The Rangers have an issue with dollars. It shouldn't be a surprise. The cap is going to $71M. It didn't go to $71M. $69M. The Rangers have 4 group 2s to sign. Brassard and Zuccarello are arbitration eligible and are one year away from group III. Kreider is arbitration eligible. Moore will get a 2 year bridge deal. How much for all 4? $8M-$9M for Brassard and Zuccarello combined. $2.5M for Kreider. 2 year bridge. $1.5M for Moore. $12M-$13M. Add JT Miller. 18 players. 10 forwards. 6 D. 2 G. In 2011,the Rangers wanted to sign Callahan to a longer deal than 3 years but they didn't have that space. A huge chunk of the Rangers remaining dollars will go towards those 4 players. Brassard and Zuccarello sign 3 year deal instead of 4 or 5 year deals. $4M-$4.5M per. A 3 year contract includes 2 group III years. Maybe 1 of them signs a 4 year deal like Dubinsky did. The arbitration deadline is July 5. The Rangers need to sign those players. Add 2 more forwards. Add a 13th forward and 7th D. Leave space to run the team during the season. Its not about Zuccarello or Brassard taking less, its about the Rangers not having the space to give them more than 3 years.

People complain too much about the Rangers not keeping their other players and not replacing Richards with another center. How are they paying them?

The NMC could have been a critical issue for Stralman.

He said security first in interviews, and it was especially pointed out in Swedish Media that he got a NMC from Tampa. He was also disappointed he couldn't stay in NY, he said that we "preferred" someone else.

What do I know, but from my horizon I wouldn't have liked to lock up a top 4 for 4-5 years with as little offense as McD-G and Staal-Stralsy. I would have matched Tampas offer save for the NMC because Stralsy could always have been traded. But with a 5 year NMC? I don't fear the play of Stralman in 5 years, but the team as a whole could need adjusting...

This is a well-thought out post. Cheers, Ola.

I love how people are trying to minimize the loss of Stralman, if he signs that contract with the Rangers we would all be doing backflips on what a great deal that was to keep him. He may not be a 15 goal guy/pp QB type of player, but he was a slick passing defenseman who was able to make great little plays to get to puck forward and as good one on one as anyone in the NHL. Brian Boyle leaving is not an issue, but when you replace Stralman wit a 38 year old defenseman on his way out of the NHL soon you are looking for problems.

One thing you're not considering is that we wouldn't have signed either for those deals.

The state income tax and cost of living inflates what an equivalent salary would be in NY.

The league really needs to figure out a way to balance that playing field.

Also, don't minimize the loss of Boyle. He was a huge part of this team.

After sleeping on this, all the players we lost were replaceable. You don't sustain winning by signing your 3rd and 4th line guys and bottom 3 defensemen to long-term contracts unless the AAV is considerably less than it was.

We found Boyle, Stralman, and Pouliot on the scrap heap and surrounded them with talent. We just have to go out there and find their replacements in a similar fashion.

Boyle and Pouliot are a dime a dozen players, easier to replace, actually think their exit leads to opportunities, Stralman is a different story and I think will be an ongoing issue for us especially at his age and injuries he sustained this passed season. I understand the tax and cost of living savings by going to Florida and know the Rangers would have to pay more to keep him here, but he will be missed.

Yeah, he will be. He was steady as all hell. I'm happy for him and his family.

I'll never forget this.

We lost Richards, Stralman, Pouliot, Boyle and Dorsett.

What did we get...a fighter who can't skate.

Anything else? Nope.

Will we compete for the cup next season? Nope.

D. Boyle took less to play for the Rangers. He's not the player he was when he was 29, but he's a solid replacement for Stralman that has things about him that are better (PP, passing, leadership) and things that are worse (speed, physicality (this part of Stralman's game really improved over his NYR years) and stick on puck). Overall, the change won't hurt the Rangers all that much and a 2 year deal > 5 year NMC deal (that the Rangers clearly weren't willing to make).

Sather obviously is changing his philosophy on NMC/NTC as these were key issues with Callahan and, now, Stralman. These might be necessary to secure marquee players, but role players (and that's not a knock on Callahan and Stralman) shouldn't be able to tie your hands down the road. Look at St. Loius, Spezza, etc... dictating where they will and won't go and how that affects your ability to negotiate. I give Sather credit for standing his ground on this issue and not tying his hands in the future.

Honestly, there wasn't much out there at reasonable price that could've helped the Rangers all that much. Best value contracts out there were probably Erhoff and B. Boyle (who, again, was trying to dictate what his role was going to be which is something you can't have for a 3rd/4th line player) and that's about it.

Get the RFA's signed, maybe sign a value guy that's still around today or tomorrow, and hopefully one of Fast, Lindberg, Haggerty, etc... stick on the big club. I think the NYR are planning on Miller being a regular next season.

Ranger fans need to look for more than passing ability in a player they are moaning about resigning.

1g and 13a with no ability to run a PP is not lock up material...

While searching for Stralman videos, see if you can find game 2 against LA where Stralman
watches the puck trickle past him while he lying in the crease...

Team needs goal scoring talent not one dimensional defenseman.

We picked up a PP specialist.... where were u?

We're playing kids next season.

Everyone should be happy.

I think it's important to replace the big body who will go to the net for Brassard and Zuccarello.

I'm sure if this is the right thread to post this in But oh well.

I think the Rangers and Toronto can get a big deal done if they have the balls.

Rangers trade, Nash (possibly retain some money) Brass, Staal, throw in prospect or pick and get

Kadri, JVR, Gardnier.

I know Gardnier is obviously not close to staal but he has the potential, And JVR And Kadri would do great under AV.

Deals like this are complete fantasy.

HF is always the place where everyone clamors for kids, and a concerted youth movement. Now we find ourselves in a situation where we're going to have a few kids assuming large responsibilities, and we're complaining. Go figure.

Anyway, losing Stralman sucks, but fortunately we're still good on the back end with some prospects in the wings. Dan Boyle will help as well.

Losing Richards might hurt the most. He's obviously well past his prime, but it will be tough to make up for his production.

Not worried about losing Boyle and Pouliot. Both were expected, and we can replace them.

Bolded = no matter what. :)

If this was last offseason, I would be thrilled. However after going to the finals, losing 4 good to great roster players and replacing them with plugs and kids doesn't sound like a recipe for repeat "success."

Right now I am pretty displeased. Maybe that will change by October.

Trades like that won't happen with Sather. Ever.

Not to mention that for the Leafs, ignoring the salary cap because I don't know their contract situations, it's a lateral move where they get older at best.

The big difference in the time frame where people were throwing tantrums for the youth movement and now is the prior level of success the team was having along with the level of skill/speed the players people wanted replaced were at.

Now we are expecting kids to come in and replace players who were actually pretty damn good. I'm not sure they're going to be the considerable upgrade they would have been.

I hope at least two of them come in and play for keeps, but I'm not banking on it.

Martin St. Louis is 39 years old and, more importantly, the franchise goaltender that has made this team respectable over the last decade is 32 years old. The team just came off a final berth.

Why the **** should I be happy that multiple roster spots might be occupied by kids? How ridiculous.

I see stuff like this every offseason, and it winds up being false every offseason.

Oh yeah and Tanner Glass.

I'm not letting this one go until he is gone, so I apologize in advance how unbearable I might be regarding this turd on skates.
