It’s because he doesn’t skate fast and people can’t differentiate the two attributes.

People are also acting as if turning to a Toffoli would be a disappointment.

Yeah, his skating isn’t great. He still has many years to work on that before it’s an issue, the rest of the tools are ALL there.
I think as he matures, gets stronger that his skating will also improve.

how can you do that before we decide monty vs allen......
Then we can move to winner, roy and a 2nd.....lol
I figured Monty might be with us longer than Allen, so that allows for a whole lot more fake trades lol.

23 minutes of icetime for Roy yesterday. First on the team and a winger. I guess he is not that bad without the puck and can play well defensively.
Only a small and unimportant minority think of Josh Roy as a bad player. Still not sure why we are concentrating on those people. A good player with things to work. That will need development to get there. I do think that you'd maximize his performance by playing him away from McT. And maximixing a performance does NOT mean taking a AWFUL player to a GREAT one.

Not sure why so many disclaimers needs to be isssued for this particular player..lol

Good IQ hockey goal. He tape for a pass. Roy show his top 6 potential in that tournanement.

Sometimes Roy looks like « lazy » guy, but this guy certainly know how to play around the opposite net. I said « lazy », but sometimes it difficult to separate lazyness with the guy whose want to slow down the pace of the game. I appreciate those kind of guy, cause they have already the skills that you can’t teach.

No sugarcoating it, like Suzuki and others before him, Roy isnt the most intense guy. The good thing is that intensity is just one way to have success in this league.

Roy is very passive on the forecheck. It’s not necessarily because he’s lazy. It might be by design. His back check is more aggressive so there’s a decision made to be passive on his forecheck. Whatever the case may be, his fully upright skating stance makes his forecheck look anemic.

I don't think anyone will really question the offensive upside too much, clearly the shot is legit, his playmaking is high end, his overall offensive IQ is high end. If he can get stronger, especially in the lower body then he's going to be one hell of an interesting prospect to follow over the next few years.

I think some players, maybe Roy is one of them, get called lazy unfairly. I remember seeing a Jets vs. LA game back in the day live in Winnipeg. I remember thinking Gretzky just looked like he was floating the whole time and then suddenly he had the puck in exactly the right spot to either make a great pass or take a dangerous shot. Ron Duguay was also on the team. Hair flying and always running around like his life depended on it, he never touched the puck and didn't contribute much at all.
Not many of these guys are actually "lazy". There's more to it than looking like you're putting out 110% all the time. Some guys just don't look like that when they play. Mario looked like that to me too.

Kovalev also, a lot of dim people said that he only showed up one game in ten.

People who like to compare Roy to Toffoli and Ryder, none of those played as close to the net than Roy, he has an amazing shot, but he's also ready to pay the price around the net.

So far he reminds me most of Daniel Carr in that respect you mention.

Let's hope his game translates better to the NHL than Carr's did!

Yeah the skating is ugly. But the rest is really good. He’s too upright so the acceleration is really poor. Hopefully he can work on it somewhat. He can hopefully become like Toffoli.

The upright upper body position isn't necessarily a problem as many great skaters have excelled with an upright stance. Eichel is a really obvious example as is McDavid to a slightly lesser extent. It isn't a natural feel for most but it is actually better for hockey players as even weight distribution and a quiet upper body are two resulting benefits allowing the player to shift weight to their edges and control the puck while doing so. Slafkovsky is also very upright and this plays a huge role in his ability to handle the puck and employ alot of deception with his feet and hands. Slaf also needs to gain more extension in order to better build speed but his size helps to counter what he lacks in speed. The problem is in Roy's extensions and lack of knee bend. He needs to drive with his butt more as opposed to strictly pushing with his legs. Getting into more of a squat will also improve his stability and ability to protect the puck.

I like the Toffoli comparison as it is also what I was thinking as his hands and vision are outstanding. If his skating doesn't improve much he will need to add muscle and really work on his defensive game in order to be a Toffoli 2.0 but it is not hard to envision.

Not true at all as both Ryder and Toffoli went to the net especially in junior. Roy was very much a perimeter player in the Q but has taken on a slightly different role at the WJC. He is hardly a force in front of the net so I don't know why we are even discussing it.

You shouldn't treat these comparison's as absolutes as they are only matching players who share similarities more than others.
