Not the shooting mechanics of a guy suffering from a lingering shoulder issue. No clue what's going on with this kid but I'm having a hard time believing he's looking anywhere close to opening the season on LTIR.
That's because there's nothing wrong with him. They're just being overly cautious. Maybe he's not feeling 100% comfortable. They want him feeling 100%, not 99%. Especially for pre-season.

People in this thread are freaking out over nothing.

How do you reconcile saying "there's nothing wrong with him" with DJ literally saying he had a minor setback(twice in training camp counting PD saying he tweaked it two weeks ago))and keeping him out of preseason altogether? All this with a player that obviously has chronic shoulder issues including two surgeries and has not seen regular season play in close to 10 months.

Like, what kind of mental gymnastics are you doing to make this shit make sense in your brain?

Probably issues due to muscle atrophy and some imbalance. Mentally will take a while to get used to it.
It sounds like everything is structurally fine(cleared for contact), but Norris' subjective experience is telling him something different. It may just be a mental hurdle.

With that being said, he may blow out his shoulder again when taking an innocent faceoff.

Same could have happened to Pinto last season after he blew out his shoulder taking a faceoff the previous season. Yet, he played 82 games, no problem.

I'm still nervous but the mental side for Norris being the issue atm could make sense. Anyone that's suffered major injuries requiring surgery knows how hard it can be to have confidence in that area again, and this is the highest level of hockey, not some beer league.

I got to believe that if the medical staff thought he was at risk for re-injuring the shoulder, or that the surgery failed, he wouldn't be out of the no-contact jersey.

It's kinks.

Like was reported, a tweak or nick isn't surprising, If it was anything more, he'd be off the ice.

He's coming off a long term, serious injury to an area he is already weak in. If they/he feel he's better off easing in with practice until he's absolutely ready, that's perfect.

It sucks he's not ready to go during training camp, but him being held out while still participation in practice tells us that it isn't an issue likely to keep him out longterm. If it was, they would be holding him out of any activity and would have sent him to his specialist already.

I would agree. Yesterday was concerning because that was the distinction with him not on the ice and everyone dreading what that could mean, but if he's back out there in the non contact jersey, he's obviously well enough to keep moving forward.

I totally agree. It probably is fine.

When I recovered from a knee injury, my doctor said everything was good to go, but I felt as though it was unstable. It took some time for that feeling to go away.

Put yourself in Norris’ position. You’ve had multiple shoulder issues. You came back and re-injured it twice. You are now training and in camp, any little tweak to the area which would be nothing to a guy without a history of shoulder issues, sends your mind racing and you think this is not normal.

I broke my leg playing hockey with 7 pins and 2 plates. It was a good 2 full years before I felt confident in it again. I can't imagine what it must be like for pro athletes.

So... should I panic more or less?

Apparently it's all in his head

He must be really anxious about taking faceoffs.

I was basically unable to walk straight and in near constant pain for a year and a half due to two herniated discs and now that I'm mostly pain free I am terrified of going back to the gym and riding my bike....

Nailed it.

That's where DJ is coming from with his comments from today.

Personally my expectation is he's gonna have a similar season to the one batherson had last year recuperating. Building that muscle group up again so it feels less distracting is gonna prob take a year.
Anything above that time frame is gravy imo

Certainly seems that all concerned are being overly cautious. Nothing wrong with that in preseason.

It would be highly irresponsible for doctors' to approve a player for contact, when there is structural damage in the shoulder. It is quite simple.

They could be wrong, no doubt, but I am not arguing that.

team won’t come out and say playoffs are the expectations, which ones did the organization mention.
Hmm I guess I kind of inferred it.

Last year the expectation was "meaningful games" towards the end of the season. Progress this year, to me, can only mean making the playoffs.

I don't think it really matters what they say, but it does provide soundbites that get used against them, so I get why they're guarded about it. I still prefer confidence, but it makes some sense.

Everyone already knows it's playoffs or a big disappointment and a head or two will roll, so it doesn't really need to be said by them specifically.

You said the expectations set out by the organization, then goal post moved them, to your subliminal opinion.
