Player Discussion JT Miller Thread

Dude looks as if his 3rd kid was born a few months ago … frazzled and a shell

Some organization with a strong leadership culture might be able to straighten this guy out, but it’d take the Bruins or something.

You need someone like Bergeron or Crosby walking around smacking him in the back of the head every time he slacks off on the ice or has a hissy fit.

The fact management positioned this player among the core leader group on this team highly concerns me.

Here's a Ben Kuzma article with some quotes from Miller and Rutherford.

“The last couple of weeks, I’ve been playing really well at centre and it’s a compliment to me not cheating and playing the right way. I’ve been on for a lot of goals (against) and in a lot of hard matchups. But it’s a little tricky when you’re bouncing around on every line.

“But I like the strides I’m making on a 200-foot basis. I have a goal to win and I don’t care if I have 35 points this year or 99. Right now, we’re just making it too easy on our opponents.”

For reference, the last two weeks (7 games worth) he's been on for 5 goals goals for and 7 goals against in all scenarios. At even strength he was on for 1 goal for and 4 goals against.

Rutherford was preaching patience with Miller, especially when asked to play the demanding centre position.

“It’s a work in progress,” Rutherford stressed. “Every time anybody tries to do anything, we want it done yesterday. But there’s a process. I’m not complaining about this, but there have been lot of line changes with J.T. at centre and then wing.

“Just recently, before he got moved back to the wing, he centred a line and played against top lines and didn’t get scored on for three games.

“He was very conscious and, sure, there are mistakes that are fixable. And he’s willing to do it. Sid (Sidney Crosby) has always been one of the great all-around players, but prior to winning back-to-back Cups (2016-17), his 200-foot game became responsible.

“What players have a hard time understanding is they’ll get as many or more chances playing that way than by cheating. Once they understand it, the game becomes easier and they win more games.

“But it’s hard to make that adjustment. It takes time and it could take a whole year.”

So wait, wait this is next level great. Jim Rutherford now is preaching patience on a player he just gifted a gigantic contract based on his performance last year. They signed Miller under the assumption he could play centre. Rutherford’s full of shit.

That entire Kuzma article is an insult to fans’ intelligence.

Miller's 30 as well, it sounds like he's describing a 20-year-old prospect that is struggling at the NHL level.

The most charitible way to look at what Rutherford said is that Miller should be able to develop into a two-way player, there's no reason he can't, and it will take the proper organizational structure to do it. It's a hell of a stretch, though.

Starts with Miller. Seravalli is saying that Miller has gained a reputation of being a prick with the fans. It's not a reference to what they think of him in the room.

Well that's a massive distinction, sadly I bet some of the fans and even media might've already run with the juicier headline.

Kesler developed a rep for being a prick too, but I'd still take prime Kesler on my team anyday.

A lot of the edited quotes being posted on twitter are missing a few key sentences in order to really stroke the flames. It's dumb because there's so much that's already being said that is bad enough.

Some perspective:

I mean, yes, obviously he's trying to put a positive spin on things, but there's supposed to be some nuance to the art.

As for Miller: I know people get all upset at hockey players for speaking in empty cliches, but like, dude, know when to roll out the tired cliches.

It's very similar to draft day where every rookie gets compared to superstars and hall of famers because "will probably end up like Daymond Langkow" isn't a comparison most people understand. Drives me crazy.

Yes, and that is also dumb and tends to do those prospects a disservice.

I feel like he's just trolling with those comments but at the same time his behavior is never going to change so it's like he just doesn't care? No idea lol

jr is just doing damage control. he can't come out and say jt miller sucks and it was a mistake to sign him and he can't stay silent in the face of the media attention so he does the next best thing and acts like this was all part of the plan

what's discussed internally is not necessarily the same as what's discussed when addressing the media. it's all public relations

There is and there should be.

I think the biggest issue is people will always take what they want to hear out of these things. Look no farther than the out of context quotes people have already been running with. They are the parts of the quotes that fits their argument. There is clearly more that was being said.
