Where would you prefer Slaf spend his 23-24 season?

I’m rooting for Slaf, but he hasn’t proven anything. That’s OK. The other 2022s haven’t either. Maybe this season one will break out. Cooley has the most momentum, still I want to see him as a 5’10 NHL Center without Bedard superhero skills for half a season before I get a fair read on him. Wright never challenges for loose pucks physically. It incapacitates him, and he won’t be able to use his higher end skills if he doesn’t. I’m not bullish about him.
Honest question. Why does Cooley have the momentum. I haven't been watching him as closely as slaf obviously. All I've seen is his highlight goal. What momentum does he have? Impressive if his momentum is better than Slaf given Slafs play this preseason.

Cooley is a better skater right now. That may change as Slafkovsky grows into his body. As has often been noted, player development is an inexact science and is definitely not linear. If Slafkovsky attains his projected peak, he will prove to be best of his draft class. And with his combination of size, mobility and skill, it won’t be close.

I had all three ahead of Slaf but I can't remember if I had Jiricek ahead of Slaf as well.

I was on the Wright train from day one as I spent time around him when he was with Don Mills and just believed in his talent and still do but he seems to have become more socially awkward as he got older. He is a good kid and I am confident he will be a good NHLer but if I had interviewed him at 18 as HuGo did I likely would have went with Nemec who I had as a close second. In the mock draft I took Cooley 2nd OA but switched to Nemec afterwards.

Given the access to interviews I likely would have come away from the last two 1st rounds with Nemec, Kulich and Dvorsky......time will tell how that stacks up against Slaf, Mesar and Reinbacher. Interesting that I still would have taken two Slovaks lol
I think I had Jiricek higher too but it's not like I have any real draft insight. With Cooley I kept thinking Clayton Keller who I'd wanted at one pint

I remember people being cooled of Cooley because 1) they were not sure his flashy offensive would translate in the NHL and 2) of the "big three" (him, Slaf and Wright), Cooley looked shy and it wasn't clear how well he would deal with the Montreal pressure, compared to the other two who felt more natural in this "role".

Its a marathon not a sprint. Progression will not be at the same speed and while Cooley may develop much faster in the next 2 years it does not mean he will be better in 5 years. Similarly if he is better in 5 years it does not mean he would have been better for us in 5 years. Slaf will be fine, the game of could have, should have, migth have is over now.. get over it everyone.

He has 5 points in 5 games in preseason including 2 highlight. Hes been amazing. Hes even laid out Zegras with a center ice hit.

Which is exactly what they said, when they drafted him.

My bold (and optimistic l) prediction is that Slaf not only scores on opening night, but also has a hot start and gets a few goals in the first 2-3 games. Just something about how he was playing pre season.

I think he comes back to earth but ends up having a solid season overall, but I am predicting a hot start. Let's see

Try to find the last time Bob's #1 didn't go 1. Seriously, try to do it.

It means a lot, it means that whoever finishes there is seen as the best player in the draft by NHL scouts.
I think it was 02 or 03? Bobs poll has been insanely accurate for predicting the #1 pick. When his lost came out I remember mentioning to my friend who likes to gamble that Slafkovsky was #1 on Mackenzie list but still had amazing odds since Wright was still the massive betting favorite. I said "look , this year is different but there's a poll that has accurately predicted the #1 pick for 20 straight years and currently their #1 has some amazing odds, if there was a time to bet on the #1 pick this would be it "

Turns out the gospel was right, again, however my buddy did not wager anything on it

He might very well be the best, but I want more goal variety from Cooley before I get really bullish like the guys on the main board. Highlight reel individual effort goals are not sustainable. I want to see one timers and goals from the slot. I want to see how he handles NHL play with an uncommon physical frame for an NHL Center.

SO, he's bow-legged, especially compared to Guhle, who still needs to develop his legs. Over-analysis, here we come!

The plural for parenthesis is parentheses.

Were you saying the same thing about Caufield?

There was a group of people who did want Cooley. Myself included. There’s no pretending involved. When all the questions came up about Wright, taking the next best center seemed logical. You also couldn’t go wrong with Nemec. There was no obvious choice but both those players potentially filled big needs in the organization. Wingers are a dime a dozen and can be sorted in time. It was obvious what was going to happen when Slafkovsky was ranked at the top of Bob’s list. Clearly a lot of scouts saw something fans like myself still to this day haven’t seen. I just hope it wasn’t mainly based on tournaments where anomalies happen all the time.
Yeah there were definitely people who wanted Cooley, but it was a minority. I would have even been fine with it. But now EVERYONE is acting like he was the obvious pick which just wasn't the case.

I wanted Nemec, for two specific reasons. (no good forward, top pair defenseman are very valuable)

If you are not sold that Wright can become a top 2 center in the NHL, then a right handed top pair defenseman is the next most valuable option.

I will be honest, I had doubt about Cooley because of his size down the middle, although I would have been totally fine if we had gone for him.
