this is another instance of us having to un-learn what the benning regime was doing, which was say what they actually believe to everybody

JR is pumping Millers tires to get value for him. Who cares what fans think. He’s trying to build a franchise. This is the opposite of Bennings approach. The man was a ghost for his final 3 seasons. I don’t even think he did end of season press conferences…

It would be one thing if they came out and pumped his tires. It’s weird to me that he decided to come out and say our 29 year old forward that we just signed to a massive contract is still learning to play defence and it might be a while before he does.

It’s a very bizarre thing to say about a long time veteran coming off a 99 point season that they just signed to a long term deal. This isn’t Daniel Cleary or Marty Reasoner reinventing themselves.

It's the opposite of tire pumping. It makes you wonder if they tried to trade him and got laughed at by teams demanding multiple firsts as compensation for his contract. This is fanbase damage control for a bad contract. They are screwed and now they will have to spin "improvement in the future" to the fanbase. Should buy a year or two from many. "Give him time to improve!"

I do find it weird how hockey people just decide to be ok with huge warts in players once they turn 26 but before that point, they get benched, traded, overlooked etc.

the whole purpose of rutherford is for him to answer questions, and he's never going to talk negatively about their own assets. he got asked about miller's terrible defensive play, and he put it into context with him constantly switching positions.

i'm sure that, internally, they're just as concerned as we are with his defensive play. but you're fielding a question from a reporter and it's not like he can say "well actually i think he's doing just fine" because you're not fooling anyone with that answer.

JT went from a really great trade asset to a “meh” value asset as soon as he signed the extension. I mean, he can still be traded but not for anything close to what we would have gotten at the last trade deadline.

We can criticize all we want and hindsight is 50/50, but if we took the trade package from NYR, we would probably be talking Horvat extension rather than selling him. Could have even flipped Lunky for a 1st to Dallas.

I guess that’s what I find odd about it. He could have left it there and said something more along the lines of, we know JT is a good player and it’s only a matter of time before he gets back into a rhythm and we see the player we’ve seen before. Instead the answer was he doesn’t know how to play defence and we’re hoping at 29 he can learn how to, maybe over the next year. If the goal was spin, I don’t think he did a very good job of it.

i don't see him saying he can't play defense. the overall message is that they're being patient with his issues so i don't really take into consideration the "over the next year" stuff within that context.

sure it's not perfect spin, and yours is better, but i don't read too much into their deflections because they're...deflections.

I've wanted him traded for ages and still want them to backstab trade him for anything they can get but Miller has the interesting habit of taking every second year off for most of his career.

It's a really silly thing to say about a 10+ year pro, who has played for your team for four years, coming off a 99-pt season that you just signed to a giant retirement contract ... regardless of how you spin it.

The JR/Allvin plan: Don't get good (but not amazing) value at the TDL; instead wait until Miller's value is sewered (because of their own extension) and hope you can just clear the contract.

Textbook management right there. What an improvement on Benning.
