Player Discussion JT Miller Thread

the body language talk is really a blaring clarion call to seriously evaluate this player before his contract kicks in. I am very torn with my evaluation of this guy.

On one hand, owner has made it clear that they are retooling, so there is no way to completely paper over the near point per game he provides during his new contract. I assume .85 points per game (~67-72) in the next 4 years before dropping off. When the team is trending up, he is the kinda guy that rallies the troops and extends a streak and keeps it going I believe. That is really F-ing valuable to a team.

On the other hand, the guy is only an asset on the condition that the team is doing well. When the going gets rough, he becomes exponentially worse until he loses control... its like having a berserker as an ally. I guess someone with a dad who goes into sporadic bouts of alcoholism will understand, dependable until something outside of his control messes him up. Then not only do you have to deal with the external problem, you have a new one in "your room" that you have to immediately deal with before he poisons the guys he is "leading". What a freakin dilemma.

Is that simply too much of a distraction to have over the course of 7 years? trading him for picks is a strategy for the long term health of the team, something this owner has proven to have no interest in pursuing, so is it really up to the 'Kessel whisperer' to tame his demons? Man.... never a dull day in canuckville, but seriously, the team has to figure this out by this draft day, no later.

Why has this board started to quote people from twitter who are irrelevant?
I think it helps foster discussion and they're not being used as a source or anything. @DFAC Could have just passed the tweet off as their own thought I guess.

Fan are going to drive Miller out of town and then wonder why we dont have a 2C....

I wonder if the NYR would do something around Miller for Trocheck and Kakko

The poster may be irrelevant but the point still stands.

Like @rypper said, I am merely passing on the thought for discussion

I am sorry, but don't use the stupid quote, pass it on as your own thought. Sure start a conversation, but quoting some no one just makes it seem like you are trying to pass this as some substantial thing.

Miller was one of the few trying hard this game.

Good grief, get off his back already. He's pissed at the effort and battle level. Give me that anyday rather than indifference
NOPE.

If I see my team lead acting like a bitch when the going gets tough then I really don’t respect him and am not motivated whatsoever by anything that comes out of his pie hole.

Being a leader is not about oneself. It’s about making everyone else better.

Cant believe this is still a debate...

Everyone should know by now how bad Miller is at controlling his emotions.

I mean Elias Pettersson basically came out and said it at the all star break interview with Friedman.

He is 'passionate.'

He's been a cry baby for a decade plus. He was a cry baby on NY when things don't go his way and same with Tampa.

It's no secret his emotions are directly related to his playing ability and attitude, been like that for a long time. I think people are realizing that now.

He doesn't like losing, rather have that then someone who seemingly puts up with playing on a mediocre team. People love to shit on Miller, if we had more guys that cared this much about losing maybe we aren't such a joke. I say that as someone who has called out Miller in the past too.

Tocchet is right though, his bad body language is a sign of immaturity, I can understand if hes 24, the guy is 30 and a leader. This is what we see, one day the players can tell you what goes on in the room...how the young guys interpret his volatility, do you want to deal with a volatile colleague every day?

JT is actually a negative asset when he's being whiny and petulant.

But, this team is trying to win now and with Tocchet they might actually be on the playoff side of a bubble team (I predict they get the 1st WC). Winning will take care of the problem at least for a little while. If we unintentionally tank again, it will be a disaster. If we get rid of him and have no 2C but are trying to win that will also be a disaster.

Roll the dice, IMO

There’s no evidence of him being a crybaby in Tampa…He was respected by his teammates and the coach.

What do you care..?…Six weeks ago, you publicly announced you were leaving this board to become a Red Wings fan.

So we can see where the bias comes from.

I prefer a leader who is competitive and can control his emotions without throwing a tantrum. Dont you?
If he was the Capitan, I'd take bigger issue with it. It's pretty clear he won't ever be that for those reasons.

But he is playing some of his best two way hockey under Tocchet. So I don't care as much what some inflammatory Twitter hack has to say about what he did off camera in a nothing garbage time game.

I was happy with the loss for tank reasons, but hated the effort level.

So we want more guys that gives up on back checking, and is careless with the puck all over the ice leading to turnovers? Doesn't sound like a winning formula to me.

But he smashed his sticks and yelled at his teammates so he obviously care, while those quiet Euros like Sedins, Petterson, Naslund, Ohlund clearly are content with losing, right?

Of course he was respectful and not whiny with Tampa. They have respected players around the league and a great leadership group with Hedman, Stamkos, Kucherov. You will be ostracized from the group if you display any antics.

The Canucks had Horvat , Pettersson and Hughes who seem like they are too scared of Miller. Either just roll their eye at him or just let him do his thing. That's the culture difference. Also he can do w.e he wants because no one else has that passion. That and he produces like crazy on the team. On Tampa he was a 6th wheel. Him on Tampa is the equivalent of Beauvillier on this team.

Tocchet has addressed this and he's right it starts to hurt your leadership when repeated. He wont let it become an issue.

If half this team had Miller's competitiveness we would be battling Vegas for the division. I dont know why the minute he does something Miller gets an army of hyper sensitive snowflakes taking aim at him but whatever it's your prerogative.

Wonder if the same people get upset about Boeser or Myers indifference and formerly Horvat's. I like his fire but im also not looking for him to be captain so having someone who is noticeably pissed off at players who dont put their A games on the table is ok with me.

We all want it and are sick of the way this team cant play fast hard and 60minutes but then we villainise the coaches managers and players who hold people accountable?

pettersson openly mocking miller on the bench tells you all you need to know about miller's "leadership"
said Pettersson. “I mean, we’ve had our differences, maybe in some games, but he’s a teammate that I respect. He’s someone I like to play hockey with.
“He wants to win so bad and sometimes he maybe gets too hotheaded, if that’s the right word. He cares a lot and just wants to win.”
