 1st - 7th.

Canes Will Match Offer Sheet for Aho

Right, but not a ton. There are still 15 teams to which he can be traded *without* an extension, so he can't push too hard. And with today's news that he's insisting on an extension, he's basically played all his cards. He has no issue with Anaheim if he's willing to sign an extension there, so he can ask nicely for an extension, but if he doesn't get it and rejects the trade, he's going somewhere else without an extension. One thing I know for sure, he won't be back.

Well, the leverage he does have is that the Canes chose a no-trade-15 team as their preference, and obviously that's because they value that return more highly than anything on offer from the trade-ok-15 teams. And of course ANA still has to want to do the extension, but if they're willing to part with a skilled young player to do it, they probably don't intend to do that as a pure rental.

So no, it's not a lot of leverage, but it's the only leverage he's going to get in this situation, and he should make the most of it.

After everything that's happened, I'm starting to wonder if it was by force, or part of the plan all along. :naughty:
If there was some master plan of lets just wait for someone offer sheet our star player and we will mach it no matter what, but we will be in the front pages of hockey media for a few weeks. That would be like 500 IQ big brain activities by whoever the mastermind was.

I don't think that there was some grand master plan, but I do think that the offer sheet was a consequence of the early ultra-lowballing that the Canes were pulling to the Aho camp. As a reactionary move, the Aho group decided to accept an early offer sheet to end the nonsense, but was at such a friendly AAV that it was the easiest match of all-time.

If Faulk's strategic about team selection, and Anaheim being on his list is perhaps evidence of that, his partial NTC is effectively a full NTC. There aren't 16 teams in the league that have the cap space and need at RD to acquire him. Block trades to the teams that want you and allow trades to teams that don't, and he does have the leverage.

I don't think there was a master plan either. I do find a couple things interesting though.

1) Waddell went out of his way 3 different times before 7/1 saying the Canes would match any offersheet, so they at least suspected one might be coming as they made a point to mention it multiple times.
2) Dundon in his negotiations with Waddell basically told him to go out and get an "offersheet" (in this case the interview with the Wild) before signing him to a contract.

It's almost an attitude of "this is what we're offering, if you think you deserve more, go find out and come back to me."

Ok, tin foil hat off and please get the season started.

Something I always wondered, is when to these guys have to submit their teams? And do they get to change the list year after year? Do they only submit it when the team requests it? etc....

Has very good offensive instincts and great puck skills and vision. He loves having the puck on his blade because he excels as a playmaker (but can also score a lot of goals himself). Lacks ideal size for the National Hockey League game, so he must adapt to smaller rinks and greater physicality around him. Needs to get much stronger to better avoid injuries

Yeah, I'd be surprised if they didn't have it on file for Faulk at some point well before now given they had tried to move him before. If he has to submit it July 1 for instance, some of that strategy may have been less possible.

Crap, that's right. Another Czech. Do Finns and Czechs get along?

HISTORICALLY WE HAVE COMMON AVERSION TOWARDS RUSSIANS AND AFFINITY TO LIQUOR.

IN TERMS OF HOCKEY WE HAVE MUCH BIGGER GRUDGES AGAINST

A) RUSSIA

BECAUSE OF HISTORY, THEY ARE OFTEN A^SHOLES, HISTORY AND HISTORY,

I CAN ACTUALLY ELABORATE ON THAT IF @DaveG gives me a permission. Thing is that it’s combination of hockey, but also history and politics which is kind of against CoC. I can try to give as unbiased view as possible.

B) CANADA

BECAUSE THEY ARE COCKY GATEKEEPERS AND THEY HAD TENDENCY TO PLAY LIKE LUMBERJACKS.

C)

SIMILAR TO CANADA, BUT TO LESSER EXTENT. ALSO NO ONE CHEERS FOR SUPERPOWERS. IT’S LAME.

...

OUR ONLY HOCKEY GRUDGE AGAINST FINLAND WAS INJURY OF OUR GOD 68 BY J. RUUTU.

THERE IS ALSO MAJOR IN TENDENCY IN CZECH REPUBLIC TO CHEER FOR FELLOW SMALLER STATES. AND UNLIKE SWITZERLAND, FINLAND ACTUALLY PLAYS HOCKEY THAT IS PLEASURE TO WATCH.

Deriving an answer from Exhibit 16 Key Issues 37, the timing of submitting the list appears to be negotiated. Some clubs want it at a specified time. Others ask for it on demand, when a trade is potentially imminent.

To the question of changes, I can't find anything. A fresh NTC list every league year seems like the logical thing.
