But the bigger issue is the point you're trying to make off of this - that just a little extra cap space could be the difference between a cup and no cup. Its hogwash.

The real issue is that the Rangers are running out of young players capable of filling depth roles for cheap. I'd rather focus on that than penny pinching a guy that will be a top 5 Ranger all-time when its said and done.

Its all about giving the team a better chance. Having that extra space now will allow us to fill a glaring hole of a 3rd line forward. I'm willing to give Miller a chance either on the wing or at center next season. Team still needs one forward.

Guys like Santorelli and Goc went for cheap.

Legwand and even Olli Jokinen (I know nobody here likes him and I don't either, really) went for 3M or less and would fill the 3rd line center void. That 1.5 could be put towards guys like that.

It expands our options. To me thats very key. We are up against the cap as bad as any team in the league, so having any wiggle room helps.

And for a team that just got to the final, yes adding or replacing one depth piece could very well be the difference.

You know where you get that extra $1.5m? You don't sign Tanner Glass. You don't take it away from your superstar goalie. You make smarter decisions elsewhere in the lineup.

You sign your RFA's with limited leverage to bridge deals, as Sather has done time and time again. You don't overpay UFAs you don't think fit your system anymore, as Sather has done.

You don't look at your top player's contract and say: "damn, wish we could hedge a few million off off that to save some space".

Think paying Hank $8.5 AAV is one of the least things we have as fans to complain about the Rangers for. But that's me. To each their own.

Tanner Glass is the problem?

The real problem is paying Zuccarello $4M to be a 3rd line right winger. How many teams have a $4M player on their 3rd line? The Rangers have Nash at $7.8M and St.Louis at $5.625M.

People complain about the Rangers not having a 2nd line center. The Rangers are paying that player and paying Brassard $4M to be the 3rd line center? That's why Richards isn't here anymore. That and the recapture.

Zuccarello was at $1.15M and Brassard had a $3.2M cap hit. His salary was $3.7M. Both of them are one year away from group III. They will get paid.

The cap is $69M.

Okay.

Still better than giving Callahan a 6x6 and with a rising cap, 4mil for a RW who could be a #1RW, is pretty damn good. MSL is only around another year, and even if they did sign him to another 1-2 year deal it will be for less than what he gets now.

Tanner Glass is just a waste of money. Rick Nash is overpaid but there's nothing they can do about that. Henrik commands his salary because he is this team and has earned it.

There are reasons why the Rangers are having cap issues, but the only one that is a problem right now is Tanner Glass. The others are understandable and justified.

Zuccarello lead the team in points. He was arguably our best forward in a season where we finished 2nd in the division after a lousy start and got to the Final.

I don't see how Zuccarello is a problem.

how much were you looking to spend for the team's fourth line left winger, and what kind of player (better than Glass) were you looking to get, and who is that player? I'm not here trying to defend Glass. Let's say he was a mistake, but the Rangers would have paid, what, $1MM for a fourth liner who isn't much better than Glass? So it's a $1.45MM mistake, which, from what I gather regarding postings about his contract is not a problem that has to stick around for three seasons. Sather did a great job constructing last season's team. It was a couple years in the making and he got great value out of several players, some of which are now too expensive to continue to afford. What he didn't do a good job of is lining up players who are of similar talents that don't have contracts expiring this season and who are on the upswing, or he does and like these guys, we just don't know who they are yet.

Literally anyone else.

Ryan Bourque from Hartford would probably be better, maybe any LW from Hartford. Any forward from Hartford?

Any FA who got paid less than Tanner Ass?

Downie?

Lastly, why did it have to be 3 years? 1 year at 1.5 mil and it's still stupid, but not quite as stupid.

That's the part that gets me. If it's that or 2 years at $1 million or whatever it's still baffling but not quite as bad but that? How the hell did they get to 3 years at 1.45? Did they get into a bidding war or something for him? I just don't get it.

$1mil for 1 yr. Heatley signs with Ducks.

*contracts I'd rather have over Tanner Glass'*

Not saying this specific to Dany Heatley or to Tanner Glass but people need to realize that fourth line guys are sometimes going to earn more than guys in a scoring role who are hanging on by a thread.

Did you stop and think that he didn't want to sign with the RANGERS?

Never said that he did.

Oh absolutely. I just prefer that those 4th line guys that get paid are actually good hockey players. Heatley's pretty much done anyway but it's just amazing to see how little some of the remaining free agents are getting. Amazing what happens when you wait it out in free agency!

He doesn't kill penalties and you wouldn't want him on your 4th line

Glass is an abysmal PK:er and I don't want him on my 4th line.

Look, Glass has been worse than an average AHL callup over the past few seasons. There is no rationale for this contract at all.

I'd rather have Mashinter, and I really don't want Mashinter.

I believe you guys he sucks, but how has he stuck in the NHL consistently for five seasons? Saying AHL call-ups are better is harsh for a guy with more than 400 NHL games to his credit (including nearly 40 playoff games). And his PK may suck, but he did play a lot of PK minutes in PITT. Was PITT that dumb, or did they lack people to play the PK, and why didn't they just call-up an AHLer to perform these duties? I haven't seen Glass. I haven't given an opinion on him. I just wonder how a guy who's so bad has stuck in the league this long and was just making $1MM. Are the Rangers taking a flyer on the guy they think will pan-out under AV, and if he doesn't is his contract such that he won't be a 3-year burden?

They why is he playing on the rangers fourth line and not you?

Glass kills penalties, yeah. Horribly.

PITT wasn't a bad penalty killing team (on par with the Rangers), and I wouldn't put their goaltending up there with Hank. Glass did kill penalties for the Pens last season. Looks like he took a couple shifts on the PK per game the last couple seasons (more last season than the prior season). Not the main forward, but he was a forward. Was he really that bad? Again, can't say I recall seeing him killing penalties, so I really don't know. This is all anecdotal and going purely off stats.

Gonna pump this list of names again. Not because I think they're a better option than Miller (some I do); but mostly because they are unsigned, might come cheap, and more than anything else we need BODIES to compete with Miller and Lindberg. They can't just go into camp thinking it's their's for the taking. More bodies is not a bad thing. Especially when some of these guys can come in on PTOs.

Ott
Miele
Schroeder
Loktionov
Peter Mueller (and Chris, for that matter)

Plus Miller and Lindberg, that's 7 guys competing for two spots assuming we don't fill 3LW via Free Agency. Eight if you include Fast. At the worst, getting Miele and Schroeder into our system wouldn't be a bad thing, either.

Kreider - Stepan - Nash
Loktionov/Fast - Brassard - Zuccarello
Hagelin - Schroeder/Miller - MSL
Glass - Moore - Bourque/Carcillo/Fast
Bourque/Carcillo

Bolded my top choice (on paper) for each.

Loktionov has some size, but he hasn't proven much at the NHL level. I'd prefer to have a big body to play with Brass and Zuccs, but, obviously, the problem is finding someone available.

Miele was signed by the Wings. Schroeder has upside, but he's also quite small at 5'8."

Gotta say I'm extremely surprised Sather didn't go for that with Heater. Good.
