Prospect Info: Joshua Roy Part 2

Roy has improved previous weaknesses, his shot, his passing, so that they are strengths. He is working on his skating. I’m not penciling him in on a top line next year but I wouldn’t bet against him longer term. He’s shown he can get better.

Totally. That's the most important thing.

I see him as finishing out this year and playing for TCJ and then one year in the AHL, and then he might be ready for a secondary NHL scorer role, or close.

From everything i have seen of Joshua Roy, including his play in the WJHC, i am not convinced his game will translate to a top-6 role in the NHL. His lack of speed and drive concern me. He generally floats and relies solely on his teammates to create plays and open up ice for him.

I am curious what others think. I see him having a long way to go to improve his game in all facets (other than his shot). He is a smart player though and goes to the quiet areas where a teammate can find him, ala Tyler Toffoli.

Hopefully he works on driving play this season and on his speed/strength.
I think Toffoli is a good comp for Roy.

Sure but it's hard to do when you are producing at 2PPG or above. Means your competition is not good enough.

See above. When you producing at a pace that is above 2PPG, it's a matter of the competition not being good enough for you.
In those cases, the better competition from the better league would be more beneficial to a young player.
Sure, if you consider only offensive production. But when you have lots of other things to work on, like defensive play, skating, physicality, etc., junior is the only place where you’re still guaranteed ice time and opportunity while working on those things.

As soon as you go to the AHL, you’re competing with men with pro experience for ice and if you aren’t reliable in one of those areas, you lose ice and don’t play in key situations. So it’s way more complicated than saying he’s scoring too much and needs to play against better players.

The hockey world is littered with guys whose progression stopped because they lost opportunity while still in a developmental phase.

I was telling people to calm down here las season when some were saying that Roy's production would drop without Anctil and Parent. I said Ethan Gauthier (Q 1st overall in 2021) would make a big jump and that Justin Gill would also improve. We see that now. As for Roy, he still need to be more dynamic on the ice. His skating is still his main weakness. I hope he will work with a skating coach throughout this season with specific training to improve on that. I hope the new "geniuses" at the top of the hockey ops now have figured that out.

Interesting to see how last year when he was basically 2PPG he was the crown jewel of prospects and was the second-coming to many. Now the initial shine has worn off and he’s flirting on bust status.

The kid seriously needs to work on his skating and pace. If he could skate like Farrell I think he’d be a potential star

How is he flirting as a bust? He’s a 5th round pick who led the Q in scoring and had a productive WJC in his D+1. He’s not a finished product, clearly, but he has plenty of time to develop.

The NHL is all about pace and if Josh Roy is to become a top 6 forward he has to vastly improve his ability to play at a much higher pace.

As in skating? Reacting to the play? I'm not sure what you mean. There's plenty of guys in the NHL who don't play at a high pace. Look at Toffoli.

Totally agree
With decent size and with him putting up those kind of points, he'll get his shot for sure. Clearly he's got talent and the desire to improve.

Skating primarily but I would argue he is not at Tofolli's level pace or skating wise.

Nothing stops an AHL coach from still playing a top prospect over a veteran ahl player even if the veteran AHL player is the better player. The focus at the AHL should be on development, you don't get a bunch of AHL vets to compete with your prospects you get AHL vets to complement the development of your prospects. Have a playmaking center prospect who still has a lot to learn get him an veteran AHL goalscorer to play on his wing and not a veteran playmaking center that is competing against the prospect.

Seeing too many similarities with Sasha Khovanov for my liking.
Yeah, loved Khovanov in his D year but no, not even close. Roy is twenty times the player he was.

The NHL is all about talent and finding a way to implicate yourself with said talent. Toffoli, Kaliyev, Robertson, etc. Weve seen this before. Roy has a good build, he will add up strength, get more explosive.

He is essentially a D+1 prospect right now. He is 230 days older than Slafkosvky.

I'll be attending the game Friday vs. Saint-John. I'll have to entertain clients, but I'll try to have a litte report on his game for y'all once I get a minute. I'm very busy the whole weekend so it might be on Monday. But it should be a fun game.
You're the mascot???
