It was Stephane Waite who claimed that and I took it as BS back then because he sounded like a pissed off fired employee ranting about his ex-employer and Joel Bouchard talked about coaching KK and it was nothing like Waiter claimed it was.

It's not the only thing Waite said too, but everything else is ignored by fans or was debunked by other news afterward.

To claim that Waite's comments were debunked is a highly subjective conclusion. Bouchard had many reasons to not throw gasoline on the fire. Waite's claims were very much in line with Bergevin and Julien's comments about KK having to want to change in order to change. It also doesn't help KK's case that his development has entirely stagnated and he is still making the same mistakes while seemingly making little to no adjustments to his game.

I think the kid still has a future and when he matures a little he could become a very good player.

I think some players, maybe Roy is one of them, get called lazy unfairly. I remember seeing a Jets vs. LA game back in the day live in Winnipeg. I remember thinking Gretzky just looked like he was floating the whole time and then suddenly he had the puck in exactly the right spot to either make a great pass or take a dangerous shot. Ron Duguay was also on the team. Hair flying and always running around like his life depended on it, he never touched the puck and didn't contribute much at all.
Not many of these guys are actually "lazy". There's more to it than looking like you're putting out 110% all the time. Some guys just don't look like that when they play. Mario looked like that to me too.
It’s like watching Tiger Woods swing, some athletes are just uber efficient. Smarts, dedication and skill I’d say.. It’s easy to look like you’re working hard at hockey. Heck with my god awful strides I looked like I was going for the Cup in OT trying to go back to the bench in Friday 11 pm garage leagues after a back check.

when you go to the 11:14 mark, i've seen him do this a number of times, where he has a player with the puck right near him and he does nothing. Yet other times he'll make a nice play to steal the puck off the player on the back check. To me it seems like every now and then he'll just get a little lazy on the defense. Granted this time he was at the end of the shift but this is a WJC gold medal game so not a normal Q game where i've seen him do this more often.

I've noticed the same thing in the past with Caufield where at times he would just give almost no effort in his own end while in the NCAA. Part of it could just be players like these two that are just so highly skilled offensively that while 18, 19, they are much more concerned with the offense, which makes sense.

But I'm just happy to have high skilled young players in the organization like Caufield and Roy.

I'd say I was quite wrong about KK's talent and ability, but the MB run Habs had a history of luckily having local journalists run hit pieces on unfavourable players/ex-players at convenient times.
This goes back before MB. Habs front office has a multi decade history of stuff coming out when they don't / didn't want the player here anymore.

The way he reads the play actually reminds me a bit of suzuki actually. He literally never panics with the puck. If he can get to Suzuki’s skating level then we have a fantastic player here.

KK was resistant to advice and coaching, reportedly had his father in his ear. He was given too much too early and became entitled much like Galchenyuk did......who also had a meddling father who was a former coach. There was alot of cryptic messaging concerning his attitude from management around the last time KK was sent to Laval and in his final season when another move to Laval was rumoured to be looming. Most of it was phrased as "KK is going to have to want to change" inferring a stubborn resolve that was reportedly emboldened by his father.

Who knows exactly what the extent of the issues were but where there is smoke there is fire. How much of that was due to his attitude, management or outside influences or a combination of each is a mystery but there does seem to be a lesson to be learned about handing mentally immature kids jobs that they are not equipped to deal with.

The same will apply to Slafkovsky, if he is an eager student and is able to cope with the ups and downs of a young player in the NHL then he probably remains with the team. If he shows any signs of an attitude then send him to Laval and make him earn his spot. Both KK and Galchenyuk felt like instant stars when they joined the team due to the rabid fan base heaping adoration on them, they felt like a young Commodus with the mob behind them and didn't need to listen to the Senate (management). I am confident in MSL and HuGo's ability to manage expectations and communicate with their young players in a much healthier manner than Therrien/Julien/Bergevin did. This should help to minimize the risk of alienating young players who are going through the peaks and valleys of a typical developmental journey.
Thanks so much for that, excellent and comprehensive @Estimated_Prophet very much appreciated 👍

As a (fellow?) philosopher and eternal student of history I really enjoyed that skillful Commodus analogy/reference/anecdote

I salute you.

What I like here is that he went from 5th round wtf choice to a legit 1st rounder in 1 year by changing context and working hard. Now wins the gold at junior as a pretty effective player. What does that say about hard work? It means that it's worth it! He'll want to do even better and he has another full Q season to work on skating, conditionning/strength and consistency.

The kid has offensive timing and positionning way up there. He'll be so dangerous near the net on rebounds. Even defensively he seems to do well.

I'm not expecting 120 points this season, he'll round up his game and get ready for a pro role which may not be top 6 at the start. He'll have to bring offense while being responsible and prepared to play with men. He should do a good 2 years in the AHL I think but this is a gem to polish which has all the indications of a solid 2nd liner at maturity.

I wish him health and hopes he really gets it. Skills are necessary but work, makes you good.

Someone else said the Toffoli comparison and the more time that passes, the more it fits. I think this is the type of winger we got. OK skating but high IQ and a player with a solid shot/skill.

The other day, Louis Robitaille (coach of Gatineau in the Q and was an Assistant Coach at the WJC), mentioned on French radio that Mason MacTavish asked to play on a line with Roy, which is why we got them on a line together.
Unfortunately it didn't last long because he couldn't keep up. If Roy can improve his skating, he could be a solid top 6 producer in a couple of years

They played on the same line in 4 of the 7 games.

The first two games where Roy was on the top line with MacTavish and Bedard. Then they played 3 games where Roy and Mason were not together.

And then in the semi-final and final, they were on the line together with Dufour.

So it could be two things: Mason wanted to play with Roy when the tournament started. And when they played a few games apart, Mason probably asked to play with Roy again.
