What is to stop the black king from moving to H8? There is no attack from the 7th or 8th rank, the black pawn in F6 stops an angle attack to H8. There would have to be an unblocked white rook in the H file for it be a checkmate (rare). Then the checkmate move by the white Queen would usually be H6 to H8. If there was a white rook in the H file, black could have prevented the checkmate by moving his rook from F8 to F7 on his previous move.

No big deal. Just lookin' ... just sayin' ...

Hold who and what accountable for what? What are we talking about? We won't know which player was the best selection until 3 to 4 years from now. Let's all take a deep breathe and relax.

I wanted Slaf since March and I stand by Slaf. Will he put up the most points? I don't really care. However I believe he will have the most positive impact for his team to win the cup out of ALL those players taken after him.

I was never the biggest Slaf fan, but I like what I’ve seen in preseason. He’s still gotta find consistency, and he’s still gotta grow into his body and develop his man strength, but once he does he should be a legit top 6 winger with unicorn size at least. I think a Blake Wheeler type career is in his wheelhouse as well.

There isn't any other way for FANS to hold the team accountable than to hold, via the media, their statements and results up to their face. If you have a better idea, I'm all ears.

Yes, sure. We're talking hockey online nothing we say is groundbreaking. If that's the standard of conversation you expect, you're in for a headache.

We'll get nowhere if there are fans who'd rather attack other fans for guessing the pick wrong instead of criticising the GM who chose the wrong damn pick.
No one is attacking you......................it is far too soon to make all of these statements from your perspective....This, is what we are trying to say.
Give this kid some time............man you are losing your mind on Slaf/Hughes/Gorton.

They all just started to do, what they were hired to do............let's come down off the ledge and chat eh....at this point, we will not know it's the wrong pick, and we may not know for a couple of more seasons.....stay tuned, we know you will.

Yes — if they got it wrong, they’re 100% to blame. Not another fan who thought another prospect seemed better.

How sad is it that some fans and commentators have a better hit rate% than the Head Scout of the Montreal Canadiens?

How long has the head scout been in that position and with this Sr leadership group?
Pretty hard to claim others have a better track record when the final results are years from being able to be judged lol.

It's also not an exact science and NO team is perfect and EVERY team has missed big time letting players go by that others teams drafted n turned out better.

If it's a blame game then every scout, GM, decision maker should be fired immediately cause they all.missed. on multi draft selections. Esp after 2 years when ya can't judge anything yet lol.

Slaf is a longterm project and always was.

You hope he become a decent top 6 forward otherwise a nice complementary top 9 player on a contender. Not worth a 1st overall? Probably... that being he can be still useful on a team.

The hope isn't that he becomes a decent top 6 forward. Its that he becomes a top line player.

That is wishful thinking. The draft was not that great, I would be surprised if we see more than 3 top line forward in that year draft.

So you think there could be 3 top-line forwards, but you don't think the forward drafted 1st overall has the potential of becoming that?

Top-9 on an average NHL team is what Slaf is today. I certainly hope that’s just his floor. You expect much more drafting first even in a very bad draft year.

Slaf would not be in the NHL at all with many teams.

Let's hope something clicks in his brain and things suddenly come together.

Hope he proves us wrong this season, but for someone who’s 6’3 230 lbs, he seems pretty soft on the ice
Do you expect a 19 year old who’s learning NA hockey, positioning, to hit everything and be physical on top of those things?

He’ll grow into his body. A 6’4 230lbs kid is still a kid, a teenager. He doesn’t have his man’s strength yet.

We’ll see new things adding up to his game and difference physically every year from now to him at 23-24 years old.

Sorry, had to dig this a bit because I play chess everyday and I could not understand how you could deduce so much from a position shown so quickly without even showing the whole board.

It's from independance day and there was a rook on the h file shown a moment before the above gif. Chessbase were even able to record the full checkmate sequence : Independence Day. Black could not anticipate and play RF7 before, because there was a check. You are right though that the blunder that leads to the checkmate is a bit hard to believe, but the characters were talking and one was not focused enough.

Thinking Independence Day.

He might very well be the best, but I want more goal variety from Cooley before I get really bullish like the guys on the main board. Highlight reel individual effort goals are not sustainable. I want to see one timers and goals from the slot. I want to see how he handles NHL play with an uncommon physical frame for an NHL Center.

NHL centers are the smallest of all positions.

Center<Winger<Dmen<Goalie

The average centerman is less than 6'1.

There's like over 100 centermen who are 6 feet or less.
