I hate the « we have to send him down to help Laval ». Stop playing with the guys, you’re good enough to be in our top 9, you play in the NHL. Send Ylonen or Pezz down for f***’s sake.

MERITOCRACY. Players have to respect that nothing is given and everything has to be earned. He earned to stay. Who gives a rat’s ass about Laval. They won’t make the playoffs.

Roy > Ylonen

But we knew that all along. I still think Ylonen is coming along. I think with ice time, we may see a player emerge. I hope we move Pearson so Ylonen and RHP get decent ice time.

I agree, mostly with the 2nd part of your message (which may mean you shouldn't have opposed them in the first part of your message). Ylonen and Roy are two completely different players. Ylonen is a weird player because he flashes a lot of skill along with great skating, but he never did it consistently, even back in juniors. His offensive numbers will most likely never be there regularly. At least not to the extent of the skill he flashes

Roy on the other hand just understands offense and gets a lot done with the skills he has, which are sometimes less than the sum of his parts.

Roy should be on a top 6 or a luxury on a 3rd line. Ylonen probably ends up as a 3rd liner with speed that can chip in offensively at times and play a responsible defensive game.

Haven't been impressed lately with his play, but boy that was a nice goal he got last night!!
Let's hope he can get on a roll. Not much in the way of expectation the next 20 games, so let's hope he can take advantage of it...........................because there will be a ton of pressure on him next year to make the team out of camp.

I was responding to a post that compared them and said because Roy is better, Ylonen should be waived. So I was basically saying, ok sure Roy is better. But there are 12 spots in the lineup. Just because Roy is better doesn't mean we have to get rid of Ylonen. Like, we have a ton of vets that are not part of the future that we can trade or even waive first...
As for Ylonen, he also needs to grow his puck management game to be a reliable bottom sixer. While I think it's possible he can do, he needs the reps learn and prove he can do it.

Roy’s hand skills are unquestioned. The issue is and will remain his pace. Whether he has enough skating ability to create the time and space to be able to use those elite hand skills.

That's his game though. A silent guy who takes advantage of time and space. He mostly plays well defensively too, so it makes it okay that he is not super impactful at all times. I have found him to be smart in small offensive situations even though it doesn't always work. I wouldn't expect more from a rookie, but I expect him to become quite a good offensive player in the coming years. Not a Kucherov of course, but similar in the way that he will be seen like a worse player than his linemates for a long time while getting more points than them every year.

He completely reminds me of when Suzuki broke in with the team. Same criticism of him back then and similar skill set. The kids making a case to management that he’s the answer on the 2nd line next to Dach and Newhook.

Almost exactly the same.

Give Roy some time to train and practice and work with NHL coaches/players and we'll see how he develops.

The skill and ability are not questioned.

Love scorers.

Not sure the comparison are fair with Suzuki who has a very rare ability to turn it on in big moments…

Probably way easier to add muscle and xp to a talented player than getting a good experienced athlete to suddenly start scoring on the regular in the nhl, pretty stoked about Roy so far.

Starting to have a few good shooters!

His lack of pace has not stuck out in a negative way. At all. People need to start accepting that we have ourselves a steal.

What’s the ceiling? Not sure, but he’s a future top 6 winger, of that I have little doubt.

Roy will be a good opportunity to evaluate the coaching staff. In the past a prospect like Roy would have done well in his first season then would have regressed every year and would have ended up in Europe. Let's see how MSL does.

Management are aware of what he is.
I knew he'd arrived when Marty said "WE are going to work with him"
The good news is we have two relatively raw rookies holding their own on our two top lines.

This is why I keep insisting our next move is a complete revamp of our bottom 6. We aren't nearly good enough.
Having a couple of lines who can consistently play in the opposition's end will only make our talented players that much better.

We will still need a homerun player for our top 6 but fixing the evident weaknesses on 3 and 4 will go a very long way into making us competitive.
If we start winning games and maintain the upbeat day to day atmosphere surrounding the team it will be that much easier to attract that special piece.

The challenge now is going to be blowing open those holes and filling them properly.

If last nights goal was any indication , he’ll be fine. With skating coaches and strength training he’ll speed up a bit. IQ will always make up for a slight lack of pace. He is always around the play. He thinks steps ahead

To revamp the bottom 6 we need to wait for a few players to be out. Anderson, Gallagher, Armia and Dvorak. I understand KH in his will to not pay to get them out. It makes sense and i would do the same. Armia and Dvorak will be out after next season. AT one point we will have to buy out Gallagher but better wait for it to not be too punishing. We don't want to be stuck in the same position as the Wild with 14 millions of cap hit in buyout for this season and next.

"No matter what happens with me, no matter if they send me back to Laval or keep me here, I’m going to hold my head high, and they’re going to make the best decision for me.

“For sure, if I can get some experience playing in the playoffs for Laval, it would be good for me, so both options are excellent. I just need to keep improving, and whether it’s in the AHL or the NHL, I’m going to keep working hard to do that.”

Suzuki is still improving this year at 24. Roy is only 20. He needs time to bloom. Also Suzuki is faster than he was in his first year with the Habs. He now has real burst when needed. Look at Slaf, first 20 games he was like last year, and suddenly improved, while still being very raw.

Scary to think how good this kid will be in a few years.

I don't think there's much doubt he'll eventually be a very good top 6 player, the question is really how good.

Prime Alex Tanguay, with perhaps more PK impact, seems like a not unreasonable comparison...

Hes stolen the puck 3 times yesterday, despite his "lack of pace". One of them leading directly to a goal.

Really because I'd start with Dvorak Evans Pezetta and Ylonen. We know Gallagher and Anderson will be challenging. Armia is fine for now.
I think it's come to the point where these guys are dragging us down to the extent that blowing them off may be worth more than anything we can get back.
If we get a shot at a player who can fill a role and fits our criteria we can't wait. Our rebuild is highly dependent on our Pro Scouting for the next little bit.
I know everyone else is aiming high but my bet now is to make us competitive asap by fixing our broken bottom. Once we are on the winning side of the ledger we can look for that homerun.

But he definitely has been caught flat footed a couple of times, even last night
But completely normal and expected of a 20 yr old rookie
I'm sure he's aware he has to get a little more quick off the jump
But when he 'glides' he knows what he's doing as well as his anticipation is off the charts, he zones in on people even without moving his feet

Imagine getting a 1st round pick for free because you drafted him 1 year earlier in the 5th round lol, if he was born 1 month later he's a 2022 draft pick lol

Pace is not as important if you get a head start on your opponents with great anticipation. À la Toffoli. Roy displays this brilliantly.
