Player Discussion JT Miller Thread

If he genuinely believes what he is saying, that he has been defensively responsible... We might be in for a wild ride with this guy. He is keeping players accountable, like yelling at Delia and others. So that would actually lead me to believe he also thinks he is doing what he is supposed to and there is nothing to fix there...
What's crazy to me is that these guys have professional video coaches available to them. How have the Canucks not sat him down and been like "watch this 15min supercut of you blowing it defensively then hopping off the ice. Get your shit together, this is unacceptable."

For him to be walking around thinking he's even passable defensively is a failure of the organization.

I guess we'll never know who pushed for signing Miller to that ludicrous eight-year extension. The new contract hasn't even kicked in yet, and already you can see there's not a chance in the world that it will work out.

Can you imagine what this player will be like at the four year mark of his contract? Yikes! His teammates would probably be willing to pool their resources to buy him out, if that was legal under the collective bargaining agreement.

This disaster has Aquilini written all over it. He either approved of it or signed off on it. Or probably both.

Tragic that a team in our position would pay him this much for that long and he's that poor on defence. He's basically Phil Kessel. He's a top notch finishing piece not a player to mentor younger players and lean on. What a miscast move from management. What on earth are they going to do next? I'm kind of afraid to see what happens.

Interestingly, our POHO was instrumental in the Penguins acquiring Kessel (which to be fair worked out well).

Im willing to bet Miller gets over 90 points next season… anyone want in???

Not real money this isn’t a bet 365 popup

Rangers offered Lundqvist, 1 of Chytil/Kravtsov, and a 1st. Lundqvist was traded for a 1st, so that’s 2 firsts and Chytil or Kravtsov (I would have taken Chytil). Then we would have had enough cap space to trade for Marino (possibly for Rathbone who is imo better than the prospect that Pittsburgh got).

We would have been in a much better position if we did that. Chytil is a solid 3C, Marino is a solid defensive #2/3 rd and only 25 years old. Then we would have 3 firsts in the 2024 draft, and could use 1 of em to trade for another rhd like Connor Murphy.

🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

I'll admit to being in the boat that wanted to hold out for a better deal and would be kicking myself for it except for the fact that I had no influence on what happened.

Totally. He's on the wrong side of age. I'm of the opinion that he's already started his decline. I shudder to think what he's going to look like in just 2 more full seasons. By 33yrs old I am willing to wager he'll be a train wreck.

Zero goals, zero assists, zero hits, most of the time just straight up leaves and sits on the bench with half his gear off after the first period. Him and the GM tell the media that they think he's really settling into his new role as a goalie.

“When I had Sydney Crosby he was just like JT because I always thought he could be a goalie like JT wants to be. We just need to be patient with him and I think if we continue to develop him the right way he will be an excellent goalie in 2-3 years. These things take time, and I know we have a passionate fan base that demands results, but we need to faithfully follow our plan which has always been to sign JT to a mega deal and then convert him to a goalie.”

It's like sculpting. The goalie has always been there. We just have to help it emerge from the JT.

With the season he is having, if we didn’t re-sign him, he’d be a lot cheaper to re-sign today if you wanted to keep him… there’s no way he would’ve gotten that contract as a UFA with the season he is having in a tight cap environment. It’s crap like this that doesn’t install confidence in this new management, fans knew we shouldn’t have been desperate and re-signed him, yet they did it anyways.

Please someone humour me with a realistic scenario where this guy can be off this team before next summer….
Here is an idea of how the Canucks can unload him.

This would involve the Canucks trading Miller for a player that is also on a bad contract. For instance, a player who is getting paid 5 million a year, but based on merit should only be getting 2 million a year max. This could be a third or fourth-line forward or a 3rd pairing defense. Someone who does all the small things right and has a great attitude, but is underachieving in terms of points totals versus his contract.

In the short term, the Canucks would get a more mediocre player with far less offensive talent than Miller and a contract that the other team doesn't like. But a contract with less money and term than the daunting Miller contract.

This is far from the perfect scenario for the Canucks. This is more of a lesser of 2 evils, cut-your-losses type deal. But this might be the only realistic scenario in which the Canucks could unload Miller. If Canucks management could do better than this, all the better.

JTM is a beauty. Him and Bruce seem to be real tight, must have been a tough one.

This obsession with his stick smacks is bizarre though. Nobody seems to care when Bo goes ham on a door at the bench... and he does... often. Well okay, some clowns do bash Bo for stupid shit too.

No one cares when Hughes breaks twigs over the post after yet another PP goal against. Anyone notice EP after that Avs empty netter last night? Yea... I don't think Bauer is gonna honor the 12 month warranty on that one.. Is it just sensitive ears? Nobody likes to hear curses?

JT has clearly not been on his game this year. He looks full dad bod, skated in cement the first dozen games. Later had another dozen game stretch where he looked like he didn't GAF. Needs to up his compete.

He is also the teams defending MVP, has contributed to more W's than anyone since joining the team, and is the only player here who has had an elite season as a Canuck. (Hughes maybe the exception)

Can’t believe no one posted this yet.

Miller is such a man baby loser. Stop throwing tantrums and try backchecking for once.

Just get him off the team.

I mean... this shows he cant control him self.

But I dont mind his outburst in this situation.

If we want to be a bit generous, could interpret it as he wanted to win this game for Bruce.

Let's face it......unless Rutherford and Allvin can hit a grand-slam homer at the trade deadline (unlikely), deciding to sign Miller before extending Horvat will haunt this franchise for years.

And it's not just the diametric personalities of these two players. Horvat is three years younger; the team captain; and as honest a two-way player as you'll ever find....not to mention he's actually a natural center.

If the decision was hockey ops alone, then it should be a firing offense. But we all know Aquilini was all over it. Regardless of who made the call on Miller vs. Horvat, it's just a massive blooper.

Sure didn't look bothered by the Bruce chants if anything he looked dumbfounded, like maybe he was thinking "what have I got myself into here?" or How can I get out?
