Player Discussion JT Miller Thread

I cannot get over the sense (admittedly without concrete evidence) that Miller is a huge part of the toxicity and lack of cohesion on this team. The blown leads, the poor defensive structure, the fragility, the solid effort only 1 in every 5 periods… all aligns too perfectly with his floating, coughing it up, petulance BS that seems the opposite of good team play (ie Bo). Id love to see him sit a game — i bet the whole team plays better.

It would be one thing if they came out and pumped his tires. It’s weird to me that he decided to come out and say our 29 year old forward that we just signed to a massive contract is still learning to play defence and it might be a while before he does.

It’s a very bizarre thing to say about a long time veteran coming off a 99 point season that they just signed to a long term deal. This isn’t Daniel Cleary or Marty Reasoner reinventing themselves.

Tragic that a team in our position would pay him this much for that long and he's that poor on defence. He's basically Phil Kessel. He's a top notch finishing piece not a player to mentor younger players and lean on. What a miscast move from management. What on earth are they going to do next? I'm kind of afraid to see what happens.

I hope the fans start booing him
That would be sad IMO…really, this is an issue where management needs to be holding players accountable, more so than the fans. If they managed him appropriately he wouldn’t need to be boo’d…he’d spend a game in the press box and hopefully learn his lesson and move forward.

Amazing if true. Just amazing.

Canucks continue to master the art of "negotiating against yourself."

How would he know that Miller couldn't get the money anywhere else? A team not willing to give up significant assets for him isn't the same thing as teams not willing to pay for him if he hit the open market. After this year, doubtful he's worth his contract, but after last season? Most didn't think his contract was way out of line. Risky, sure, but out of line when compared to some of the other contracts out there? No, not really.

Watching Miller's 'no show' in tonight's game just reiterates the obvious. In the words of Brian Burke, what kind of drug-induced fantasy was the Canuck brain-trust in when they decided to sign this guy to eight year extension?

The inevitability is another crippling buy-out somewhere down the road and long before his contract expires. In fact buy-outs for OEL and Boeser aren't out of the question either.

It's not even a matter of debate......the Canucks have the worst payroll in hockey.

Nick Kyprios said on Twitter that Miller didn’t wanna sign here and this was the only place that gave him those crazy numbers.

You mean when Van was the only team that was legally allowed talk to him?

Yes teams never talk to players agents when they aren’t allowed. It’s proven when a player signs a multi year deal with different conditions at 12:03 eastern time on July 1. Crazy fast negotiating.

Yup, Kypreos isn’t very smart. Top UFAs almost always get overpaid, and Miller coming off a 99 point season + this season (likely higher stats since he’d still be chasing money as a UFA), along with some teams thinking he could play all situations and centre, and I think he’d get at least $8-9 million.

Yea its likely that 12 months before any team could signed Miller. Or even legally even talk to him, his agent had robust discourse will multiple teams.

Teams that don’t even know what the cap will be or the state of there own up coming ufas?

Thats a long bow…

The most likely thing is that he took a offer that made him very rich and took away the risk of waiting a year…

But there is zero prof of the thing that can be use to criticise the Canucks so thats the truth…

Maybe he could let us know where some of this seasons ufas will end up?

With his ego, I cannot imagine how much worse his attitude and effort will be if he's actually scratched for a game. Even if he is taken off PP1 for a game, the meltdown will be wild.

I can't stand this guy. His ego is incredibly toxic and I really don't care what anyone says about it. Miller is a big part of everything that is wrong with this team and in the room currently. His extension will go down as one of the worst this Franchise ever handed out if the team does not move him. This is only going to get worse and worse with each passing year.

I don't care about unwritten rules or whatever code there may be in place, move this guy out before his extension kicks in. He's an egotistical bum and I'm starting to believe a cancer in the room.

Rangers offered Lundqvist, 1 of Chytil/Kravtsov, and a 1st. Lundqvist was traded for a 1st, so that’s 2 firsts and Chytil or Kravtsov (I would have taken Chytil). Then we would have had enough cap space to trade for Marino (possibly for Rathbone who is imo better than the prospect that Pittsburgh got).

We would have been in a much better position if we did that. Chytil is a solid 3C, Marino is a solid defensive #2/3 rd and only 25 years old. Then we would have 3 firsts in the 2024 draft, and could use 1 of em to trade for another rhd like Connor Murphy.

🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

I dont believe he is this bad from here on out.

I also don't believe he is some incredibly toxic person in the locker room.

But...

If he genuinely believes what he is saying, that he has been defensively responsible... We might be in for a wild ride with this guy. He is keeping players accountable, like yelling at Delia and others. So that would actually lead me to believe he also thinks he is doing what he is supposed to and there is nothing to fix there...

We only do “hockey trades” here
